To think Blackpool is a bit shit

Just came back from Blackpool and it was utter shit. Why haven't the council there made improvements and made it a decent place to visit?

There is hardly anywhere halfway reasonable to eat, it looks completely broken and unloved. There is just so much potential for development and it could be the "Orlando" of England. Instead, it's just shite.

I've come away thinking I don't need to take my children to Africa to appreciate what they've got: just take them to Blackpool.

On a good note, the beach is very nice. Shame about the drunks weeing all over the stairs to the beach and leaving beer cans everywhere. I saw broken Britain in Blackpool and I shall never go back again.

Oh, I thought that too! No veg an offer. Perhaps chips followed by a toffee apple?

FunnyLittleFrog · 26/07/2013 22:41

pamish I had a prawn cocktail at the Pleasure Beach. It came with shredded iceberg and half a tomato. Grin

We all went in May and whilst it was as rough as arseholes, we still managed to have a good time, kind of....

We went to the Pleasure Beach and Sandcastle and had a brilliant time at both. We didn't venture out of the B&B after dark (because it was scary, hens puking on the street etc) but DS who is ASD and obsessed with Pringles, was happy to spend most of the evening whirling the Pringles self-service carosel round and round in the foyer of the B&B, like some sort of carbohydrate roulette.

Maybe we're easy pleased Grin

FlyingFig · 26/07/2013 23:44

Mushrooms and tomatoes were served at breakfast time, pity my DC wouldn't eat them Grin

agree somepeople
it was all south shore and central drive
those are the areas to really avoid, day and night

Dreamofthe90sisAliveinPortland · 27/07/2013 09:34

Blackpool is shit: it's Guardian-official.

www.guardian.co.uk/money/2013/jul/27/blackpool-most-unhealthy-place-england

MarmaladeTwatkins · 27/07/2013 10:57

Munching from the same smorgasbord and there was a CROWD AROUND THEM! Shock

I thought it might have been a set-up for some kind of x-rated Candid Camera but it wasn't. :(

Tweasels · 27/07/2013 11:03

"Munching from the same smorgasbord" Grin

Don't think I'd even let the cat watch let alone a crowd.

Wuldric · 27/07/2013 14:41

I am just thinking about Orlando, The Orlando of England,. And Blackpool.

You can surely see why this is a struggle. I don't know whether or not the OP was talking about Virginia Woolf (in the sense of transmogrification) or Orlando in Florida. Either way. Blackpool is no Orlando.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 27/07/2013 15:18

That Guardian article rang true. Blackpool having a churn of population of about 7500 people. With the healthy ones leaving and people with somewhat unhealthy lifestyles and sometimes chaotic lifestyles coming in.

Chippednailvarnish · 27/07/2013 15:28

I'll never look at a buffet in the same way.

legoqueen · 27/07/2013 16:46

This thread is definitely a classic, I am reeling at some of the experiences, especially Marmalade's...the trip advisor reviews of uncle brian's are incredible!

maleview70 · 27/07/2013 17:10

It's fcking grim along with many other northern towns.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 27/07/2013 17:11

not to mention Southern ones too

tanfastic · 27/07/2013 17:44

Jesus, is this thread still going Blush.

I was lucky enough to go into Blackpool Town Centre this morning. It was grim. Not the place so much though, more the tourists. Fucking classy lot arrived yesterday Wink

I am now sat in my chateau in Bispham a million miles from the chavness Grin

namechangerblackpooldefender · 27/07/2013 23:12

I grew up in Blackpool and had a great time- the bit the tourists tend to think of as Blackpool isn't the bit the locals think of IMO. I stayed away from the promenade when I could help it Grin That said I couldn't wait to get out when I was 18, but I do go back regularly and have fond memories of it.

I went to the school beginning with A Aly- the one that's now merged with another one?

TiggyD · 27/07/2013 23:24

I like a buffet. I like spreading my chicken legs out on a table for my friends. Between the well buttered rolls I like a dip or two on a lazy susan for people's crudites. A good selection of baps to put my sausage in is essential too.

thistlelicker · 27/07/2013 23:31

I'm back and survived! Very expensive 2.50 for a cone! Also the best thing today was the sun!!! On the pier they had the flying
Thingy open and a man shouted what u all looking AT??? Lots of litter, not many hens and stags!

moustachio · 27/07/2013 23:42

I heard that Hitler LOVED blackpool. He apparently visited as a child and that's why he never bombed it.

Vague article here... hitler loves blackpool

RhondaJean · 28/07/2013 00:14

We survived too!

Town centre was grim. Walked up promenade with kids. Had one drink in Yates. Bought rock. Went to hotel on outskirts. Drive to lytham st Anne's to eat.

Pleasure beach was fab. Kids are just right age and we were there whole day til chucking out time. Could have been longer!

Then drove home and for chips at Penrith at dinner. Would do it again I'd weather was good.

Got the strongest smell of hash walking up the shore though...

timidviper · 28/07/2013 00:31

Catgirl and tanfastic My DCs are grown up now and have both survived clubbing in Blackpool. They say it is actually not that bad when you know it. Both of them brought friends home from uni to go out in Blackpool, it was an interesting experience of an alien culture for them!

alythamperson and namechanger. My DCs went to that school. It is sad that the Blackpool site is now closed and will probably be knocked down and used for housing I guess. School has now moved to Lytham.

I work in South Shore and it has some of the worst deprivation you can imagine. Amazing that it is such a short distance from Lytham St Annes to there but such a contrast.

Funny Girls is still going and is marvellous.

RhondaJean · 28/07/2013 00:33

Btw we noticed most of the accents we heard round about were scots! And I never saw any shell shops...
