Meryl Streep et al murdering Abba.
Christ on a bike.

Mmmm, got this for Mother's Day a few years ago. Eventually took it out of the wrapper and watched it a few weeks ago...and wished I hadn't bothered!

Although...the storyline itself was quite funny. If this had been a foreign comedy with unknown characters and no Abba soundtrack (think along the lines if Mediterraneo) it would have been a rip roaring success in my book. Meryl Streep, Pearce Brosnan and strangulated renditions of classic pop...erm No.

LackaDAISYcal · 20/07/2013 22:08

kim147, isn't that what flashmobs are all about?

MrsSparkles · 20/07/2013 22:09

YABU - its so much fun! In fact DH and I were discussing today why this was so successful, but Viva Forever just folded and We will rock you is rubbish (the story not the music).

I think we just love ABBA. I have it on DVD yet always find myself watching it on ITV2 when it's on.

squoosh · 20/07/2013 22:11

It would appear that all the Mamma Mia fans are also exclamation mark fans.

I'm sure there's an important message there, I'm just not sure what it is yet.

FreudiansSlipper · 20/07/2013 22:16

its utter crap meryl and co look at us we are crazy and having such a great time being crazy

and the oh so funny bit after the credits is utter rubbish

lymeregis · 20/07/2013 22:20

I love it.

KatOD · 20/07/2013 22:41

Nope it truly is utter dogshit and it is time I will never get back.

anonacfr · 20/07/2013 23:06

Come on Grease is shite!!!! The actors are all 20 year older than their characters and way to teach girls how to get their guys...

MM made me laugh because none of them could sing (Brosnan and Firth in
particular were just diabolical) but they all look like they're having so much fun.
And no, Streep did not get nominated for an Oscar.

MrsDimples · 20/07/2013 23:11

YANBU x a million.

ComposHat · 20/07/2013 23:17

i saw the second half of it on TV and it was so bad I thought it was a parody. I couldn't believe it was so awful so had to watch til the end.

utter wank.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 20/07/2013 23:20

It is great. Cheesy, fun & lighthearted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iclaudius · 20/07/2013 23:26

Torture utter torture
Embarrassing

ClartyCarol · 20/07/2013 23:27

Watched it with DH - his verdict "What. A. Fucking. Pile. Of. Shite." Spoken exactly like that, with fullstops and capital letters.

I rather enjoyed it and even downloaded the Mediterranean Leprechaun and Sophie's version of Lay All Your Love On Me.

I'd love to go to Santorini.

QuickQuickSloe · 20/07/2013 23:30

YANBU

It's an hour and a half I won't get back.

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/07/2013 23:30

Yanbu yet I find it perversely enjoyable Blush

FunLovinBunster · 20/07/2013 23:31

Even the mention of MM is making me feel stabby.

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/07/2013 23:31

Clarty

I think that version of Lay all Your Love on Me is in large part why I like the film. Which makes it worse really Blush

SorrelForbes · 20/07/2013 23:32

I'll give a second vote for Grease 2. How can you not admire the brilliance of lurics such as: Reproduction, reproduction, make my stamen go berserk.

LondonMan · 20/07/2013 23:36

I saw the movie a while ago, it's definitely the worst thing I've ever seen, in 15 years of watching every movie that Sky put out.

I'd say it was like watching paint dry, but it wasn't that interesting, more like watching dry paint.

The only time it came alive briefly was in scenes featuring the daughter. (To long ago to remember her name.)

I speak as someone who watches and usually manages to enjoy virtually every chick flick I come across.

filee777 · 20/07/2013 23:36

I love it, I do agree that meryl and pierce are awful in it though

Just a great film!

I also love Chicago and of course grease.

CanadianJohn · 20/07/2013 23:37

Loved the stage version, hated the movie.

squoosh · 20/07/2013 23:38

Poor Pierce, a lovely man who's had a tough time lately.

ElephantsEye · 20/07/2013 23:45

I like musicals.
I like Colin Firth.
I like Meryl Streep.
I like Julie Walters.
I like Pierce Brosnan.
I like Greek scenery on the telly.
I like Abba.

Can't stand Mamma Mia.
Thanks OP; until I read your thread I thought I was alone.

Stereolab · 20/07/2013 23:45

I have never watched MM. People have always insisted that it is wonderful. I refused to believe them.
This thread makes great reading. Vindicated at last. How can a plot squeezed from the lyrics of Abba's back catalogue possibly be worth watching? And a singing Pierce Brosnan ...........

creighton · 20/07/2013 23:45

you youngsters clearly don't know what a good musical is. singing in the rain is the ultimate musical, grease is nasty and vulgar, mama mia is just sheer indulgence for all involved, the scenery is very nice.
