AIBU?

What would you pay for this?

Our menu at work reads

Curry dishes - £5
(Includes boiled rice or chips - fried rice 30p extra)

Chips- £1
Fried rice £2

If, for example, you ordered a chicken curry, with chips and fried rice, how much would you expect to pay?

He hasn't got a leg to stand on because its very clear that you get the curry with either chips or rice or fried rice at 30 p extra , hence you pay if you want any combination of 2 of the above . He's an idiot !

I can't believe all the people saying £5.30?! Its clear that its rice or chips with an extra 30p for the rice being fried not boiled. Everyone's as daft as the customer Wink

I wouldn't worry, you offered him the cheapest price but maybe your boss needs to reconsider his pricing.

£6.30.

Agree with Amy - it's pretty clear that 30p is the supplement for having fried rice rather than plain rice. A bit like sometimes you pay extra to have a special type of milk in your latte rather than cows milk, etc.

It's not maths - just logic.

I really fancy some special fried rice now.

How could it possibly be 5.30? Are you mad? It's 5.30 for curry and fried rice. Why would they give you a single of chips for free?

If you order curry w/ fried rice plus a single of chips, its 6.30
If you order curry w/ chips plus a portion of fried rice, its 7.00.

My 6 year old can work this out.

At one point another customer in the shop joined in to try and explain it to him but he was convinced I was trying to rip him off so I could keep his £1 for myself Grin

£6.30, with your choice of either chips or rice you have upgraded to fried rice for £5.30 and then for an extra pound you've also got a portion of chips you carb demon you.

Sorry was trying to answer the question without looking at other answers.

You know what you could really argue this in another way that there is the slightest chance of misinterpretation but the truth is we are all so used to takeaway speak that we get it (why didn't he? weird man). Plus a simple grasp of economics would suggest a portion of fried rice would not be 30p.

If he takes it further I bet you get told to make the sign clearer. Probably be some European law about the best way to lay out chicken curry dishes on a menu.

I would have said 6.30

include the chips with the curry then add 1.30 for the fried rice

or add the 30p for fried rice to the curry and then add chips.. still 6.30

You were right with £6.30. (But would've been equally right to have charged him £7.) £5.30 is totally wrong.

As long as the sign does state or chips then you'll be fine. The only slight ambiguity I can see in the wording is that if you are pretty dumb you might think that the '30p extra' is for a whole extra portion of fried rice rather than having the rice fried instead of boiled. Can't see how that could be made any clearer except maybe wording it as something like "Served with boiled rice, (for fried rice +30p) or chips."

He hasn't got a leg to stand on as far as I can see.

He should've kept complaining really because I was this far away from giving £1 from my own pocket just to get him to shut up.

Apparently I must be loaded from all these £1s I steal off customers through the night Grin

£6.30

I would have sighed and said 'fine have it your way, that's £7 please'

What it can't be is £5.30

Boiled Rice and Fried Rice are different things, so he's had Curry with chips, and taken you up on the offer of some fried rice for 30p extra.

5.30 is an appropriate reading of the offer, and he was perfectly entitled to offer 5.30, you may or may not have been reasonable to decline, but he was quite right to take his business elsewhere.

You should make the menu clearer if you want to avoid the issue, DramaQueenOfHighC's has some text. It also would've been considerably cheaper and more sensible for you to accept his offer of 5:30, take the goodwill of the customer catching you out, not slowing down service for your other customers and wasting your time explaining things. If he does get trading standards interested enough to even pay a visit, the cost will just increase even more.
