AIBU to think this is inappropriate?

Hi,
DD1 (9) came in to me today and told me she wanted to start dancing, and doing competitive dance. I decided to youtube exactly what competitive dance was, as I'd never really heard of dance competitions before, and these were the first 3 videos that came up.

To me, they seem extremely inappropriate, but AIBU? I read through some of the comments, and no one else really seems to think it's wrong, so is it just me being a bit old fashioned? This is the first time she's ever shown interest in a sport, so I don't want to stop her, but at the same time, it seems so wrong to me that people could let their kids dance like that..

No it's not Abby Lee- it's worse than that!

The single ladies dance caused furore on dance.net

Don't let me wrong I love single ladies inspired choreography which after all is Fosse inspired but I wouldn't do it in those costumes with. 7 year olds the same as I wouldn't do a Chicago chair dance with 7 year olds.

dd1 is 5 and was recently in a ballet show (her bit was fine), where some of the older dc (11-14) performed dances which made dh turn to me and say "I don't think I should watch this, I might get arrested!" It was completely inappropriate for the show and their age. Sorry nothing helpful to say other than YANBU

Shock

There's no way I'd allow my daughter to do that!

What are they wearing! There's no need to be dressed like that either

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 09/08/2013 11:47

Well MumTo2 I'm reporting it as very suspect indeed. I hope others follow suit.

MissMuesli · 09/08/2013 11:51

I think the girls are very talented and it wouldn't be quite as bad if the outfits weren't so "sexy", but the outfits and the dance moves together are abit inappropriate IMO, so I don't think YABU

I suggest you shop around in your area at different classes - they should let you come and watch and then both you and your DD can choose a style that suits you both.

I refused to let my DD join one class we saw as the type of dancing was a bit provocative but it was still nowhere as bad as the ones of the videos. The one they go to is pretty old fashioned but as my girls are younger is more appropriate.

MumTo2x · 09/08/2013 12:11

Whathaveiforgottentoday, I posted about this on the previous page, me and DH had planned to do that but we will be moving to Arizona, so have decided to wait until then. Once we're all sorted over there, we do plan on going to observe some classes and see what we like best. I agree that old fashioned is probably better.

Um? Why is it suspicious?

celticclan · 09/08/2013 15:28

Inappropriate is an understatement. Why do people want this for their children?

digerd · 09/08/2013 16:30

The 10 year-old is indeed highly trained and skilled. I recognise with all of them advanced ballet/jazz moves and must assume they have been training for some years to have such flexibility and control.
I do think if they were costumed differently with more coverage it would be more tasteful for their age.
But must add that I did not get a poledance sexy presentation from the girls- they were just performing their skills and at an exceptionally high standard too.
