My 23 month old son wakes at 5.30 to 6am every day

Which is fine, it is just his sleep pattern. He goes asleep at 7pm every night. But I keep thinking of a previous AIBU thread where parents who let their toddlers watch 2-3 hours of tele a day were flamed, in particular one poster said parents who do this "obviously their heart isn't in it"

So AIBU to think these same parents don't have an early riser...

Because my heart is very much into parenting, but from 5.45 to hopefully 7.15 I can manage to lie in bed whilst DS watches the iPad... Or am I supposed to be bouncing around downstairs coming up with fun filled activities at dawn?

(For the record he also watches the bedtime hour on cbeebies - wind down time.. - hence the 2-3 hours)

Yep, 5:30 start here, hanging on for Cbeebies to start at 6. Just had breakfast in bed in front of Bob the Builder Blush

Tbf, we have been up most of the night as DD has just come down with chicken pox and hasn't slept for more than half an hour in a row all night :(

MalcolmTuckersMum · 20/07/2013 07:34

I don't wish to alarm you OP but my early riser - anything between 4am and 7am considered fair game - has only just got the hang of lying in. That child is now 23. :) I remember many a wretched morning watching The Morning Line on C4 or some Godforsaken sports roundup programme - these were the days of only 4 channels - and only two of them woke up before 7!
So I know your pain and believe me, if I could have had a telly in every room I would have done so!

Kahlua4me · 20/07/2013 07:39

Ds is 10 and still wakes up before 6. The only difference is most mornings he doesn't need me to entertain him!

But I can no longer sleep in and always wake before 7.

LadyMilfordHaven · 20/07/2013 07:39

Will always be thus. Mine took 14 years to lie in

ballinacup · 20/07/2013 07:40

My boss has a 17mo DS, I have an 18mo DS. Yesterday she told me she has to wake him up at 9am on weekends. I could have wept with envy.

attheendoftheday · 20/07/2013 07:41

Dd1 woke 5-5.30 every day until we got a gro-clock when she was 22 months. It's worked really well for us, she stays in her room (though not necessarily asleep) until 6.30 pretty much all the time now.

Oh, and YANBU.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 20/07/2013 07:45

Do you know what's depressing....I'm awake sat here mumsnetting and my lot are all still asleep. They won't surface for another hour and I have lost the ability to lie in after years of early starts aaarrrggghhh...they really do ruin your life :)

IceBergJam · 20/07/2013 07:48

DD 19 months up 0445-0515 each morning. Disturbs through the night. When do you consider glow clocks ? Do they work in a cot?

Glad I have an understanding boss!

LtEveDallas · 20/07/2013 07:48

Oh yes. I wake between 0500 and 0530 daily, no matter what time I go to bed. It's partly because of my glass back, but also because of all the years of waking with DD. I can survive on a ridiculously small amount of sleep now. It's not a skill I relish Grin

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 20/07/2013 07:58

Indeed LtEve :)

SleepyFish · 20/07/2013 07:59

I too have lost the ability to lie in due to 5 years of early wakenings. DS has 2 choices, he can go back to bed or play quietly in his room. I often wake up to some pretty amazing lego creations. Before he was old enough to reason with however, it was cbeebies all the way.

ExcuseTypos · 20/07/2013 07:59

My dd used to wake very early. This was 20 years ago when there was no children's early morning tvShock. We used to put on Postman Pat and Noddy videos.

Those videos saved my sanity!

She still gets up early-even now. I did I tell her students aren't supposed to get up at 6 am, but she doesnt listen.

Lindalucky · 20/07/2013 08:04

My 4 year old get up VERY loudly at 5 am EVERY morning waking. Drives us mad. She wont sit and watch telly she is singing and running around. We have tried everything for a later start or just a quieter one- with no luck.

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/07/2013 08:09

My eldest never really slept past 5am and we didn't have cbeebies then. God it was awful. I used to have to wait till 6am for some mad children's programme on ch4 - the zoobs or something.

Rocks slightly when I remember those days Wink

Trigglesx · 20/07/2013 08:17

3yo DS and 6yo DS wake up around 5am every single morning. Sometimes 6yo wakes up much earlier. I just get up when they wake up. They've always been very early risers, so I am used to it.

ophelia275 · 20/07/2013 08:58

We are the same. Don't worry, we can't all be earth mothers and the fact that you even let your child watch tv would have some of the holier than thou mamas in a state of apoplexy.

Maryann1975 · 20/07/2013 09:51

I am a shockingly bad mother. Kids were awake by 6am and we are all still lounging in bed. We have had the iPad out (which I have now stolen back) and have exhausted watching the tv. Mine are 7,5 and 2, so are quite happy playing by themselves now, but upstairs is trashed. I don't mind tidying up though, they let me stay in bed (albeit not asleep) until now.

Top tip, when you go to bed, take some kind of breakfast up with you, ie, covered bowl of dry cereal, brioche, etc. keeps them quiet for a bit longer and you don't feel guilty when they start moaning they are hungry.

LadyMilfordHaven · 20/07/2013 11:50

Christ alive. Just get up you lazy fuckers. It lasts for 4 years till they can use the remote

catgirl1976 · 20/07/2013 11:52

Mmmmmm working ft and getting up at 4:30am every day including weekends and looking after a demanding toddler isn't in my definition of "lazy", but hey ho

LadyMilfordHaven · 20/07/2013 11:54

Go to bed earlier. It passes so quickly. Honest

SpottyTeacakes · 20/07/2013 11:56

Oh catgirl I'm definitely a lazy fucker not wanting to get up at 5am when I have a three year old and seven month old to look after and a genetic disorder which causes extreme fatigue Hmm just to prove my laziness I joined ds for a two hour nap this morning Grin

pommedechocolat · 20/07/2013 11:57

'your heart isn't in it'.

Oh fgs.

What a load of absolute drivel.

About mummies competing with each other and not about raising children.

pommedechocolat · 20/07/2013 11:58

maryann - loving that idea!!

LJL69 · 20/07/2013 11:59

I had friends of the knit your own mince type that made me feel guilty for using the tv to allow me to get some chores done....so I switched on the subtitles function and convinced myself that I was supporting DD learning to read.

Yamyoid · 20/07/2013 12:00

Before dd came along to spoil things, I used to give ds a bowl of dry Cheerios with a cup of milk while watching cbeebies in my bed.
I'm looking forward to a couple of years time when he can put the tv on for her downstairs and get her breakfast Grin
