AIBU to be a bit sad that my cat has never had sex?

The thread in chat about animals and periods got me thinking and I want to know if I am being unreasonable.

I feel really quite sorry for my current cat, she is 8 , we have had her for a year and she was neutured as kitten so has never mated or been able to be a mum.

I know it's sensible in human terms to neuter animals to prevent unwanted strays etc but sometimes I think this might be a bit cruel to the animal themselves male/female , denying them the most basic instinct of reproduction.

I mean she is only a moggy so would not be 'breeding stock' and therefore society think the best thing is to neuter really young.

Sometimes I think this just isn't really fair on the animal.

Am I being unreasonable?

Unfortunately, kittens and puppies are really pretty easy to find homes for. I'd actually go as far to say that at certain times of the year there can be waiting lists for kittens in particular.

If you say to someone 'oh, I am really sorry, we don't have any kittens just now,' they don't say 'OK fine, I'll have an adult cat.' They look elsewhere. I went in a pet shop once where a kitten was being sold for £65 Shock and she was the last of the litter. I have four kittens now and I had double the offers for them.

The problem is, cats can live for 15 years - in that time people's circumstances can change hugely and cats end up in rescue centres through no fault of their own. I'm not anti-neutering pets but part of the problem is the reluctance of people to have adult cats and dogs and people who aren't committed to them in the first place.

Thelasttimeilookediwas · 27/07/2013 18:04

i am sure she isnt missing anything it is for breeding purposes dolphins and primates have sex just cos they can the rest do it to make babies

And female primates use sex to elevate their position within their society.
Another trait we share. not nice Mumsnetters thoughWink

StuntGirl · 27/07/2013 18:39

BREAKING NEWS: Cats are not people.

curlew · 27/07/2013 18:40

They aren't "fur babies" either.

curlew · 27/07/2013 18:42

"quite alright to let them breed for human profit isn't it?"

No. That's not all right either!

MrsMook · 27/07/2013 18:53

When I went to India, the streets were full of mangy stray dogs, panfully thin, many with open sores or limping around with unusable limbs (presumably from being run over in the packed streets). I'd much rather neuter my pets than have suffering feral animals roaming the streets because of an uncontrolled population.

StuntGirl · 27/07/2013 19:08

Oh god, I skimmed some of the thread, did someone use the term fur baby?

curlew · 27/07/2013 19:12

I don't think so, StuntGirl- I was being preemptive.

StuntGirl · 27/07/2013 19:16

Oh good. Stop the rot before it sets in.

Cats are fucknuggets though

SkinnedAlive · 27/07/2013 19:28

Is this reasonable? This is what happens when cats breed out of control - www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=487666744654513&set=t.100000179001412&type=1&theater Look at him - a healthy, friendly, cute and sweet kitten - tail up in the air, humpy back and so happy to have attention and be petted. EUTHANISED. This pic makes me want to cry.

Whothefuckfarted · 27/07/2013 19:30

That's fucked up Hesterton

He thought it unfair to neuter, but fair to murder the offspring bar one?!

Sounds like he enjoyed killing them to me. Yuk. I feel sick.

Edendance · 27/07/2013 19:33

Ahhhh! This attitude does my nut! The ONLY animals who have sex for fun are humans and dolphins. Cats have no sense of loss, they don't get broody looking at other cats and their kittens and often when weaning they will get quite cross with their babies (quite rightly so when they get hassled for milk every 10 mins!) and it's quite normal for them to disown their entire litter entirely! They can (and will) also mate with their sons...

This demonstrates that the cat to kittens relationship has NOTHING in common with a woman's to her children, really.

A cat or kitten carrying a toy around believes they have killed it, is totally chuffed and wants lots of praise for it!

If you want to have kittens in your house then foster for a charity like I do, we took in 2 extra litters recently (on top of the 1 litter we already had) due to there being so many kittens being born to cats who don't get neutered. We had 13 cats in total and it was awful. If you breed a litter and manage to find homes for them all then those are homes which are taken up and can't, therefore, go to rescue centre kittens.

ANYONE not getting their cat neutered is a totally irresponsible cat owner and deserves the animals being taken off them. We have SUCH a cat problem in this country yet often the charities do such a good job people don't realise what a bad thing it is to be doing.

Whothefuckfarted · 27/07/2013 19:36

Skinned alive

That kitty is a lucky one believe it or not. Least he was gone, quickly, painlessly by euthanasia..

Some countries the population is overwhelming so people are free to hunt them however they see fit. Bows and arrows etc. They don't die quickly, they die slow painful deaths. Some don't die from their injuries, they die from starvation cause by deformation that prevents them from hunting.

lljkk · 27/07/2013 19:47

I only get OP's perspective if she's a militant vegan.

that does not stop me from thinking that humans shouldn't have carte blanche in deciding whether or or not another animal can procrate

But then we wouldn't breed them to eat them, either. Or breed them to steal their young and their milk (and wool). We wouldn't breed them even to be our pets. Heck, who gave us the right to breed them as part of conservation efforts? Compared to other things we do to animals, I think neutering is small beer (interesting that all the vegan animal shelters neuter too, I think). Taking away a cow's 2-day-old offspring & feeding it formula is lot crueler than saving a cat from a hugely shortened lifespan being dominated by its reproductive instincts.

I also give my cats jabs to stop them from getting nasty diseases, and flea drops to minimise parasites. Who says I have the moral right to impose those unnatural conditions on them? Sheesh. Naughty me.

lljkk · 27/07/2013 19:48

ps: I think it's pretty obvious that Bonobos & some other primates quite enjoy reproduction, too. Doesn't mean it's best for them to do it uncontrolled.

thebody · 27/07/2013 19:54

bloody hell!!!

if any Tom cat held down my baby by the neck my foot would be up his fat ass. she's been done by the way.

As a primate myself I kinda like the sexuals now and again but dh doesn't often bite my neck.

VerySmallSqueak · 27/07/2013 20:01

I've heard it all now!

YABU.

If it makes you feel any better my hens get plenty from our cockerel and they run like fuck every time they see him approach with a twinkle in his eye.

It's not all dimmed lighting and raunchy foreplay in the animal kingdom....
