A school run mum once proudly declared that her freezer compartment was empty. Ie we only have fresh food.
Aibu to think that actually some frozen food is better than fresh. Ie veg.

I suppose it's because when she hears 'frozen food' she hears 'Findus Crispy Pancakes' and the like.

Not batch cooked healthy meals, frozen fruit for smoothies, frozen veg for an easy portion or whatever.

My freezer is full, but there's no crap in there!

Fishfingers are not crap. And potato waffles are just potato.

Whats the problem?

am glad I'm not the only one that takes great delight in having a freezer full of goodies - bargain meat reductions are my friend and I feel very domestically goddessy like someone else comments about the little mini tubs of stuff for dd..

Mad woman.. I yearn for a bigger freezer.

When you're talking about frozen veg, do you mean veg you buy fresh and freeze yourself or frozen veg in packets that you can buy in the supermarket?

If it's the latter, I agree with the poster who said they found it mushy - I would never choose to have frozen veg (even peas). But that's just my preference, I like veg al dente, but if anyone else likes it, it's not my place to judge.

If it's the former, this could revolutionise my shopping/cooking habits!! Do you find it gets the slightly mushy texture you would get with frozen veg?

She sounds like a twat.
I made sure I got a 50/50 fridge freezer when I got my kitchen and would have a bigger freezer than fridge if I could have found one.
My mum always told me to keep the freezer full as it is more economical.
I am very envious of people who have chest freezers and could easily fill one.

Frozen, good quality and healthy food is great. Crappy frozen turkey twizzlers and that sort of thing are not so great.
My freezer is full to the brim, I buy meat and veg when it is reduced and freeze it, batch cook soups and chilli and that sort of thing.

The bottom draw is full of emergency food, stuff that will make a meal even if we have nothing else in and only have 20 minutes, that's where I hide the fish fingers and potato waffles Grin

I do much the same as you, VanellopePitstop, even down to the Bottom Drawer of Shame. Although actually I guess there's not much wrong with fish fingers - it's still fish, isn't it?

Freezing stuff is just so handy - I love my freezer!

She is bu to not use her freezer at all. What a waste! Mine is constantly packed, makes life much easier.

IMO though, yabu to say frozen veg is 'better'. Except for peas and corn on the cob, I find frozen veg mushy and tasteless. I can't see how it's possible for it to have more nutrients than fresh steamed veg.

No, nothing wrong with the fish fingers and waffles, they are a great quick meal that I know the DC will eat. But that said, I don't want them to have that every night, though they might disagree!

Also always have an emergency loaf of sliced bread and some milk, then I replace if I end up having to use my emergency stash.

How the hell does she survive? Shock I always have a stash of stock, home made soups, tomato sauces and I freeze left overs. And no ice cream????!!!! My kids look forward to a cooked pudding with custard or ice cream weekend. They'd be gutted if the freezer went Wink

Some veg works better frozen. For eg in my experience frozen peas and sweetcorn are fine; I always have a bag of each in my freezer and a couple of handfuls means 2 of your five a day, without any effort. I also give a little cup of them still frozen to my DS to munch on if he's hungry between meals; poor blighter thinks it's a treat. Broccoli and cauliflower not so much.

My frozen frozen veg is never mushy well sometimes brocolli is but I would waste veg if I bought it all fresh it is easy to portion if it is frozen if it is mushy you are cooking it to long ime

If you're willing to shop every few days for fresh stuff then fair enough I suppose.

I prefer to get it delivered once a week and stick stuff in the freezer! Better financially and less waste

Even if you shop every few days, veggies can be less than fresh depending on where you go. For eg Asda veg always seems to be on the turn after a day or so, ditto the things I get cheap from the market. Veg that is frozen has definitely spent a lot less time sitting around/in transit than the veg that you get in shops and the quality control is thorough as well.

Maybe she knows lots of people like my sister who keeps milk, butter and jam only in her fridge and thinks the fresh food compartments and other shelves are a waste of space.

She is always on the lookout for a tiny fridge and huge freezer combo because she does fill it with crispy pancakes etc rather than veg and home-cooked meal portions. Or if you're lazy like me, sandwiches Blush

Agree with cutofyourjib, she sounds like a twat. I bet she takes her kids to McDonalds weekly as well.

Good for her if she has time to shop every other day or is super organised enough plan exactly what she needs for a week, buy it all and not forget anything, source vegetables with long enough shelf lives etc then fair enough!

But just because something is frozen, doesnt mean its bad. Yes some things are better fresh taste/texture-wise, but whats the harm in freezing a bit of meat? Also, sometimes you just want what we call in our house 'kiddy dinner night'. Me and my husband have the occasional turkey drummers, waffles and spagetti hoops dinner and I enjoy it so much! And ive always got a frozen pizza and some oven chips in the freezer for when needs must.

Frozen spinach is a recent discovery. Cheaper, easier to store and prepare and more room in the fridge for cake!

Report
JRmumma · 03/07/2013 11:09

I wasnt sure about frozen spinach, is it any good? What do you use it in? Ive only ever seen it cooked by my MIL, and it looked like soup once she'd finished with it. Although most veg she boils up until it looks like it could be consumed through a straw!

Frozen spinach is fine as long as you don't want it 'wilted' - it comes in little blocks that you heat up with a tiny tiny bit of water. I use it to make a quick pasta sauce - heat the spinach up and then stir through a bit of soft cheese/blue cheese.

I blanch veg before freezing which means it isn't mushy, also means it is easy to freeze in portions.

Oh dear, I don't think I would be popular. I have three freezers, all stocked to the brim. Only one box of fishfingers though. We buy our meat in bulk from the butcher, and made a special trip to Tesco on Sunday to get half price salmon and the Pimms at £12 a bottle so that we can have fish every week for £1.10 per portion.

I LOVE my freezers....may have to have another shed to house another one though!
