To not get why maxi cosi cabriofix seems to be a must-have baby item and want to throw it out?

Want to get rid of it and baby not even here yet. We got it because we couldnt decide which pram/pushchair to get yet it seems to be the one that works with all of them as long as you have adaptors. We now have an uppababy which I dont think goes with anything else.

This weekend have spent 4 hours trying to get cover off then back on again (to wash it) - ridiculously fiddly. Thank heavens for mumsnet and you tube for providing instructions on this as the ones provided were useless.

However I'm now at a loss as to how to easily loosen the straps- they tighten easily but surely there'll be times I want to quickly loosen them to get the child in whilst carrying said child, yet the only way to get them to loosen according to instructions and google is to turn the whole thing over and open the box up at the back then pull and press the button hard (how the f*ck do I do that while manhandling a baby or do you simply have to put the child down somewhere to do it?).

Someone tell me I'm missing a trick before I really do get cross.

I had one, and I promise that when you use the damn thing it works like a charm. The base thing is great if you got that part too.

I also will say that unless you are going to the corner shop you should use the pram part. Newborns should lie flat as much as possible to protect their spines. Sorry about the lecture but it's my pet hate!

RobotBananas · 28/07/2013 14:11

There's a button just in front of the buckle - it might be under the fabric though. Press it down and pull the straps loose.

RobotBananas · 28/07/2013 14:13

Then you hook the straps over the plastic things at the sides to hold them out the way to put baby in. The pull the straps tight again.

AmandinePoulain · 28/07/2013 14:15

I haven't got a Cabriofix (and I'm as mystified as you as to why they are so popular - we've got a Britax that will last longer as the shell is actually a good few cm longer; plus it has a 5 point harness rather than a 3 point) but there is usually a button at the bottom on the front that will release the straps.

MrsAmaretto · 28/07/2013 14:16

Good lord - why take the cover off? I've never had to, with ds (3) or so far with dd (10wks).

The straps on the one we bought for dd were very stiff at first & had to be yanked to get them loose, but its not a problem to get baby out, just press the red button! Now to loosen the straps (once baby out) I just press the grey button and pull one of the straps.

And I agree with Macca - transfer baby from carseat to carry cot of pram as much as possible.

adagio · 28/07/2013 14:16

Not sure if this is the correct method as I never read instructions just guess but I press the button in front of the between the legs bit really hard whilst reaching under the seat and yank the 'loop' of grey web strap. This loosens it underneath and then you can pull the slack through the top straps. Then yank the visible bit of the grey webbing at the bottom (instead of the underneath bit) to tighten.

AmandinePoulain · 28/07/2013 14:20

Although I've never taken the cover off so can't comment on that slacker Wink

FrussoHathor · 28/07/2013 15:16

amandine I have a britax one too. They are so much bigger.

OP, the strap issue is with all car seats, not just the cabriofix. But I agree with previous posters that its just practice.

bigkidsdidit · 28/07/2013 15:25

I've never taken the cover off mine (on second child now too)...

ShiftyFades · 28/07/2013 15:25

Yanbu, I tried to use one, with daft adapters, in the shop. I did this on about 3 occasions.... I found it to be awkward and clumsy or is that just me
I bought a Mamas and Papas combination set. It was bloody brilliant and the easiest car seat I tried (I tried all of them). DS even slept in the pram as its an approved carry cot Grin

ShiftyFades · 28/07/2013 15:27

Posted too soon Sad
You will get used to whatever you use and remember, it's not forever, he/she will be in the next size up in no time.
Congratulations btw Grin

RobotBananas · 28/07/2013 16:00

Which is the bigger Britax seat please?

Madamecastafiore · 28/07/2013 16:02

You want a car seat that has hard to loosen straps, stops a child loosening them and making the journey unsafe. Cover needs to be secure and properly fitted too for safety reasons.

flowery · 28/07/2013 16:06

The straps are easy to loosen using the button underneath- should be in your instruction manual.

We only removed the cover when DS threw up all over it, not regularly.

primallass · 28/07/2013 16:09

When I bought mine (eons ago) they were the safest. The straps are easy to loosen when you need to, as explained above.

AmandinePoulain · 28/07/2013 16:13

Britax Babysafe Robots

(Why do I feel like a Britax rep every time I talk to you? Wink Grin)

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 28/07/2013 16:28

Why have you washed the cover?

We have the cabriofix, it's lovely to use. We got the family fix base so have now got the pearl. I'm sure there was a button to press to just loosen the straps.

TheGinLushMinion · 28/07/2013 16:30

They're so popular as time & again they come out as the best car seat in crash tests.

I used mine for both DC & never had to take the cover off, found the straps pretty easy too tbh...

RobotBananas · 28/07/2013 16:30

Haha, you again Grin

Thanks. I'll stop now before I hijack this thread :)

Tailtwister · 28/07/2013 16:33

We loved ours and it was even better with the isofix base. No fiddling with seat belts, just click into place. It's like anything else, once you have used it a few times you'll be fine.

As for the cover, I admit it is fiddly. I only had to wash ours once, but it was a laborious process threading the straps etc.

FrussoHathor · 28/07/2013 17:03

pobble I wash the covers too.
I have 3 sets so I can colour coordinate Wink I get bored easily, and covers are cheaper than a new buggy

The appeal to me with the cabrio fix was the easy-fix base. But I have the britax belted base with my babysafe.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 28/07/2013 17:09

We had a Maxicosi Pebble and loved it. One of our best investments. Just got it out again in preparation for DC2. I've never taken the cover off though - just sponged it down.

UppaBaby now make carseats that fit their prams - but I'm in the US and they're relatively new here so not sure if they're available in the UK yet. Could you switch if you're not happy? No point in being annoyed with something you're going to use lots if baby's not here yet.

frissonpink · 28/07/2013 17:12

Well you're confusing me!

To loosen the straps, you just press the button down and pull the straps at the top!!! Just make sure you're not resting/leaning on the front loop strap at the same time.

How is that difficult? Confused

You just press the button and pull the straps, it's stiff at first but v easy. Not sure why you're having to turn the seat over Confused

I've just taken to covers off for the first time after a poo leak emergency, otherwise I wouldn't have taken them off. It was easy to take on and off, maybe a little diddly.
What's all this threading through you're doing?

I love my cabriofix, so much lighter than the monstrous mamas and papas one my friend had
