To think Blackpool is a bit shit

Just came back from Blackpool and it was utter shit. Why haven't the council there made improvements and made it a decent place to visit?

There is hardly anywhere halfway reasonable to eat, it looks completely broken and unloved. There is just so much potential for development and it could be the "Orlando" of England. Instead, it's just shite.

I've come away thinking I don't need to take my children to Africa to appreciate what they've got: just take them to Blackpool.

On a good note, the beach is very nice. Shame about the drunks weeing all over the stairs to the beach and leaving beer cans everywhere. I saw broken Britain in Blackpool and I shall never go back again.

I'm wondering how many of you I would recognise if I met you in RL! I spent many drunken happy hours in Scrooges and The Galleon, as well as Trader Jacks, The Adam & Eve, Just Ji's, Schofields, Brannigans... Grin

We used to eat at Carriages or Mammas before we went out, or Scrooges when they did food; quite often we'd walk home to Bispham, along the prom, if the night was warm.

I enjoyed living in Bispham, but would not have wanted to live in Blackpool itself. I was there for over 20 years, but moved close to Lancaster 3 years ago. I don't think I'll ever move back.

Even I don't like Blackpool and I live in Morecambe.

sussexmum38 · 23/07/2013 23:00

Our parents use to take us their as kids with great excitement of spotting the tower. I go back occasionally as it makes you appreciate most other places. The illuminations seemed magical but agree with my kids now how dated and boring it all seems. Sad really.

Suzieismyname · 23/07/2013 23:03

Vile place!

Reallynothappy · 23/07/2013 23:04

I have frequented all those establishments, yes our paths may have crossed!
I have good memories, but I do feel its gone really downhill, it feels quite depressing now :(

HondaJizz · 23/07/2013 23:05

Just Ji's!! The bus stations finest. And how could I forget Adam and Eve..it was so easy to get in underage and they used to play loads of the Cure and Smiths.

What was the other one on Central Drive / chapel St called? The one at the crossroads before the big carpark?

There was also Swans opposite the Tower...over 21's so no atmosphere but we just felt good being allowed in at 18.

"Bless Uncle Brian, a real hero and a gentleman. Nothing
was too much trouble, when we wanted a pint of vodka at
5:00am Brian woke up with a gentle call of his name and
nudge with the mop handle. When we wanted to play
jungle music at 2:00am after the pubs shut, Brian would
come in and dance. Massive breakfast, never seen so
many sausages, which me and the lads scoffed down
before hitting the pubs. Uncle Brian treated us like
real nephews even though two of us were women"

Good old Uncle Brian, eh?

Margate seafront looks broken & unloved aswell but the beach is fine and sandy. Apparantly lots of redevelopments are going on.to modernise it.

I went to Blackpool 20 years ago & it wasn't too bad then but have heard its gone downhill since then. I am not too keen on British seaside holidays mainly because I need sunshine.

cornyblend37 · 23/07/2013 23:13

I remember those wooden horses - they were terrifying

I lived with a girl from St Annes when I did my PGCE. She told us that she was posh and that her parents had a dead nice kitchen.
I was very gullible.

Reallynothappy · 23/07/2013 23:23

Is Abingdon Street market still there?

StrangerintheNight · 23/07/2013 23:23

Cutitup your original post asked why the council haven't made improvements? The sad fact is they have done a lot in the past few years - and yet it's still a dump.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/07/2013 23:24

We live quite near Blackpool...so we go to Lytham or St Annes.

Blackpool zoo is nice though - lovely sea lion pool - it's not huge but what it has is pretty good.

Morecambe.... well, its ok if what you do there is cycle along the prom (you can do a nice big triangle along canal from Lancaster to Hesketh Bank, along prom then there's an off road path back into Lancaster). OK coffee shop on the pier. If you look out over the views to the Lake district its lovely.

polosareverynice · 23/07/2013 23:31

I went to blackpool for a hen party while people who worked in blackpool were friendly and welcoming some of the clientele were not, but it had to be one of the most run down place I ever had the misfortune to be in. Had I not been with 20 other women I wouldn't have felt safe.

FuntimeFuschia · 24/07/2013 00:03

I'm a Blackpool lass :). Yes, its a bit of a shithole but it's certainly unique. I also frequented many of the previously mentioned bars, and am a little freaked out by how many of us there are on here!

stopgap · 24/07/2013 00:17

I used to go there thirty years ago. My parents made the drive up from South Lancashire every October, and we used to do the Pleasure Beach, the Tower, pick up some chips, drive along looking at the lights, then drive back home. Very fond memories.

I doubt I'd go there now, though, based on the above descriptions.

I don't think the 999 Emergency programme gave people a true reflection of what Blackpool is like to be fair. Not all local folk queue up at 12.01 in their PJ's to withdraw their benefit money so they can go and buy drugs.

tanfastic · 24/07/2013 07:27

I think it's like a lot of cities or large towns, Blackpool is huge and has some really nice areas and some really shit areas overly populated by undesirables. I live in a really nice area. If I didn't live here it's not a place I'd choose to bring my family but I'd happily go on a hen do as long as I vetted the accommodation as you get what you pay for in Blackpool. Pay £20 a night and you get a shithole.

Blackpool - the magpie of the north Grin

I agree, it attracts the cream of the crop of scumsville Grin

trinitybleu · 24/07/2013 08:16

The IL's live in Fleetwood (MIL works at the Norbreck, hello to those who stayed there!) and refuse to leave, we've even offered to buy them a house... Sad Stayed in Blackpool itself once - never again. We always stayed at the Travelodge in Lancaster and drove in each day after that!

TheRealFellatio · 24/07/2013 08:19

Blackpool is up there in the top 5 of my least favourite places in the UK. Some of the surrounding areas are very pleasant, but Blackpool itself is heinous.

BlueStones · 24/07/2013 09:07

Anyone remember Jenks? Was where all the cool kids went in the nineties.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 24/07/2013 09:24

Remember when Alan Bradley got ran over by a Blackpool Tram chasing Rita Fairclough down the prom? He deserved that, the woman-beating shyster. Death By Blackpool. A fitting end.

Babyroobs · 24/07/2013 09:30

Yanbu - I hate it, horrible place, however my kids loved it and beg to go back. I guess kids see past the tackiness.
