To not get the correlation between heavy tattooing and 1940's and 50's fashion

How do those two go together?! How?!

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 04/08/2013 17:48

I didn't realise there was one. Is there?

gaggiagirl · 04/08/2013 17:53

I see what you mean OP I think the people who choose that style look bloody fabulous, I am a wee bit jel I think they look like movie stars.
I don't understand the correlation either but I admire it.

500internalerror · 04/08/2013 17:53

Because that was the style of most Sailor Jerry type old school tattoos; that was the era. So the tattoos have been translated into an actual style for women, hence the two go together.

cushtie335 · 04/08/2013 17:55

There was a girl like this in Aldi today. Her hair and make up were amazing, big black beehive and eyeliner, prom dress and kitten heels but with huge tats up both arms. She looked stunning although I'm of the opinion that the tats kind of spoiled it. I'm old though.

CuppaSarah · 04/08/2013 17:56

It's that rockabilly style isn't it? I suppose the pin up glam look is a bit more femminine and flattering than alot of other alt styles. So it's only natural you get some heavily peirced and tattoed girls going for it.

thornrose · 04/08/2013 17:56

There's a woman in my street that has this look, she looks amazing. It looks really high maintenance though, she doesn't ever do "casual".

HellonHeels · 04/08/2013 17:56

Oooo I like that look. Didn't realise it was a 40s thing but now it's been pointed out I can see it.

Not normally a fan of ink (each to their own though) but I do like those ones.

bittenipples · 04/08/2013 17:57

Know what you mean, so yanbu. But, it looks good imho.

Souredstoneshasasouredpebble · 04/08/2013 18:00

Oh I'm not saying it doesn't look good! It looks bloody amazing on a lot of women. I just didn't understand how the two worked together.

TheSmallClanger · 04/08/2013 18:05

It's "Pin Up" style, a modern take on the rockabilly look. Inspired by the 50s, but with lots of tatts, piercings and bits of goth and metal style thrown in. It is associated with the modern swing dance scene, burlesque and rock/punk/metal clubbing.

StuntGirl · 04/08/2013 18:08

What 500 said.

I am always jealous of any person who can do a high maintenence look. I just cannot be arsed.

themaltesefalcon · 04/08/2013 19:56

Does anyone have a link? I love 50s clothes but am none too fussed on tattoos, usually, but this sounds intriguing.

Oldraver · 04/08/2013 20:03

I love the look though its not really for me. Looks fabulous on others

ElphabaTheGreen · 04/08/2013 21:21

YANBU. I know exactly the look you mean - like Sarah Kramer, the cookbook author pictured here. I love the 50s look but loathe tattoos, so I hate the combination. I can kind of see the appeal but all I can think is, 'She would look bloody amazing if it wasn't for those DAMNED HIDEOUS SLEEVES!'

chirpchirp · 04/08/2013 21:45

I probably fall into this category. I love 40's/50's hair and make up and the fashion, for me it's the perfect way to do alternative and feminine.

I love cherry dollface's YouTube channel for hair and make up tutorials.

LeGavrOrf · 04/08/2013 21:48

I don't personally get it either, but then again it's probably not my fashion to get, it's probably a young persons thing.

I think it looks great though, tbh. Some of those girls with beehives and arms full of tattoos look rather marvellous. And I don't like tattoos at all really.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 04/08/2013 21:50

I love it! A woman who lives by me rocks this look, she really goes for it and she looks amazing.
I wish I could be arsed, and had the confidence to pull it off.

Patchouli · 04/08/2013 22:03

Do you mean like Amy Winehouse?

LimitedEditionLady · 04/08/2013 22:05

I love it,i wish i had the confidence to look like that but alas i dont like drawing attention to myself!

Ziggyzoom · 04/08/2013 22:07

I was going to mention Amy Winehouse...

poorbuthappy · 04/08/2013 22:09

Its more than Amy Winehouse though...

StuntGirl · 04/08/2013 22:10

Better put together than Amy Winehouse Grin

More like this, this and this.

waterlego6064 · 04/08/2013 22:14

YANBU OP, I didn't get the connection either so am grateful for the explanations.

I absolutely LOVE this look, and I say that as someone who isn't generally interested in fashion and style.

If I were to attempt any sort of 'look', it would be this one but it would never work on me because:

I am inherently lazy
I can't style my own hair
I am rubbish at applying make-up
I can't wear red lipstick
I am too pathetic to get sleeve tattoos
I have a boyish physique and the women I see rocking this look tend to have fabulous hourglass figures.

Maybe in another life.

StuntGirl · 04/08/2013 22:16

It's a look favoured by a lot of, shall we say, plumper ladies, but the corsets and styling of the clothing definitely help add and accentuate a feminine figure. Don't let your perceptions of your body shape put you off lego :)

LeGavrOrf · 04/08/2013 22:20

Looking at those links I think it's pretty positive that such a glamorous look doesn't seem to automatically exclude those who have fuller figures. It is a very confident and body-proud look isn't it, that can only be a good thing.
