To be absolutely fuming with myself over £20?

Turniptwirl · 21/07/2013 15:46

I just withdrew £20 from a cashpoint and took my card but somehow forgot to take the money! When I realised a few minutes later and went back it had gone but I don't know whether someone took it or it got sucked back into the machine. If the latter, does anyone know how soon it would go back in my account? I bank with co op if that matters.

I know it's only £20 but I really can't afford to throw money away like that and I am fuming with myself! I can't believe I could be so stupid!

I've done that before. The woman behind me completely denied she'd taken it but she had, she made some cock and bull story about the machine not giving out money to her so it mustn't have actually spat mine out either.

I was gutted especially because if there was karma I would have got it back. Two weeks before I had been behind a guy who was all dressed up for wedding and quite drunk with two girls and he was getting out a massive wad of notes - must have been at least £300 and he walked off without it and i had to chase him to make sure he got it. Unfortunately karma did not work for me that time!

I did this at the self service at ASDA, drove home and realised went straight back and asked if it was left. The security guard went and looked at the CCTV footage to see if it was taken by someone they recognised, then the police would be able to get it back. Didn't though. Was fuming with myself for about a week!

Hope you get your money back OP.

I'm sure they can trace it and see the next transaction after yours, think they possibly have cameras at hole in the walls so def raise it.
The police I'm sure would look into people taking cash back that the shopper before has failed to collect, its theft.

ClutchingPearls · 21/07/2013 16:48

I've walked up to a cash machine and had to wait a good while for it to suck it back in. I just hung around to make sure no-one took it and then spent the rest of the day wondering if I had failed at one of those hidden camera shows.

Good for you TheHandbagOfGlory - personally I would (and have done) do the same by handing it in. It's nice to know there are still some honest people about. I've been on the receiving end (my handbag and whole weeks wages, credit cards etc were stolen).

TurnipTwirl - I really do hope your money got sucked back into the ATM rather than taken (would it show on a bank statement/online banking)?

OhTheConfusion · 21/07/2013 17:54

I once came up to the cashline at our local shop as a lady walked away, I faffed about getting my card etc out and only then realised she had left a wad of money (over £200) in the machine. I sent DS to chase her, and she began to run thinking he was trying to rob her Blush. After a moments confusion all was well and she got her money back.

The following week she was using the shop again and told the story to the assistant. The assistants son was in DS's class at school and the shop gave him a box of choc's for being so kind!

I've done this more than once, unfortunately - and I know how you feel, really frustrating isn't it?

If no-one has taken the money then it will be sucked back into the machine and you'll get in back. Call and speak to your bank. I did with mine and they were very friendly and helpful - apparently this happens quite often!

JackieTheFart · 21/07/2013 19:23

Normally if it has been sucked back in it will re-credit your account in 48 hours. This apparently is the case whether or not the ATM is owned by your bank or not.

If it doesn't, and your bank have to contact another bank, it can take some time.

givemeaboost · 21/07/2013 19:37

how frustrating, I did the same at a self service till the other week, only £10 but was skint so really mad with myself. I've also requested it at a manned till and the till operator has failed to give it to me and I've gone home without realising, have now vowed never to request cb at the tills again!

thefuturesnotourstosee · 21/07/2013 19:45

I used to work night shift 10pm to 6am. I was walking back from work at 6.30 one morning and saw a big pile of cash sticking out of a cash machine £150. I took it home with me then called the bank after they'd opened to say I had it but was working odd shifts and would drop it in at the weekend which I did 3 days later. That was nearly 20 years ago so it was a lot of money back then and was about what I was earning each week possibly more I don't remember. I was so tempted to keep it but would never have lived with myself. I hope whoever it was got it back.

I hope you get it back too OP

MrsGSR · 21/07/2013 20:27

I don't know anything about the original OP, but to the person who said about a cashier at a supermarket forgetting to give cashback: If you have your receipt go back to customer services and they should check to see if the till is out by £x that should have been given to you. I worked on the customer service desk for a while and people who came back, even a few days later, usually got their money back, as we checked the records to see if the tills had balanced at the end of the day.

Unfortunately with self service tills unless the person behind hands it in, there is nothing the supermarket can do.
