today in my packed lunch

half a sandwich
bag of hula hoops
grapes
small tangerine
tiny twix

for dinner

one veggie burger
two scoops veggie and potato mash

this was the same size portion as DT age 4

I know I'm an adult and can buy/ cook my own food but wondered if I'm being greedy? is that another food for an adult?

OP posts:
BringBackBod · 29/07/2013 20:55

I would replace the tiny twix with a proper size twix bar.

Superbagpuss
BMR = Base Metabolic rate : the number of calories you'd burn if you lay in bed all day
TDEE = the number of calories your body needs to stay at your current weight. Eat more than that and you gain weight, less and you lose.

To put that into real terms, 1737 is roughly
tea and a yoghurt for breakfast
a halfwich filled with tuna or ham (not cheese) and salad and a couple of pieces of fruit for lunch
unlimited tea and coffee during the day
a vegeburger, plenty of veg and then fruit or yoghurt for pudding and maybe a very small glass of wine or a couple of squares of chocolate
no snacks

talk in peace
thank you for a very detailed answer
I don't eat meat, so if cheese is bad I guess I need to cut out the sandwiches? normally I use packet soups to fill up and lose weight

OP posts:
Talkinpeace · 29/07/2013 21:06

If you are not a meat person, you are probably better ditching the sandwiches - as cheese is (wonderful but) a killer!

A tupperware box with lots and lots of strips of veg - carrots, peppers, cherry tomatoes, courgette and then a tub of hummus to dip them all in - will take you ages to eat, be really good for you and is surprisingly cheap if you fix all the veg yourselves
and maybe a hard boiled egg or two

Packet soups are really high in salt and hidden sugars .... a thermos of real soup taken from home is a good alternative

another option is to make up your own veggie / vegan pates for in sandwiches (Rose Elliott books had them)

thebody · 29/07/2013 21:07

really sorry super, thought you were at slimming world but was another poster!

I just know that if I cut out carbs it drops off. also drinking water is great.

ZingWidge · 29/07/2013 21:07

talkin

widge, please Smile

it's always a widge.

hamwidge
cheesewidge
jamwidge
and so on

even cakewidge
kk?Wink

WorraLiberty · 29/07/2013 21:10

That'd be fine for me OP

But I'd probably want a whole sandwich

pointythings · 29/07/2013 21:11

talkin is that tea with milk and/or sugar? What difference does having everything black with no sugar make, if any?

OP, roast vegetables are lovely in sandwiches and can be bulk made in advance. If you use a few interesting spices, you will only need the tiniest smudge of olive oil to make them delicious, and you can then top up with leaves and tomatoes for crunch. You can use wraps for variety.

frillyflower · 29/07/2013 21:16

I often have a halfwitch for breakfast and the other half for lunch. So today half a pret smoked salmon sandwich for breakfast and the rest for lunch. Bit of fruit and couple of squares of dark chocolate.

Dinner was roast halibut with spinach and 4 small boiled potatoes plus small glass of red wine.

I am not on a diet. That's a normal day's food.

MissDuke · 29/07/2013 21:17

Op, I think you are being unfair to dh. Surely you could have got more food yourself at some point today? You say you never eat chocolate, so it is clear he was being thoughtful by giving you a treat to make up for the half-cheesewidge (Is that right Zing?)

Have a really decent brekkie, preferably involving eggs, to get yourself off to a good start!

slightlysoupstained · 29/07/2013 21:29

Am a bit puzzled by the TDEE thing - surely if most women aren't doing enough physical activity to warrant eating 2000 calories a day, the most healthy thing to do is not to eat less, but to be more active, somehow?

Is it just because it's harder to find time for more physical activity than it is to eat less?

ZingWidge · 29/07/2013 21:34

missduke

yes, that is acceptableGrin

but a halfwitch is just scary frills please don't say that again!
I do not like the idea of an incomplete flying cackling creature!

Talkinpeace · 29/07/2013 21:35

slightlysoup
the 2000 is for somebody my height (5'5") .... anybody shorter needs less
Also people drastically overestimate the calories they burn through exercise. If I have a real gym week, and adjust my TDEE accordingly, it rises to the grand total of 1950 (that is with swimming five miles and doing 8 hours of yoga / gym classes PER WEEK)
Cutting out the odd meal (I never eat breakfast) is much easier.

WafflyVersatile · 29/07/2013 21:35

Pret a Manger sell half sandwiches.

Talkinpeace · 29/07/2013 21:37

cakewidge --- is that half a cake Grin

WafflyVersatile · 29/07/2013 21:41

sorry that should be halfwidges.

ZingWidge · 29/07/2013 21:42

cakewidge is

sponge
filling
sponge

WafflyVersatile · 29/07/2013 21:42

No!

A cakewidge would be:

bread

cake

bread.

Of course any decent widge should be

bread

filling

butter

bread.

eurochick · 29/07/2013 21:42

I think it was a bit light on calories overall and not very filling (the lunch in particular).

There are a lot of things you could substitute for the calories in the Hula Hoops and the Twix that would fill you up a lot more.

WafflyVersatile · 29/07/2013 21:43

This is why I am fat.

I don't want to get by on a halfwidge, some carrot batons and chocolate counted in squares.

ZingWidge · 29/07/2013 21:44

thanks waffly

ThirtyLove · 29/07/2013 21:45

Your lunchbox sounds lovely, I'd be well happy with that... Especially the Twix.

WafflyVersatile · 29/07/2013 21:45

Have you checked what the four year old had in her packed lunch?

She might have gotten

lasagnewidge
cakewidge
applewidge
crispswidge
winewidge

and have a very sore, bloated tummy and detention for being drunk and disorderly.

ZingWidge · 29/07/2013 21:47

when on a diet chocolate is only allowed in the form of choc chips.

one tiny piece 3-5 times a day. little pills of happiness.

tabulahrasa · 29/07/2013 21:47

I'm a bit Hmm at the fact that it's the same portion size as a 4 yr old's...

If people think that's enough food for a grown woman - then surely it's way too much for a 4 yr old? Somebody's portion is wrong somewhere, surely? (personally I think it's yours, but either way, one of them is wrong)
