To still use a bouncy chair for 10 m/o DD?

HopHopHopSkip · 23/07/2013 23:02

DD is 8.5kg, and the chair says suitable until 9kg... but not to use once they can sit unaided.
I only just checked the instructions, so she's been sitting unaided for 2 months now with no issues.

So AIBU to carry on using it (she's in it 5-10 mins for my shower each day) and assume they're just covering themselves, or am I being awfully unsafe with her Blush

5-10 minutes?

If she's happy then leave her be.

maja00 · 23/07/2013 23:07

I wouldn't have thought it was very safe as she can sit up and tip out of it.

NaturalBaby · 23/07/2013 23:07

You've risk assessed it and think it's fine so it must be. There are far bigger worries to worry about!

Fairylea · 23/07/2013 23:08

I'd just be very careful about her tipping herself forwards out of it. That's how we knew the end was nigh for our bouncy chair at about the same age your dd is... we scared ourselves silly as we watched horrified as ds tipped himself upside down in it on the carpet! Thankfully he was fine but that was the end of the bouncy chair!

Clearlymisunderstood · 23/07/2013 23:09

I think the issue when they are sitting unaided is that they can lean forward and tip the whole thing over (as was proven to me by my DD although luckily I was sitting right next to her so stopped her banging her head on the ground)
Can she go in her cot for ten mins? Realistically you're not going to get much longer out of it regardless.

MurderOfGoths · 23/07/2013 23:13

DS wouldn't stay in one by that point and would go mad until it fell over, but if your DD wont do that then why not? But do be aware it's a risk.

polosareverynice · 23/07/2013 23:13

Mines still in his baby bouncer on occasion with a weighty pillow under it so he can't tip himself out or bounce it around the room with himself in it! Mine doesn't tolerate being in it so much now and I think this is more why there's a weight limit having said that he's still not sitting up unaided he's 10 months too and heavier than your dd nearly 10kg Blush

HopHopHopSkip · 23/07/2013 23:19

it's quite a deep one (woody friends fisher price one) so because of the straps and angle I don't think it would be possible to tip, but I guess you're right about not lasting much longer! She doesn't have a cot put up (ended up co-sleeping) and she freaks out if I'm not in the room Confused how do people manage if taking DC into bathroom during showers? Or does everyone else have quiet smiling cot-trained babies? (not jealous... honest!)

polo that's a great idea about the pillow! I have a memory foam "comfort" pillow somewhere thats like a large rock so that over the back bar should make it safer! Smile

I showered during nap time or before DH went to work.

If you can see DD from the shower and she's strapped in, that should be OK - I guess you would get some warning if she was rocking etc.

Otherwise, travel cot in the lounge as play pen? That's what we used at that age, although only for v quick visits eg toilet - I never showered when she was awake.

HopHopHopSkip · 23/07/2013 23:23

...Like a rock in weight that is, not literally like a solid stone for her to bump onto!!

I have promoted my DD from bouncy chair to dangly door bouncer. Means the bathroom door doesn't close (its in the way) but keeps her happy. (She is 7months and about 15lb ish BTW)

RunningOutOfIdeas · 23/07/2013 23:24

I have a case of beer weighing down the back of DDs bouncer chair. Otherwise she would tip it forwards.

HopHopHopSkip · 23/07/2013 23:27

adagio DD tries to throw herself out sideways in her door bouncer, she gets her arms stuck in weird angles behind the straps and all sorts! Would have been a good idea if she wasn't so lethal in it though!! Smile

pookamoo · 23/07/2013 23:28

You could always take her in the shower with you?

jacks365 · 23/07/2013 23:31

My dd comes in the shower with me and sits playing with her toys

shellsocks · 23/07/2013 23:34

I still take DS 16m in the bathroom with me when I shower/do my make up etc as he doesn't nap till 11.30 and I wouldn't leave him on his own while I get ready...I bought a bean bag armchair with a strap once he outgrew the bouncy chair, so he stays put and it's worked great Smile

HoneyDragon · 23/07/2013 23:37

This is why I loved my baby bjorn it's suitable to 13 kilos and for mobile babies Grin

HopHopHopSkip · 23/07/2013 23:38

shell do you know the brand/name of yours?

OP posts:
HopHopHopSkip · 23/07/2013 23:41

She has bad eczema so taking her in would mean the soap/shampoo getting on her, Johnson's stuff makes her react badly never mind my scented things!
plus she consistently does a huge poo each morning around shower time Hmm

Mine is red tho not gingham Grin I've had it for abt 10m now, used most days and still looks new so worth the money...and once we don't need the harness we are gonna use it as a chair for DS in the living room, which is why we got red to match the couch Grin

WestieMamma · 23/07/2013 23:49

I'm so glad you asked this as I've been wondering about the upper weight limit too. Our bouncy chair is also only rated until 9kg but our son is already almost 8 kg and he's only 3 months old. So it's more about them being able to sit up on their own than the actual weight?

NoComet · 23/07/2013 23:52

Our bathroom is tiny so I shut all the landing doors, set the stair gate and chucked toys on the landing. Nothing to fiddle with and no where to go.

HoppinMad · 23/07/2013 23:55

OP get rid. I bought the same woody bouncy chair for ds2, he was around 6 months when I sat him in it and went to the kitchen to make up his bottle. Came back in several minutes later and he was on the floor with the bouncer on top of him. Poor baby. Its really not safe to use once they can sit unaided.

My ds is 10 months too, screams if I leave him but as long as they are safe dont feel guilty to let them cry for a few minutes. Now I have a travel cot/playpen to sit him in in the living room, or the highchair in the kitchen.
