AIBU?

to think anyone contributing to a Christmas thread in July needs to find a life?

They're popping up already.

Instead of planning Christmas now, go out and enjoy the summer.

I need to hide the Christmas topic until December, don't I?

I love Christmas, I love everything everything about it. I look forward to it and I think about it all through the year.

You may think I'm mad / daft / weird but I think the same about people who talk endlessly about pushchairs / clothes / feeding options / any manner of things that people discuss endlessly all year round on MN.

Live and let live. And don't forget that tomorrow is August, the month that Costco get their Christmas stock in - ding-dong!

Presumably posting about people posting on Christmas threads in July is doubly sad then.....

I've got some great presents in the sales over the past weeks.

If I see something that I think someone would like I buy it.
I like to be organised. Grin

I can't be doing with all the rush buying during December.

I buy stocking fillers etc all through the year if I see good deals. I got loads of stuff for £1-£3 in tkmaxx yesterday, zoobles, moshi monsters and Melissa and Doug stuff. If I saved and waited until December to buy it they would have cost me 7 times the price.

I'm expecting dd2/3 (have a dsd) on December 22nd (so Christmas day knowing my luck).

I'll be starting to buy for Christmas very soon as I don't fancy waddling round the rammed shops in fear of my water breaking at any given moment.

I'm never likely to go camping but somehow seeing camping threads in WINTER doesn't enrage me.

It's so much better doing a little bit of shopping for presents and planning now because it's;

(a) better value
(b) has more thought put into it
(c) less stressful

Otherwise you running from the nativity play to random shops buying the first thing you see, spending a fortune and giving Great Aunt Maud a chainsaw or somesuch.

Hide the topic Mardy, please!

I have to think about it now as I need to book b&B/hotel for family members and its cheaper to do it now.

Sometimes in life you can do both! Christmas and hot summer days!

No, I havent been looking for Christmas presents personally. Do pick up bits when I see them though, whatever the month happens to be.

I take no offence, OP. I've been merrily contributing to the Christmas threads for the past few weeks due to having no life/poorly DCs and being stuck indoors, also a LOT of birthdays to buy for, now all done thanks to Reastie and her amazing bargain thread.

I like having things planned early so that I can relax and try to enjoy the Christmas period, without having to spend half of it in shopping centres!

sorry, but I'm in the YABU camp. I agree with all the bargain hunters (I have a 'christmas cupboard' and a spreadsheet of all purchases against intended recipient - I appreciate this is v sad Smile).

But the bottom line is that I genuinely enjoy all the organising and planning. Our christmas festivities and traditions start on 1 Dec and run through to New Years with activities, holiday etc. It's not about the money, it's forward planning to give my kids lots of happy memories without me being stressed out doing it. And I fully enjoy the whole of december without having to lift a finger doing christmas chores (they're all done). To me christmas isn't a present each and a turkey.

I know that's not everyones cuppa - so just hide the thread if it's not your thing.

I am making 7 quilts 230 cm square as Christmas gifts, and three wardrobes of doll clothes for little cousins as well as Christmas clothes for two of these children. Their parents are broke as church mice, but can afford lots of drink and a holiday in Las Vegas. Someone has to give them a decent holiday...
My mother is growing vague, so I hope to have everyone for Christmas lunch. It's only a roast for eight, but then I need not shovel out my folks' house.

Complaining about christmas threads in the christmas section is like complaining about aibu questions on aibu. If you don't want to talk about christmas then avoid the section!

YABU.

Why be so condescending?

There are tones of topics and threads on MN that I have no interest in....I don't go about insulting those who can't decide between a pink or purple handbag on the style and beauty forum though. If your not personally interested than don't engage.

Last week when it was 30+ degrees I decamped to the garden in my bikini and did my christmas spreadsheet, my present list and a list of things to make as presents.

Doesn't anyone else enjoy christmas shopping when the shops look christmasy though?

I don't mean running around in december in a mad panic, shops put their stuff out as early as september now although that is way too early!

It is nice walking around in november when the shops look pretty, november doesn't feel ridiculusly early nor does it feel last minute. There are plenty of bargains to be had at anytime of year nowadays and I also have lots to buy.

Christmas choir practice has begun.

This year I have quite enjoyed playing a few Christmas carols in July; it meant that I could play songs about the birth of a King, instead of the birth of the royal King!

Yup, LOVE going round the shops when it's all Christmassy, but I do only two trips to the city, everything else done online.

Trip one, take DC to buy little presents for each other (pound shop, as they get plenty as it is) and to see the lights/tree, have a meal out.

Trip two, I go alone (midweek) to have a mooch round the shops and a gingerbread latte. Everything I need has already been bought, so there is no rush or pressure. Just a lovely bit of people watching and soaking up the atmosphere.

I start buying my presents now. At the moment I can afford to buy them. I worry if we left them until the last minute and then we have some sort of financial crisis the children will end up with nothing. At least I know now that even if I don't have a spare penny on the day because of some unforeseen emergency they will at least have a few gifts to open.

As others note, each to their own - but it saddens me that it is summer with long days, flowers, lovely weather etc etc and people are spending time thinking about one day five months ahead. Live for now.

it will be dark and possibly miserable on Dec 25th, four days after the shortest day. The tinsel and sparkle does enliven a rubbish time of year - but why think about it now.

and all the pressure to buy each other clutter is so, so sad too.

Report
Arisbottle · 01/08/2013 13:35

It just seems that for some people Christmas has become a chore, so onerous that it needs spreading over the year, rather than a lighthearted festival over a few days to brighten a dark time of year.
