To close the DC window at night?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 09/07/2013 13:53

Dh thinks I am being ridiculous. I can't relax if the bedroom window is open when I go to sleep. I imagine someone climbing up onto the front door porch and in through their open window.

DH says he'd wake up and why would anyone do it anyhow? But I can't relax! AIBU? I know its hot....should I listen to DH and let the kids breathe at night or should I close the window and feel safe?

I would say that if someone's cased your house, worked out how to get to their window and gone to effort of climbing up, then they fully intend on sneaking in and won't let a shut window stop them.

FryOneFatManic · 09/07/2013 13:56

How big is the window? We have those small inset panes in our windows that we open at night. DS is so hot already when he's asleep that in this weather he'd struggle to sleep at all with the window closed.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 09/07/2013 13:56

yes, yes...there is that. DH says if they want to get in THAT much then they'll break the patio doors. I am weirdly fearful of this kind of thing...

Fry It is biggish...half of the window opens. I could get through it and I am a 5.6 size 14 woman with a big bottom

I don't think I could sleep if the windows were shut at night. It must be so hot. Mind you I sleep with the window open in winter! Is your house in a high crime area? That could sway my opinion.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 09/07/2013 13:59

dexter I have OUT window open...as I know if someone came in, I'd eat them alive before they'd fairly got both legs through. Grin I also have it open in winter. It's just the DDs are at the front of the house!

No. The area is not high in crime.

OUR not OUT

I couldn't sleep with the windows closed in this weather, it's too hot. Our windows are wide open the entire time in this heat, it's far too hot otherwise. Leave them open and let them sleep!

angeltattoo · 09/07/2013 14:03

DH had our bedroom window open last night. I was worried about a fox getting at my PFB. He adjusted in so that said fox ' would need a front door key' Grin but some air got in.

Hadn't thought about burgulars, and it's a ground floor flat probably less likely to eat our DD though

flatpackhamster · 09/07/2013 14:03

Put a bowl of ice cubes on a shelf/dresser in their room half an hour before bed time. As they melt they'll (due to the Magic Of Science!) create a cool breeze which will take the edge off the heat in the room.

dexter73 · 09/07/2013 14:03

I'd leave it open then. I would think burglars are more likely to come in at the back of a house than scale up the front of your house.

Hasitfallendownagain · 09/07/2013 14:05

We have windows that can open just a narrow amount at the top. I keep them open all year round, but I'm nervous of having the main window fully open at night, because I'm worried my DC might try to climb out.

Yes, I am paranoid, but once you have thought of a possibility, it's hard to forget it again Grin.

In hot weather, I have windows wide open when the sun is on the opposite side of the house, then shut the blinds once the sun is on that side, to try to keep the room cool. Then window open a couple of inches at the top once they go to bed.

ItsQuiteHardtocomeupwithaname · 09/07/2013 14:09

I leave ds window on the widest catch and have the vents open. But I would never leave it wide open as the head of his bed is next to the window so he could easily lean and fall out. He has a fan, just been sleeping in his nappy and light muslin blanket.

ItsQuiteHardtocomeupwithaname · 09/07/2013 14:13

Just to add we leave our window open as he doesn't climb, the bathroom and the window by the stairs , so there is a bit of a breeze, then if its really stuffy I leave ds door open.

saintava · 09/07/2013 14:14

We only have big opening windows, and as my 3 year old is a climber and can get to things I didn't think she'd ever reach, I just feel that I can't take the risk and leave the window open. We've bought various locks etc but they don't work on our windows. Only option is to replace the double glazing.

What I do now is keep the windows open all day when we're in, with the curtains shut (the sun shines in to the bedrooms from before lunch for the rest of the day) then put them to bed in just pants or a t-shirt with a sheet, not a quilt. They're bedroom door is also open so some air can circulate as windows are open in bathroom/toilet room which they can't get to.

BackforGood · 09/07/2013 14:28

I prefer them closed as I am really petrified of wasps, and the idea of waking up to a buzzing noise is FAR more horrific than being slightly warmer than having them closed. That said, our bedrooms don't really get that hot / stuffy at night.

Pigsmummy · 09/07/2013 14:29

I want to buy a screen for DD's bedroom window as otherwise the cat, mine and neighbours will climb in her room so also can't leave the window open.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 09/07/2013 14:33

Ds is in our room as with his new new bed he could easily climb out his window. It's too hot for him to sleep in there in this weather. I'm just waiting for the new inserts to arrive that mean we can only open it a bit so he can't fit through it. Have you thought about something like that?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 09/07/2013 19:33

You've reminded me that DD2 is a bit of a risk take and she has made me nervous in the past looking out of open upstairs windows. Gah! Another fear!

Get a window restrictor. Not expensive and great peace of mind. Our windows have them and they're brilliant.

bigbluebus · 09/07/2013 19:46

Don't know how old your DC are OP but if small, I would be more concerned about them getting out than someone else climbing in.

When my DC were small, we had window catches fitted to the windows so that the windows could be opened partially to let air in, but not far enough for a child to fall out. That would also mean anyone trying to open them from outside would only have a small gap to work through and would need a tool to reach in - meaning they probably wouldn't bother.

bigbluebus · 09/07/2013 19:49

Just done a quick 'google' and Amazon have loads of locks/restrictors for windows. Plenty of other companies have similar products too.

trackies · 09/07/2013 19:57

ok this will prob make it worse but burglars were caught climbing onto a neighbours porch trying to access upper windows. We have had alot of burglary probs on our street. I think they were checking to see if the upper windows were unlocked. So i leave the kids windows open until about 11pm, then we can lock them, but our windows have a setting whereby small gap can be left. DH and I can be very heavy sleepers so i dont trust us to wake up if there was an intruder.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 09/07/2013 21:23

You see! I KNEW it could happen. Burglars come in two flavours...the professional who would never bother with our house as it's obviously not owned by rich people and the desperate who will do anything for twenty quid.

OP posts:
iamadoozermum · 09/07/2013 21:39

I'm with you Neo. I absolutely can't sleep if the DC's windows are open or the bathroom window as it is above the kitchen extension. I have nightmares about being home invaded. In a previous life I read a report which said that 50% of burglaries take place when someone is in the house! I'm also worried about the DCs going out of the window. But our windows have a restricted opening facility so I have let DH put the windows on that setting in this weather, this year, for the first time Smile
