AIBU to think that if you really hate smoking in public so much you should sign the below petition...

Everytime I look on AIBU I see people complaining about smokers in public and how disgusting it it. If so many feel that strongly about it, maybe some of you should sign the below petition and get the idea debated in the house of commons. I hear the notion of a public smoking ban with only smoking allowed in designated areas works well in several US states. So well that people can't believe they let people smoke all over non-smokers for so long.

Ban Smoking In Public

Pickle131 · 23/07/2013 22:34

Thank you! I'm so fed up having to sit indoors in eating places because smokers take the outdoor seats and stink the place out. Or to cross the street because I'm down wind of one of them.

Mrsdavidcaruso · 23/07/2013 22:35

Yes lets ban smoking all together and then see what happens when the country loses the extra tax that smokers pay.

I think the anti-smoking laws in the country are quite adequate as it is, as long as like me smokers don't smoke in illegal areas and like me dispose of their butt ends in the bin or a portable ashtray.

ThePrinceofCambridge · 23/07/2013 22:35

One of the problems Goths is smell.

Smoking reduces ones sense of smell and you cannot understand how strong clothes, and everything else smells of smoke when you do not smoke.

So people who are considerate and smoke just don't understand the reach and extent of their smoke or how it inflicts non smokers lives.

If they want to be considerate they need to wear a special mask over their heads.

MurderOfGoths · 23/07/2013 22:36

ThePrinceofCambridge I hate smoking and agree the smell is vile, but unless we make smoking illegal completely I don't think banning it in public is right.

ArgyMargy · 23/07/2013 22:39

Oh no, mrsdavidcaruso, we can't let you get away with that tax nonsense. The NHS spends many many times more money treating the complications of smoking than the government gets in fag tax. And don't even think about arguing that - it is comprehensively proven and accepted.

Tullahulla · 23/07/2013 22:43

Aaaaaaah, the good old nanny state strikes again!

If I'm out in public, I will smoke, albeit I try to be as considerate as I can, not in doorways or near groups of non smokers - I already feel very much like a leper anyway.

All smokers know the health risks, yes the smoking ban has been good for those who choose not to smoke - but to try and ban it in public - aye right you are!

ThePrinceofCambridge · 23/07/2013 22:44

But why not, I have to have my neighbours smoke because they do not want to make their house smell, so I am a prisoner unable to access basic fresh air?

Why not make them smoke in their own spaces?

Even ASH is encouraging people to live in smoke free homes, spectacularly missing the point that lots of smokers live in dense housing and are dragging others down with them in their dirty habits.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 23/07/2013 22:44

Yeah, I'll sign it, as soon as they ban dogs. And SUV's. Well, any cars actually, since the fumes make me gag. And men with their shirts off in public. And people with BO. And people with bad highlights and those cheapie "ballet" flats they can't walk in. Girls in Aztec print leggings. And all perfumes made by Katie Price called things like "Glitzy" and "Pink Surrender". Also people who talk too loudly in public (especially to their children). And their children.
Until that happens I am going to enjoy walking past groups of happy smokers outside the pub whilst inhaling the smoky emissions of people who may be giving themselves cancer but at least don't have their heads up their own arses.

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2013 22:46

God I feel embarrassed for some people

What a stupid petition

misterioso · 23/07/2013 22:48

YABU

Smokers have enough restrictions and also if you think Gov will listen you are wrong, as they earn far too much money from smokers to be bothered tbh. It would be like banning it all together and it would cost Gov millions.
Just walk away if you don't like it.

lessonsintightropes · 23/07/2013 22:51

IfNotNow love it Grin

YouTheCat · 23/07/2013 22:54

What IfNotNow said.

feetlkeblocksofice · 23/07/2013 22:58

Oh dear lord what a silly petition. If this was to pass we'd have meter readers suing for the effects of passive smoking from entering all those smoky homes that us dirty smokers are banished to Hmm

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2013 23:02

If you want to start a petition about smokers, start one demanding a change in the law so that it's illegal to smoke indoors with children in the house.

Not just because you feel your whiney, pearl clutching opinion should be taken into consideration regarding whether public smoking is disgusting or not.

LastTangoInDevonshire · 23/07/2013 23:16

People who have signed "because they are fed up of their neigbours smoking"..............

you do realise that if they are smoking on private property the ban will be ineffective? This calls for banning it IN PUBLIC.

And for all of you moaning about people smoking outside buildings.........YOU wanted it banned INSIDE, so put up with it.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 23/07/2013 23:21
Salmotrutta · 23/07/2013 23:27

ArgyMargy - show me the figures.

Every thing I have ever read states that the Govt gets about £10 billion in tobacco tax BUT smoking related illness uses up £3 billion in treatments.

I await your figures (with links) that disprove this.

Plus smokers will die younger and not linger on for decades clogging up getiatric beds and care home slots.

Pendeen · 24/07/2013 00:13

If you want to ban smoking, I mean really stop it altogether, then be honest about it, do it properly and convince the UK population, their elected representatives and the media that an outright ban is (a) possible (b) enforceable (c) financially viable and (d) supported by a majority of us all.

No?

Didn't think so.

(Non smoker BTW)

SoniaGluck · 24/07/2013 01:35

And don't even think about arguing that - it is comprehensively proven and accepted.

Interesting.

But like Salmotrutta, I would also like a link to the figures.
Otherwise, I may just think of arguing.Hmm

garlicagain · 24/07/2013 01:51

Sadly, lessonsintightropes, publicans aren't coping. It's fully accepted that the smoking ban is behind swathes of pub closures.

garlicagain · 24/07/2013 01:53

I'm signing all of IfNot's petitions, while quaffing a relaxed pint at one of those rare pubs with a decent smoking area Wink

Monty27 · 24/07/2013 02:00

----o}}}}}}

hmmm nothing like a good smoke.

Op are you perfect? No, thought not. Do take a hike.

Respect to all non-smokers supporting the afflicted in our addiction Grin

Monty27 · 24/07/2013 02:02

Mrsdavidcaruso · 24/07/2013 13:00

Er Argy read my post again I said TAX and TAX money goes on more things then the National Health Service doesnt it?

manticlimactic · 24/07/2013 13:23

while quaffing a relaxed pint at one of those rare pubs with a decent smoking area
