To think that mowing your lawn directly outside a three year old's bedroom window at 730 is rather thoughtless?

Just that really.

Neighbours know how old our DD is. They know we are home. So they should probably have an inkling that it's bedtime....

What do you think? I am thinking its quite selfish to make a racket of an evening, particularly as there will be windows open.

It's not a big actual problem, as it happens- I'm just curious to know what the mumsnet hive mind thinks.

I worked nights for three years I had to put up with people mowing lawns talking loudly once even some body shouted in my bedroom window [I lived in a downstairs flat at the time it was hot my window was open ] obviously I could nt expect people not to go about there daily buisness just because I worked nights and I slept during the day yab abit u I,m afraid

NoComet · 09/07/2013 20:00

My DDs would have been racing about enjoying the sunshine and I would have been too.

Bed time has never been before 8 and more like 9 on a night like this.

No point in trying to get DD1 to sleep in her baking south facing room any earlier.

ImNotBloody14 · 09/07/2013 20:01

lots of people who work full time also have dcs that they don't want to have to chase away from the lawnmower on Saturdays. it is probably safer and a bit less stressful to do it in the evening when their dc are in bed. my dad used to do it when we were in bed- we watched him from the window and ducked down when he looked up. Grin

Nicknamegrief · 09/07/2013 20:01

I have a three year old and would think nothing of mowing the lawn at that time.

We have had a euro fighter hovering above our house and my 3yo then managed to nap ... I on the other hand couldn't even think despite triple glazing.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 09/07/2013 20:01

YABU. AS others have said, after 8 on a week night I'd expect people to be reasonably quiet, but 7.30 is fine imo. Perfect time actually, as it's cooling down.

BrianButterfield · 09/07/2013 20:02

If I didn't have a toddler to put to bed I'd have no idea it was 8 o'clock right now - it's blazing sunshine and boiling hot and it's not like evening at all.

icklemssunshine1 · 09/07/2013 20:10

DH mows our lawn after DD (2) goes to bed - she sleeps through anything! We both work so the only free time we get is after 7 - same for most of working population I'm guessing!

GameSetAndMatch · 09/07/2013 20:11

Im with you,. OP, they could mow ona weekend.

Id have a friendly chat with them though. best times for being fair to all would be between 9-7 imo, but im sure therll be anwers to THAT!

mind you, mine mows at 7am on a saturday or sunday, and a few neighbours have asked him to be a bit more accomodating.

his response? one way street sign with finger and a cursory customary F O*.

cant win either way. Sad

VitoCorleone · 09/07/2013 20:12

YABU. Some people cant stand the heat so do this stuff in the evening.

Some people work and have no choice but to do it in the evening.

Some people dont have kids so would have no idea that 7:30pm is late and could disturb next doors kids.

allnewtaketwo · 09/07/2013 20:13

YABU, most people who work only have evenings spare to do chores like mowing the lawn

Mondayschild78 · 09/07/2013 20:14

My retired neighbour who is pretty much always home and in the garden has mowed their lawn regularly at 7.30 (sometimes later) regardless of the weather since we moved in two years ago. I used to find it annoying when I was sleep deprived and DS (now 20 months) would get disturbed by it so I can understand where you are coming from. It is their house and garden though and in the scheme of things it's not that late. Therefore although it is irritating they are not being unreasonable in choosing to do this. Therefore I think YABU

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 09/07/2013 20:16

I know how annoyed you must be, but I don't think you can expect people who are long past parenting to know this is too late. And it's too late for you (and me, as it happens - when mine were young), but no means universal

Shitsinger · 09/07/2013 20:16

Yabu
The world doesn't stop because your DC go to bed at 7.30.
If they are tired they usually sleep through most things.

vix206 · 09/07/2013 20:16

Well OP if YABU then I am too because I would find that very annoying as well. Wink

HaroldLloyd · 09/07/2013 20:17

YABU I think. It's the only time some people get to do it.

yabyum · 09/07/2013 20:17

I imagine most people who work have at least some time off work during the daytime hours...

No, actually. Those of us who work full time normally have fuck all time during daylight hours to do anything at all that's not work.

That's why it's called 'full time'. With commuting, I'm away from my home for at least 12 hours per day, 5 days per week and I'm not at all unusual.

YABU.

HandMini · 09/07/2013 20:18

YABU.

You should try living in our busy noisy London terraced street!

The gentle purr of a lawn mower at 7.30pm would be positive music to my ears and a lullaby to my toddler and baby compared with 5am crashing dustbins, 3am drunks screaming at other, 10pm kids two gardens down on the trampoline squealing, half the neighbours BBQing for the last week, dogs barking, ice cream vans tinkling etc etc etc

Oh, and if your three year old has woken up, tell him or her to watch the lawn mowing. It'll be soporific / hypnotic for them!

MaureenMLove · 09/07/2013 20:19

If I could be arsed to get the lawn mower out at 7.30pm I would, but I can't! I work all day too and I do indeed have the weekend off. But it is just that, a weekend off. Mowing the lawn is not something I want to waste this beautiful weather on!

There's always going to be someone to piss off whenever you cut the grass.

Nope, I think mowing the grass at that sort of time is fine.
But then I think kids playing in the garden at 8am at the weekend is fine. Neither time is particularly antisocial, even if it doesn't fit with your preferences.
We mow the lawn, underneath the 2 and 4 yr olds windows after they have gone to bed - trying to mow with "helpers" isn't easy at the weekends.

YABU.

PlainOldVanilla · 09/07/2013 20:21

My DD is 9m and my neighbours cut their grass at 8:30 right by her bedroom window. I was slightly raging Angry

noblegiraffe · 09/07/2013 20:22

It wouldn't even occur to me that it might be a problem. And I have a 3 year old!
