AIBU to be a bit sad that my cat has never had sex?

The thread in chat about animals and periods got me thinking and I want to know if I am being unreasonable.

I feel really quite sorry for my current cat, she is 8 , we have had her for a year and she was neutured as kitten so has never mated or been able to be a mum.

I know it's sensible in human terms to neuter animals to prevent unwanted strays etc but sometimes I think this might be a bit cruel to the animal themselves male/female , denying them the most basic instinct of reproduction.

I mean she is only a moggy so would not be 'breeding stock' and therefore society think the best thing is to neuter really young.

Sometimes I think this just isn't really fair on the animal.

Am I being unreasonable?

How do you know she hasn't had sex? One of my neutered cats is quite the strumpet round this neighbourhood.

4thfloor · 27/07/2013 16:53

No WorraLiberty

I gave a home to a pregnant female and all her kittens found good homes.

As I said I understand why humans neuter animals, my AIBU is wondering whether humans have the right to oppose their own values on an animal

Aww sorry to her that MissStrawberry Sad

Yes, it reduces the risk of mammary cancer, amongst others.

itsaruddygame · 27/07/2013 16:54

My dog is a virgin. She is also very horny. She regularly goes to town on herself (licks her vulva whilst violently thrusting her hips) and I am pretty sure she enjoys it (whoever said only dolphins like sex and the rest of the animal kingdom just do it for reproductive purposes I think you are out of touch .....).

So yanbu - I think it's for the best that the cat is neutered but it is ok to feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for my dog - she would love a shag!

WorraLiberty · 27/07/2013 16:56

4thfloor asked what you would do if you hadn't have got your cat spayed, and you allowed her to have kittens...and her kittens to have kittens etc.

Answer that question and I think you'll automatically find the answer to your question regarding humans having the right to impose their own values on animals.

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/07/2013 16:56

Lets face it for the female cat it is rape. The male grabs hold of her puns her down, takes her by force then induces ovulation but hurting her with the barbs on his penis.
Cats who are spayer prior to having litters do not know what they are missing - it is anthropomorphic to say otherwise. If you have seen the number of female cats who have suffered by being baby making machines for their owners that I have you old have no doubt spaying is th right thing to do.

MissStrawberry · 27/07/2013 16:57

That's the one she had Sad.

mmmuffins · 27/07/2013 16:57

I know I'm proberly projecting human emotions on to an animal

Yes, you are. YABU.

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/07/2013 16:58

Spaying reduces the risk a mammary cancer only.

ImNotBloody14 · 27/07/2013 17:03

My dog has never had sex with a female dog. He's had plenty with my couch cushions though Hmm

hadababygirl · 27/07/2013 17:04

I have a cat and her 4 kittens at the moment. They are very sweet but you are being U!

Whothefuckfarted · 27/07/2013 17:05

Try looking at it this way.

Around 50% (ish) of cats/dogs 'rescued' by the RSPCA are euthanised even though they are perfectly healthy. There's just no room for them at the shelters anymore.

Say you'd let your cat have a litter, lets say she had 4 kittens, two of which were female. At the very least you just saved 4 animals from being killed for no reason.

Not saying the ones your cat had would have ended up like that. But the people who took them off your hands may have adopted instead.

Feel better?

YoniBottsBumgina · 27/07/2013 17:05

FFS, it's not about "our morals"! Hmm What do you think would happen if no cats were ever neutered OP? There would be hundreds of strays, starving, dying, getting injured. Most of them not geared up to living life in the wild because they were born to domesticated cats. Oh, and let's not bother neutering dogs either, we can have loads of wild dogs roaming around mauling the wild cats, stray children, and damaging property.

Confused

Humans made the choice to domesticate animals, it's only fair that we keep that choice responsible by limiting their numbers.

MissStrawberry · 27/07/2013 17:07

I have just looked on my local RSPCA centre and there are many many kittens and cats needing homes. Some were looking for homes when we took ours home 8 weeks ago Sad.

One lady lost her human owner and has been in the cattery for a few months now.

hadababygirl · 27/07/2013 17:11

Miss strawberry, is she West Midlands based? Sad One of my cats is an old man who lost his elderly owners. I rehomed him and he's wonderful. No trouble, just sits around purring. :) I'd love another like him! X

TapselteerieO · 27/07/2013 17:11

Our cat got pg, and had very gorgeous kittens, she was so engorged/had something wrong so couldn't feed them. We tried hand rearing her kittens but they all died, it was heartbreaking - I would never go through that experience again willingly.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 27/07/2013 17:15

taps that's so sad. They just don't do well without their mums , they often don't survive no matter how hard you try :( poor babies :(

rob99 · 27/07/2013 17:16

Are you being freakin' serious ?

ShellyBoobs · 27/07/2013 17:16

...my AIBU is wondering whether humans have the right to oppose their own values on an animal

But what is breeding and keeping cats as pets if it's not imposing the wishes of humans on animals?

Do you not see how nonsensical your thoughts are?

lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain · 27/07/2013 17:19

I feel like our dog will be like one of the 'lost boys'...able to enjoy childish fun for ever!

WorraLiberty · 27/07/2013 17:22

Good point ShellyBoobls

Also vaccinations, microchipping, dental treatment, anti biotics etc...

All necessary and all about humans imposing their wishes upon animals.

4thfloor · 27/07/2013 17:26

Yes YoniBottBum humans did make the choice to domestic cats and dogs, humans made the choice to chop of their bollocks and tie their tubes so that they didn't bother the human to much.

All I am saying is , is it right? I'm not in way suggesting that cats should be unneutered ...unless of course their a pedigree ....quite alright to let them breed for human profit isn't it?

And to turn it on it's head ...what would happen if EVERY dog/cat was neutered ......err they's eventually within 20 years therewould be no more dogs or cats .

Yes the amount of animals in shelters waiting for homes breaks my heart and I would take everyone if I could but that does not stop me from thinking that humans shouldn't have carte blanche in deciding whether or or not another animal can procrate

OP posts:
mrsjay · 27/07/2013 17:26

i am sure she isnt missing anything it is for breeding purposes dolphins and primates have sex just cos they can the rest do it to make babies

MissStrawberry · 27/07/2013 17:28

hadababygirl - no, it isn't Sad. It is the Leybourne branch if anyone is interested in taking a look. They also have a wish list on amazon if anyone is able to help financially but not with adopting an animal.

WorraLiberty · 27/07/2013 17:32

4thfloor I can guarantee you that if no-one got their cats neutered/spayed, the council pest control would have to kill them anyway.

And YY...that's not fair either but then nor is killing rats or slugs or just about anything else we have to control.

Sometimes humans really do know best.

Streets full of starving, mangey, flea and worm infested animals or neutering/spaying?
