... it's the one with "it's the most wonderful time of the year" as the music. It's a sodding Christmas song!

Yes, I can see that they've been quite clever with the working of it e.g. father Christmas lookalike giving out lollies etc but it sets my teeth on edge. I don't want to hear this music in August!

(First thread in aibu - feel like a proper mnetter now)

I haven't even seen this ad

VelvetSpoon · 04/08/2013 11:55

YANBU

That bloody advert massively grinds my gears, every time I hear it I want to scream! What with that and people posting on FB how many weeks it is til Xmas...!!

isitsnowingyet · 04/08/2013 11:55

YYY - absolutely not funny - it does sound like Xmas in August!! Plus that song was done to death in another Xmas advert last year (can't remember which one)

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 04/08/2013 11:57

"We're here for you for life" Oh, FUCK OFF! You're a pissing SUPERMARKET! Angry You're not 'here for me', you want my pissing money! It's a shit advert and I'm less likely to shop there as it winds me up.

sonlypuppyfat · 04/08/2013 11:59

How on earth anyone can even afford to shop it the co op is beyond me stupid prices and stupid ad

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 04/08/2013 12:02

Their ads just get worse. 'Guud with fuud'. Oh, please! And yes to expensive! Sadly, they seem to stick a store in areas where there is very little supermarket provisions (small towns) so there's little choice for those who can't travel.

farrowandbawl · 04/08/2013 12:05

Only 143 Days until Christmas!

jacks365 · 04/08/2013 12:06

I have for so long been stuck with just a co-op but tomorrow we have a morrisons opening and I can't wait. Not seen the advert but it sounds annoying

passmetheprozac · 04/08/2013 12:06

You are totally nbu, I noticed this a few weeks ago.

pianodoodle · 04/08/2013 12:06

Our local co-op is extortionate and it isn't even a really small one :(

ThisReallyIsNotSPNopeNotAtAll · 04/08/2013 12:08

I have a co-op near me and I see people doing a full shop there and its not even that big.

Its more expensive than anywhere else as well. Especially with cigs!

DanceParty · 04/08/2013 12:20

"We're here for you for life" .........except when Asda opened up nearby you shut down OUR Co-op Supermarket within 3 weeks !

So 'Up Yours' Co-op !!

nannynewo · 04/08/2013 12:22

YANBU! I was moaning to my mum about this and she said the song is technically not a christmas song. But in america they use it as a holiday song and their holidays could be 4th July, Halloween etc... because in America they are big on their holidays!

tinypumpkin · 04/08/2013 12:23

Driving me batty too, I am glad I am not alone. I feel the need to shout 'It is a Christmas song' every time I hear it. I won't do it though, that means that they have won!

FutTheShuckUp · 04/08/2013 12:37

I remember when Staples used the song in one of their back to school ads! Now that did make me chuckle

IsaacCox · 04/08/2013 12:51

YANBU! The first time I heard it I thought I must have been asleep for 5 months! Hmm

cushtie335 · 04/08/2013 13:00

We have a co op at the bottom of our road and it's the shitest shop in the land (not co op generally, just this branch). Anyway, they were playing that re-worked Christmas song in there EVERY DAY last week and it bloody earwormed its way into my brain and won't go away now.

cornypepper · 04/08/2013 13:02

I quite like it!

LittleSporksBigSpork · 04/08/2013 13:19

nannynewo - Interesting perspective. I'm American and have said before that the British are big on holidays - because of how massive and important everything Christmas seems to be over here (whereas in the States, it can be ignored and doesn't last anywhere near as long) and the complete shut downs at Christmas and Easter (I miss being able to go to the cinema then, now we just do film days at home). Most other cultures have holidays throughout the year, maybe a holiday or song wouldn't be as precious if the holiday feeling were spread out a bit more rather than uber concentrated as it is here in the UK.

The back to school usage of the song previously was a good chuckle, and I have no issue with the Co-op ad (or our co-ops, very nice people and do a lot in the local community, cheaper for most thing than the Tesco express across the road, but agree I wouldn't do a full shop there). But then I haven't done Christmas for years, since leaving home, and it holds no value for me, and I can see how if the song is important it could be irritating to see it used that way. I don't see it, but YANBU to find the ad, or any ad, dreadful.

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 04/08/2013 13:28

Christmas is only big over here because the shops shove it in our faces. Once the summer is over they start stocking the shops up, then once Christmas is over they start stocking for Easter. There's no break.

OwlinaTree · 04/08/2013 13:28

When this ad comes on I feel the slight inner terror that I haven't bought anything yet!

Then remember it's only August.

I hate it too, although I love Christmas in December!

nannynewo · 04/08/2013 13:29

LittleSporksBigSpork Nice to hear an American point of view :) I was always led to believe Americans are very big on their holidays especially Christmas. From films etc... But I also follow quite a few too many vloggers on Youtube, most of whom are American, and they are very big on Christmas, more so than us Brits. But it could be just the part of America you are from in comparison to the people I follow daily. IMO France and America have a wide amount of holidays in comparison to Britain.

OwlinaTree · 04/08/2013 13:32

lyrics

It's definitely an Xmas song nannynewo

nannynewo · 04/08/2013 13:38

OwlinaTree Thanks, I did tell my mum that! She also agreed it should be used at Xmas but thought it may be used at other times too, hence them putting it on a summertime advert!

LittleSporksBigSpork · 04/08/2013 13:56

LadyMary, that's likely true, it probably feels more broken up in the States and other countries with lots of holidays because even though the stores do the same about moving onto the next holiday right after one finishes, it isn't just moving back and forth between two.

Most places have a lot more holidays than the UK, but most have faded here it seems, maybe time to bring something back to give more holiday breathing room. I mean, my holiday rotation has 5 or so in the year, my Jewish friends have about a dozen but it still feels like overall effort than the uber focus on Christmas. Less need for perfection when there is different chance coming up soon, I think. Or maybe I'm just lazy and can't imagine putting that much effort into one thing Grin

Nannynewo - some individual families do make it a big deal, there are massive American displays and family sites on it, but in the States, I went for walks, downtown, turn on the news, just go places and not feel surrounded by it like it is here. It feels all consuming here whereas in the States it's more individual it seems. Here I actively avoid TV and tend to stock up for December because it feels like such a drain to do most shopping with all the people and everything going on - I feel drained by it when I don't even celebrate it. So much talk about the post holiday let down, I think the strong emphasis on it is part of that.
