To canvas or not to canvas (wedding picture!)

wonderingifiam2013 · 16/07/2013 13:00

I'm not into loads of pictures around the house - nothing against people who do, it's just not me

DH is of the same mind-set - we have a few of our DC but that's it really

Since we got married a few years ago, I've been thinking about getting our favourite wedding photo put on canvas and hung in an alcove in the living room

I'm thinking of getting it as a surprise but I'm not sure if DH will cringe at this ... or if he'll like it

Thinking a max of 20" wide

So, mumsnet jury ... is it cheesy or should I just go for it?

Nooooooo!

Why not get a large print of it, say A4 size, and buy a lovely (standing) frame for it? Or have a larger print framed and hung?

EvieanneVolvic · 16/07/2013 13:04

I say this in all love: how the feck do we know whether your DH will like it or not???

If YOU will like it, go for it. If he really objects you could do something really radical like take it down!

efffy · 16/07/2013 13:05

A bit cheesy, I wouldn't.

NoComet · 16/07/2013 13:17

Depends on the style of the room and how in your face the location is.

Canvas would look right in my white walled, white and pine coloured dinning room and totally wrong in my dark, more traditionally furnished living room.

Flat in the wall you see as you walk in a canvas jumping out would be cheesey, giving interest to an alcove or above a shelf it could work perfectly.

attheendoftheday · 17/07/2013 00:15

I think it's a bit cheesy.

Then again, I have lots of things in my house that others would consider to be bad taste (feature walls and a loo brush, to name a couple). I like them, so I don't care.

So do what makes you happy.

Whippetwarmer · 17/07/2013 00:25

I've only seen this once in someone's house. And I thought it was a bit cheesy. I second the nice print in a frame idea.

Montybojangles · 17/07/2013 06:57

Why do you care if we like the idea or not? It's your home, if you like it get it. If your DH Isn't so keen when he sees it you can move it to another room.

Leviticus · 17/07/2013 07:12

I don't like canvas prints so I wouldn't, sorry.

buttercrumble · 17/07/2013 07:18

Dont do it, our neighbours have a canvas of their wedding day above the fireplace. I always find it highly amusing when we walk by, it looks awful and is so cheesy Grin

PatsyAndEddy · 17/07/2013 07:21

I have one, about a4 size that hangs at the side if the fire place above the book case. Not in your face at all. Do what you want, canvas is one thing that people get strangely snobby about here

MackerelOfFact · 17/07/2013 07:24

Haha @ attheendoftheday 'liking' her loo brush. Grin Sorry, I just have this vision of you popping to your bathroom and admiring your loo brush.

Anyway. Big thumbs down to the canvas print photo. Naffola. By all means get one enlarged and framed, but 'canvas' (and they're invariably actually just plastic) is a bit outdated now IMO.

NewAtThisMalarky · 17/07/2013 07:25

Casually wonders if the last two posters are neighbours ..

NewAtThisMalarky · 17/07/2013 07:32

I mean the two posters just before mackerel..

Umlauf · 17/07/2013 07:40

No, for me its with twigs and pebbly shite! Get it printed on weathered stone instead and prop it up next to a fireplace. We got ours printed by Coulson Macleod (they normally do text) and its lurvely.

ComposHat · 17/07/2013 09:32

epitome of naff. one step removed from his and hers sun strip on the marital hatchback.

attheendoftheday · 17/07/2013 18:25

Blush Mackerel

superbagpuss · 17/07/2013 18:47

I have a wedding one, one of my family, one of my boys and a montage picture in a frame

I didn't know it was cheesy Blush

I just like having happy pictures on my wall and they make me smile looking at them

thispunderfullife · 17/07/2013 23:06

I think if you like it go for it. But what's bad taste about a loo brush, am I missing something?!

attheendoftheday · 17/07/2013 23:56

A lot of people on mn think loo brushes are unhygienic and don't have them, apparently.

thispunderfullife · 18/07/2013 08:09

But what do they use for day to day er cleaning?? Sorry for thread hijacking

Canidae · 18/07/2013 12:15

I like canvas prints Grin

quesadilla · 18/07/2013 12:21

I personally think canvas photos are naff as fuck. Not bothered about the fact its a wedding picture, but I'd just have the photo as a print.

But if you and your DH like it screw what anyone else thinks and get it. I like plenty of things which are naff and I don't give a toss if anyone else likes them.

MrsBucketxx · 18/07/2013 12:25

I have a small wedding pic but I'm not a fan of the lg ones its a bit naff.

nancerama · 18/07/2013 12:27

In my head, Canvas is for paint and paper is for photos.

What anyone chooses to do in their own home is up to them though. It works for some styles of house and some styles of photography.

squoosh · 18/07/2013 12:31

I wouldn't thank you for this if I was your DH, in fact I'd be sorting out the divorce pronto all the while ranting 'How could I have married someone who doesn't know that I really hate photos blown up onto a canvas'.

I think it's very Posh and Becks circa 1998.

But if you like it you should go for it obviously.
