You need to defiantly go to A&E.
Did he defiantly do that?
Tomorrow I will defiantly phone them.

I wand to defiantly punch these people. Definitely.

"Doggy-Dog World" are part of the lyrics of a rap song by Snoop Dogg, so I hear.....Smile

One fb friend uses random text speak words on her status messages. It just makes her look like she can't spell when I assume she can.

She writes rele instead of really every time and it drives me batty

1Veryhungrycaterpillar · 05/07/2013 10:07

My Dds TA can't spell and that aggravates me as I think she should be able to

WilsonFrickett · 05/07/2013 10:10

Skinny, I had to hide an old school-friend for that reason - same age, same education, using gud for good, laik for like - can't deal with the red mists in the morning.

Dorris83 · 05/07/2013 10:13

Thanks for clarifying that wilson .

Mistakes like that make me think that the person doesn't care enough about the job to bother checking their grammar, but perhaps they just don't know it is incorrect in the first place?!

I'm not sure which is worse...

WilsonFrickett · 05/07/2013 10:16

Tbf, often very skilled writers make howling mistakes. Autocorrect is not always our friend either. That's why you should always get someone else to proof important docs like CVs.

GrimmaTheNome · 05/07/2013 10:17

Break instead of brake - in a motoring column in a national newspaper. Ok, so it was the Guardian but even so...

GrimmaTheNome · 05/07/2013 10:21

I don't understand why anyone leaves autocorrect on iPhones enabled. I think it's been deliberately designed to make ridiculous 'corrections' by some smartarse Californian kid. The autocorrections I get in Outlook are rarely foolish - sometimes irritating as I work for an American company and it will Anglicise terms, but I can't blame it for that.

Officershitty · 05/07/2013 10:23

there instead of their. EEEEEEEEEEKK!!

OryxCrake · 05/07/2013 10:30

I agree with whoever said upthread that the language on a site like this is colloquial and fast-moving, so there will be errors. Plus, spelling and grammar are not strong points for lots of people for whatever reason and that doesn't affect the validity of what's being said.

There is one I really struggle with, though, which is when people mix up discreet and discrete. Discreet means unobtrusive, careful, prudent; discrete means separate. I think it winds me up because I used to work with someone who banged on and on about how her use of English was better than everyone else's in the office but always used these the wrong way round.

I do like the 'Muphry's Law' link Grin

the only one that makes me really stabby and Angry is...

discusting/disgusting

noticed someone upthread has done it and not sure if its deliberate or not Confused

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 05/07/2013 10:46

My old teacher used to say (about Definitely) when in doubt leave the A out, bring in the I, finish with E,L,Y.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 05/07/2013 11:07

here here...AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

where? where???

JackieTheFart · 05/07/2013 11:34

It doesn't bother me on here so much, but it does when it is less of a conversation.

I have to write letters to customers as part of my job, I also proof read for others. So many people can spell ok (or use spellcheck) but their use of grammar is appalling. Yourself and myself used when it should be me or you is particularly annoying.

Also Buzzardbird, I would say infantry and inventory almost the same, just with a v or f in it. How would you say it? Confused

mistlethrush · 05/07/2013 11:36

I give you 'imbetween'

WilsonFrickett · 05/07/2013 11:43

Oh myself and yourself . Usually the thin end of a wedge of corporate speak.

If yourself could kindly telephone my office to make an appointment at a date and time that is convenient to yourself and myself to discuss the matter and find a mutually beneficial solution.

Or even come and see me and we'll sort it out.

Fakebook · 05/07/2013 12:01

Barstard annoys me.

Cue for queue is annoying too.

Good old pacific for specific pisses me off. I had a colleague who used to say that all the time. Not the brightest crayon in the box, mind you.

Also, marinade and marinate. You make the marinade and marinate the chicken. Not marinade the chicken.

bemybebe · 05/07/2013 13:44

I cannot stand when people say 'ekcetera'. Blush

TheCutOfYourJib · 05/07/2013 13:50

You have spelling mistakes on two out of three posts.
So maybe other people's spelling mistakes are just typos?

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/07/2013 14:55

From upthread, "driving license" and "in my defense" are correct in American English.

Quangle · 05/07/2013 14:57

You shouldn't be allowed to put Caesar salad on the menu unless you know how to spell it.

Tee2072 · 05/07/2013 15:04

Caesar or salad?
