Girls Shorts

hodgson67 · 30/07/2013 13:02

During recent heat wave I went to buy shorts for my daughter. Tried major high street shops, my choice was really short, really short or really short shorts. Whether you think this length of shorts is suitable for young girls - I personally don't, there are almost no alternatives. Girls come in all shape & sizes & one style does not suit all. My daughter is quite slim - these shorts make her look skinny, larger girls look uncomfortable, however more than that I resent the total lack of choice. It is not pester power by my daughter, we actually had a choice of really short shorts or no shorts. One exception m&s do one pair mid-thigh one colour up to 8 yrs. Is it me, I just want a choice!

I know the feeling. I struggled to find a pair of a decent length and not denim for my daughter (12) a couple of weeks ago. She needed them for golf and short denim ones are a complete no no but that is pretty much all there is on sale for her age.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 30/07/2013 15:19

Yanbu. I don't need to buy them, but am seriously fed up of seeing 10 year old girls with their arse cheeks hanging out. I really don't like it!! Even worse is when they combine them with crop tops. It looks so so tarty. Completely innapropriate for a little girl IMO.

littlemisswise · 30/07/2013 15:25

Last week when I was on holiday, I saw little girls with such short shorts on that their knickers were hanging out of the legs/arse area. It looked bloody ridiculous.

treaclesoda · 30/07/2013 15:26

oh Shock when I said we wore short shorts when I was little, I didn't mean with our bums hanging out, I just meant short. Bums hanging out is horrible, on people of all ages.

treaclesoda · 30/07/2013 15:27

I think I might have misunderstood just exactly how short you mean.

Sirzy · 30/07/2013 15:30

I agree with others look in the boys section - all of the shorts DS has I would class as unisex.

meditrina · 30/07/2013 15:31

I hate it when there's so little choice. And end up online (when I actually prefer to go to shops).

LandsEnd Kids have these - any good? They're a site that is often worth a look for clothes that stand up to wear and tear of active children, don't have iffy slogans and are cheaper than say Boden.

DaleyBump · 30/07/2013 15:31

YANBU. I personally think shorts should be longer than your vagina.

cakebar · 30/07/2013 15:37

For children up to about 8 look in shops for toddlers, some like mothercare and mini mode go up to quite old (and I find both generous in size anyway) but you stop shopping there after they start school. They have more normal styles.

I have had problems finding me shorts this year. I don't want my arse hanging out (and nor would anyone who had to look at me) but nor do I want grannyish tailored ones. I finally found some expensive cargo shorts in Debenhams.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 30/07/2013 15:39

I managed to find three pairs of stripy shorts for DD (size 9-10) on ebay that come down to mid-thigh. All three were originally from George at Asda, but I don't know if they still sell them.

KellyElly · 30/07/2013 15:40

My DD's three (nearing 4), I found masses of choice none either too short or too long, but then I'm not of the camp that thinks she looks like Rhianna in denim shorts so maybe there just seems more choice to me. I found H&M really good, but shopped online rather than in store. How old is your DD? Maybe it's more of a problem for older girls than little ones.

Idislikemymil · 30/07/2013 15:43

Sainsburys have got some lovely shorts. Haven't had a problem with these.

irregularegular · 30/07/2013 15:46

Yes!

I think the really short shorts only look right on my daughter on the very hottest days.

I bought some really nice, slim and stylish looking long shorts for my 11 yr old from Gap. Much more useful for Guide Camp etc

PassTheTwiglets · 30/07/2013 15:51

I never had any problem finding long shorts anywhere up until about age 7 or 8 but after that they have been very hard to find.

Try these

PassTheTwiglets · 30/07/2013 15:52

Ack, sorry, ignore my last link - almost all sold out :(

wigglesrock · 30/07/2013 15:57

There were loads in May - people just didn't buy them and then the panic if its a good summer. I've posted on a few of these threads recently - shorts are the new ear piercing?

Asda and Sainsburys had great 2 packs but they're well away now. I had trouble getting jersey type, elastic waist ones for dd2 - she hates to be uncumfy Smile but I don't mind short shorts as a rule. God I was a child of the very early 80s, I think my knickers were longer than my shorts.

It's how retail works - buy it when you see it, not the week you need it. Get a receipt, don't take the tags off and if its a crap summer - return it. Same thing will happen re winter coats and school uniform buying in the last week of August.

DeWe · 30/07/2013 15:59

I made dd some. They're nearly knee length and flared in a lovely floral. they look fantastic.

SquinkiesRule · 30/07/2013 16:41

We bought Dd (who is 8 and tall wearing a 10) board shorts and Capri pants, she has one pair of proper shorts, and I was lucky that they have a decent length of inseam.
You aren't the only on complaining, all the Mums in Dd's dance class were saying the same thing, they didn't want to see butt cheeks hanging out the bottom on the shorts, most girls were wearing board shorts and capri pants

wigglesrock · 30/07/2013 16:50

Mine have lived in the £2.99 H&M dresses so far this summer.

hugoagogo · 30/07/2013 16:53

dd has these they aren't too short (although they are denim) and I found these which I love, but she has rejected Hmm

All the shops seem to be full of jumpers don't they?

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 30/07/2013 17:10

Dd wears age 7-8 and we brought shorts earlier in the year from boden, gap, fat face, m&s and next. They are short but not short short.

Fat face still had some in store at the weekend, h&m had some too. Otherwise choices were quite limited to denim styles of varying length in places like next and gap.

Boosterseat · 30/07/2013 17:19

I love these

Only have a ds but the website is great with free returns and free delivery. They arent all teeny tiny short either.

DS loves all the surf/skate style clothing and a lot of it is excellent quality too.

TheSmallClanger · 30/07/2013 17:24

If she's teenage or tall, Next do a couple of styles of longer shorts at the moment, not too pricey. I bought some for myself.

Plenty there that aren't "arse hanging out" material but it you want longer then boys shorts are the answer

Theas18 · 30/07/2013 17:27

Or a charity shop trouser hunt and a pair of scissors!

( agree with the £2.99 H+M summer dresses, we had those years ago and they were lovely)
