AIBU to not give a monkeys about royal baby

Thats it really. A wealthy woman who has married into a wealthy family who takes even more money from hard working people is having a baby. So fucking what! I cant understand why people cow tow to a group of people who are unelected and have no admirable qualities at all. Before you tell me how much money they bring in - imagine the increase in tourism if we could actually get into the properties that we own once we kick them out.

peanut - you are spectacularly missing the point by saying "if you don't like it, don't watch or listen to any of it. It's that simple"

Because it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to avoid it. It is now going to be news saturation for days and days. You won't be able to switch on any news programme on TV or radio. You won't be able to open a newspaper. You only have to look at Daily Mail online to see the ridiculous overload already including stuff about what flipping star sign the baby is going to be.

Speaking as someone who doesn't want the Monarchy done away with, it's still far too much for what is something pretty unspectacular. As someone else said, this has had more attention today than the passing of the same-sex marriage bill received last week and I know which is the more important and newsworthy.

YonisAreForever · 22/07/2013 11:37

Oh and by the way, If I ever met the Queen I would not bow or curtsey but simply be as respectful as I hope I am to anyone especially the older generation.

lljkk · 22/07/2013 11:42

95% yanbu. I don't resent them, but I truly am only 5% above totally indifferent. The birth of said heir should occupy max. 5% of news coverage on the day it actually happens (only that day) and then move on.

Just hoping it goes quickly & smoothly. Not least because I don't bear KM any ill will, but also badly want to avoid dozens of extra stories about every aspect of her difficult confinement, argh.

NicholasTeakozy · 22/07/2013 11:47

It's not had a mention on RT, hopefully it'll stay that way. Though Max Keiser is bound to reference it somehow Hmm :o probably along the same lines I did.

usuallyright · 22/07/2013 11:50

YABU. The Royal family are amazing, especially our incredible Queen. And whatever you or any other monarchy basher says, they'll be around for a very long time because every single popularity poll shows that over three quarters of UK residents support them.

onetiredmummy · 22/07/2013 11:53

Loving royal magic baby!!

Personally I don't much care what comes out of the royal undercarriage either.

PeanutButterMmm · 22/07/2013 11:53

Of course they bring in millions of tourism - the Chinese and Americans especially love all that stuff!

Jessica - you are moaning about it all but here you are on a thread about... the royal babyHmm There are hundreds of threads on MN that aren't about the baby yet you chose this oneConfused

A baby who will one day be the King or Queen of this country is pretty big news - especially if it's a girl who will be the first girl in history to be next in line whether she has a brother or not.

Wallison · 22/07/2013 11:56

Arf @ royal undercarriage and Magic Royal Baby.

FreudiansSlipper · 22/07/2013 12:01

what the Chinese and Americans (not all are big fans of the royals some are indifferent) would stop coming here if we became a republic of course not

this country has so much to ooffer tourists the royals are just part of our tourist culture for some

i am sure if Harrods and Selfridges closed down it would have a bigger impact on tourisim

melika · 22/07/2013 12:02

Well.....it is sad that his Mom is not alive but my nieces lost their Dad (through violence) when 2years and 3 months old and have lived in virtual poverty with extended family filling all the gaps as best as we could. Now their Mom (my sister)aged 56 has cancer and has had her op cancelled now awaiting another date.

Worse things can happen, and it has.

PeanutButterMmm · 22/07/2013 12:06

It is probably worth doing some research on how much the revenue the royals bring in. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean anyone can deny what they do for this country - the queen in particular.

brdgrl · 22/07/2013 12:06

Arf!
I think in fact you will find that there are a great many Americans, Chinese, Irish, Indians, French...fill in the blank... who feel very, very strongly indeed that the monarchy system is repulsive and corrupt, and that the British monarchy in particular is rather vile.

ToysRLuv · 22/07/2013 12:11

I think some of us are just born/raised to be willing subjects, and some of us aren't.

freddiefrog · 22/07/2013 12:11

It's not so much that I'm not interested, but fed up with all the fuss and speculation.

The baby hasn't been born yet, we don't know the sex, the name, etc.

There's nothing to be interested in yet, other than woman goes into labour. I don't need to know that, tell me when the deed is done.

PeanutButterMmm · 22/07/2013 12:13

And who said every American and Chinese person ever born loves the royal family? I can be said that alot of Americans and Chinese people love all that stuff with the assumption that every person loves them. Way to twist words to suit your argument eh.

FreudiansSlipper · 22/07/2013 12:15

i have peanut and it is always conflicting

i used to work in harrods of course some tourists would hope to see diana walking around (she was and they missed her) but it was not the only reason they were there

and have you been up oxford street recently it is always full of chinese tourists many love the shopping here along with our historical buildings, galleries, theatre and our diverse culture

PeanutButterMmm · 22/07/2013 12:16

Freddie - which is why they announced she was in early labour and said they will not give anymore news until the baby is born. It's not like they are tweeting every twinge and contraction is it!

There will be fuss and speculation because there always is when something big happens.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 22/07/2013 12:17

The monarchy brings in tourists? Just have a little look at the visiting figures for say Hampton Court (just over half a million) compared to the Palace at Versailles (6m)...

squoosh · 22/07/2013 12:17

The Romanovs are still a big tourist draw.

Wallison · 22/07/2013 12:18

Tbh I have a lot of respect for old Queenie - I think she does mostly a good job and a lot of what she does is pretty boring. I wouldn't like her life, even with all the money that goes with it.

The rest of them are a different matter though. Will the monarchy still be as popular once Tampax Charlie gets on the throne? I don't think so somehow.

Regardless this endless knicker-wetting about the MRB is already starting to grate because it makes the press look infantile.

usualsuspect · 22/07/2013 12:18

Tourists would still visit the UK if the Royal family were kicked out.

Fakebook · 22/07/2013 12:18

👶👶👶👶

cheerfulweather · 22/07/2013 12:19

As I said on the other, similar, thread. I care as far as I hope they have a healthy baby and safe delivery, but I'd wish the same for any baby being born.

I've hidden all the threads discussing the pregnancy/name/birth/baby. I'm just not interested in the current royal family, no place for them in this day and age.

brdgrl · 22/07/2013 12:21

Its not twisting words, peanut, as no one is claiming you said "every" or distorting your statement.

I see exactly what you said, and am offering a contrary view. If you are saying that some foreign tourists love the monarchy, yes, that's probably true. And some hate and detest it.
