To think calling your parents 'Mummy & Daddy' is a bit silly after a certain age..?

Example: 20 years old, mum to one, own place, but still refers to her parents as 'Mummy & Daddy'

I received a text from her when she was in labour saying 'Mummy's coming round to take me to hospital'

Often refers to them as 'Mummy & Daddy' in direct conversation and on social media sites too.

I totally cringe every time. AIBU?

yabu! I am 32. i'm irish. I call my parents ma and da. they even call each other that at times. was raised that calling your parents by their first names was cheeky and rude. I want my kids to call me "ma" always. however, I hate mummy! ugh. every mother's day its impossible to find a card that days mammy or ma. everything is mummy. I think that's more English. no irish person I know calls their mother "mummy".

Squitten · 24/07/2013 19:44

Oh God, my SIL calls her parents Mummy and Daddy and I cringe inwardly every time she does it. I always thought it was a class thing with them

fluckered · 24/07/2013 19:45

actually I am 33. wtf! the two bottles of miller must have made me lose a year.

pigsDOfly · 24/07/2013 19:45

My exh and his brothers and sister did, and still do refer to their late mother as mummy and they are very old.

When he calls me mummy to our adult children it makes me want to kick him. Particularly cringe worthy coming from a man.

Babouche · 24/07/2013 19:45

I'm with you OP.
And I'm someone whose parents insisted on being called Mummy and Daddy. After about 11 it became highly embarrassing.
I'm really glad that my 3 year old has started calling me mum.

Whothefuckfarted · 24/07/2013 19:46

fluckerd Ma & Da I have no cringing with, it's only when it's mummy and daddy Grin

Of course, I wasn't helped by my parents calling each other mummy and daddy...

Still18atheart · 24/07/2013 19:46

YABU

I'm 21 and I regularly call my mum and dad mummy and daddy. Especially, if i want something.

Or they've done something lovely for me.

fluckered · 24/07/2013 19:47

my 4 yr old roars "mammy"! I love it. one day he said mummy. I wasn't long correcting him!

DoctorRobert · 24/07/2013 19:47

I'm 35 and still call my parents mummy and daddy. only to their face though, would always refer to them as mum and dad to anybody else.

I never grew out of it and they never encouraged otherwise.

Whothefuckfarted · 24/07/2013 19:47

still18

Do you refer to them as mummy and daddy to other people though?

Dd 20 calls her father Daddy all the time but she calls me Mummy only when she's after something. It's not typical amongst her friends but they don't bat an eyelid when dd does.
Dd 10 calls us Mummy and Daddy again most of her friends have a Mum and Dad.
My boys call me Mutt and dh Dat and tbh I answer to anything.

Can't bare it! Once worked for a woman (late 30s) who called down the stairs one morning just after I'd arrived 'daddy could you make me a sandwich please?' Which he promptly did before driving her to the station so she could get the train to work (which one of her parents or PIl did every morning).

Hate HATE hearing it from anyone over about the age of 13.

MrsPercyPig · 24/07/2013 19:51

Find something more important to cringe at!

YABVU

Too many generalisations as it depends on your region and accent. I'm Northern irish and call my parents mummy and daddy.

This thread is really sad!

Salmotrutta · 24/07/2013 19:51

I do think it depends on so called "class" - I didn't mix in Mummy and Daddy circles growing up. Everyone I knew said Mum and Dad after about 5 or 6.

I do think it sounds strange when grown children say it. I shouldn't but I do.

Sometimes my two call me Mother when exasperated Hmm

IslaValargeone · 24/07/2013 19:52

YANBU My sil does this, it makes me wince.
She is not posh, but very immature and spoilt.

when referring to them in the third person, they are 'my mother', 'my mum' 'my father'.

I address them as Mummy and Daddy. Some people use Mum and Dad. Neither are a sign of low class, infantilism or anything else, so may I suggest lowering of judgy pants?

Another northern Irish , I use mummy and daddy to them and ma mummy and ma daddy when referring to them.

EeyoreIsh · 24/07/2013 19:55

my parents are mummy and daddy. several times over tried to call them mother and father but it just sounds wrong!

But, when referring to them when talking to others, they are mum/mother etc.

Bunbaker · 24/07/2013 19:55

"Can't bare it!"

Get dressed then Grin

BiscuitDunker · 24/07/2013 19:56

One of my best friends still calls her mum and dad mummy and daddy...she's 25 and a mum of 2. It makes me cringe too OP. I really thought her becoming a mother herself would put a stop to it but apparently not...

I think the irish calling their mums "mammy" is fine, but that's probably because I've watched too much Mrs Browns Boys and because weirdly it doesn't sound remotely cringey or irritating in an irish accent but "mummy" (especially out the mouth of a grown adult referring to their mum) just sounds incredibly childish IMO...

Each to their own I suppose...
