To be absolutely fuming with myself over £20?

Turniptwirl · 21/07/2013 15:46

I just withdrew £20 from a cashpoint and took my card but somehow forgot to take the money! When I realised a few minutes later and went back it had gone but I don't know whether someone took it or it got sucked back into the machine. If the latter, does anyone know how soon it would go back in my account? I bank with co op if that matters.

I know it's only £20 but I really can't afford to throw money away like that and I am fuming with myself! I can't believe I could be so stupid!

It won't have been sucked back in.

I found £20 sticking out of an in-branch machine the other day and handed it in. It also had the receipt sticking out too, so the people at the desk would be able to check who the owner was if they went back to try and get it.

I'm sorry that you lost the money, though.

Branleuse · 21/07/2013 15:50

just go into the bank tommorow. It probably got sucked in. It does it quite quickly

Oldraver · 21/07/2013 15:50

My OH did this with his last ten pounds before he got paid...he went back straight away but the woman who had been behind him totally denied it.

I hope she chocked on whatever she bought with his money

DoubleTops · 21/07/2013 15:51

I have done this before, it did get sucked back in but i had to ring the bank and let them know.

iwasyoungonce · 21/07/2013 15:52

I've had mine sucked back in before when I walked away, then turned back and just as I reached the machine, back in it went! Hope that's happened in your case!

EllieArroway · 21/07/2013 15:52

It probably got sucked in. It does it quite quickly

Does that happen, then? If it does, apologies, I had no idea.

Hope that happened with yours, OP & you get the money back.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/07/2013 15:53

God what horrible people. I would always hand it in. Its a lot to loose. I lost 20quid recently and was in tears as I was so mad at myself. I went out looking for it and bumped into a neighbour and asked him if he had seen it. He said no.

The next day he knocked at my door with 20 quid that one of the other neighbours had found and had mentioned in passing. He knew it was mine so brought it over for me Smile

I love my neighbours.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/07/2013 15:54

After a certain amount of time Ellie the machine re ingests the money.

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 15:56

If it got sucked back into the machine, you need to speak to someone in the bank asap. I was surprised to find that it DOESN'T get automatically recredited to your account, as apparently they don't know whose money it is. They will do a check tomorrow and if the machine is UP then they will put it into your account tomorrow, but you MUST tell them.

EllieArroway · 21/07/2013 15:56

That's good to know, Puds.

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2013 15:58

I have done the same, and it got sucked back in. When I went to ask in the bank, they told me it got sucked back in after 7 seconds. Coop.

RoooneyMara · 21/07/2013 15:58

Ring the bank now, just to let them know what time it was etc.

You may get it back - a long, long time ago (before the sucking in thing, I imagine) I found a tenner sticking out of a branch machine (outside in the street) and took it into the branch and they said they could trace the person. Not sure how but anyway, I was glad I did it.

But that was like, 15 years ago? I imagine they all reclaim the cash now.

DeathByTray · 21/07/2013 16:01

Well, you live & learn! I never knew that the money would get sucked back in.

It's good to know though.

Hope you get it back OP.

Turniptwirl · 21/07/2013 16:05

Thank you for the responses, I've just phoned my bank who have raised it, they said it can take 15 days to sort out so fingers crossed it got sucked back in and they'll give it back to me.

I've done it. Saw someone walking away with 20 quid in their hand. Claimed they hadn't seen it Angry

TheHandbagOfGlory · 21/07/2013 16:12

Once at Christmas shopping time I waited ages in a huge queue for the cash machines in Glasgow and when my turn came there was £200 sticking out the cash line that the woman before me hadn't lifted up, by the time I got to the machine she had disappeared into the crowds, I withdrew my money and took the £200 into the bank, I really hope she got it back. It was such a lot of money.

When I told people about it they were shocked that I had handed it in Confused I could never have pocketed it.

ShellyBoobs · 21/07/2013 16:14

I forgot to take some money from the machine once, OP.

I thought I would just lose it as someone would have taken it - it was about 30 mins before I realised what I'd done - but it was back in my account quite soon without me doing anything so must have been sucked back in.

Fingers crossed for you!

I've done it. Saw someone walking away with 20 quid in their hand. Claimed they hadn't seen it

What does that mean, Kitten?

I'm probably being thick but I can't get what you mean.

Sparklingbrook · 21/07/2013 16:16

Your card will get sucked back in too if you don't take it and nobody steals it.

When it gets sucked back in it goes into a tray inside the cashpoint that gets balanced.

pinkmoomin · 21/07/2013 16:24

I did exactly the same trick last month. I phoned the bank, they sent me a reclaim form and they paid the £30 back into my account about a week later. Yes, the money gets sucked back after 10 seconds. Hopefully there was no one behind you in the queue. Don't feel bad about yourself, it sounds like this happens often.

mrslyman · 21/07/2013 16:28

This happened to me, I called the customer service team for my bank and told then what happened, time, which ATM etc and a refund appeared on my account a couple of weeks later.

I felt like a total idiot too, but it's easy to get distracted sometimes.

Peachyjustpeachy · 21/07/2013 16:33

We found 10 sticking out of a machine in bournemouth. Dd and I took it into the bank. I took the opportunity to explain finders keepers. It wasn't a case of finders keepers here because we could trace wbo it belonged to, but whenshe found. A fiver on the deserted beach, that was.

RumAndBoak · 21/07/2013 16:35

This happened to me- withdrew £100 quid and walked off without it at petrol station- bank said someone had taken it when the machine was not 'up' on money. The police then got involved and prosecuted the man behind me for taking money. I felt bad that I was so stupid and felt like I was wasting police time but at the same tome furious at his dishonesty. they took it seriously and it was all on CCTV.

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 16:36

I left £30 at the self service till the other day, they DON'T suck it back inside, and the scumbag behind me picked it up and pocketed it Sad. I really hope that they needed it more than I did!

MissDuke · 21/07/2013 16:36

This happened to me once in Glasgow, I walked away from the machine and heard the young people who were in the queue behind me laughing then they quickly walked away in the opposite direction, and kept looking back round at me, walking very fast! - I looked in my purse and realised I hadn't lifted the money :-( It was £60. I was raging with myself!! I didn't even try going after them, they would def have out run me ;-)

I have never done it again needless to say! Hope you get yours back x

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/07/2013 16:38

I did this once, and the lady behind me took it into the bank, and it was put back into my account. It was only £10, but I was a student on a very tight budget, so I really appreciated it.

On another MN thread, someone told the story of finding £500 in the cashpoint, and said that it was OK for her to keep it because she donated £250 to charity. She seemed to have no understanding or conscience about the fact that she had basically stolen this money from someone.
