My DC are 7 and 3 and i never feel the need to do the above. I see other parents shouting at their school age children and cannot understand why you would do that. They understand what you mean without any shouting. I have shouted and smacked in the past though, but as the DC get older I just do't get it

I think it's true that shouting at the kids is undesirable and often counter-productive, but I also think that few parents actually use 'shouting' as a deliberate parenting strategy! It is the frustration that erupts when your DCs are still not doing what they're supposed to after you've asked them nicely 3 times!
