To not have corrected teacher?

I sat in a KS1 Geography lesson today.
We were looking at the country Spain.
Teacher told the children that never snowed there and that the only way to get there was to fly.
What about the Pyrenees?

Have you heard of a ferry?
Hmm

Confused

That's really odd.

waikikamookau · 01/07/2013 17:54

hmm, I took a ferry to spain.
but of course,
you are not a child, you are helping in the class, not being a smart arse no doubt Smile

Blissx · 01/07/2013 17:54

You were right not to correct them in front of the kids, but you could have mentioned it to them after the lesson so that they do not make the same mistake again.

Ilovesunflowers · 01/07/2013 17:54

That's pretty poor. The teacher should have done a bit of research. I would have mentioned it after the lesson.

Iheartcustardcreams · 01/07/2013 17:54

Will you not mention it when you give feedback on the observation? If she isn't told she can't correct what she has said.

waikikamookau · 01/07/2013 17:55

it is KS1, so what age group?

Indith · 01/07/2013 17:56

never mind the mountains for snow I've been in Madrid when it has snowed.

but yes you were right to not undermine the teacher in front if the children.

Solari · 01/07/2013 17:56

Agree with Blissx, I'd find a way to gently/kindly bring it to her attention, but privately, not in front of others.

blueemerald · 01/07/2013 17:58

I had to tell a primary school teacher that a dolphin was not a fish (She gave me a pitying look, as if I was stupid) and a secondary science teacher that the Earth rotated every 24 hours not every 12 hours during my years as a TA.

I'm now a teacher (just) and would thank any TA/observer who corrected me after the lesson.

Snowyelephantshavewrinkles · 01/07/2013 17:59

I did point out to my DS's kindergarten teacher (teacher NOT assistant) that Africa doesn't have a capital Hmm. Grin

I tried really hard not to sound patronising but probably failed Confused

I also pointed out to his grade 1 teacher that there were no penguins in the Arctic and that there were penguins in Africa. She had 'corrected' my DS's homework in red pen. Angry I couldn't let that go Grin

My DH was a French translator, he had to correct the french teachers appalling French.

waikikamookau · 01/07/2013 18:01

if they are 5 to 7 years in that case I don't think that age needs to know about the possibility going by ferry. tbh. I don't spose the lesson was about transport!

I had to sit there and not say anything when a y5 teacher o,d the class that ww2 lasted 7 years from 1938 to 1947 then Winston Churchill stayed prime minister for about 10 years after that.... Hmmm... Was on placement and had to do follow up lesson! That was interesting!!!

JohnnyUtah · 01/07/2013 18:09

Africa - you mean no capital city, not no capital letter, right?

Had to read it three times!

ICantRememberWhatSheSaid · 01/07/2013 18:24

I meant Africa doesn't have a capital city. Grin

at least it didn't when I last checked Hmm

tabulahrasa · 01/07/2013 18:28

But you don't even need to get a ferry, there are roads and train lines going into France...

lottiegarbanzo · 01/07/2013 18:31

Shall I send some pictures of our trip by train to snowy Spanish mountains?

one of my Reception class corrected my TA who was telling them all that the sun was a planet. I don't think the TA believed her though!

mikkii · 01/07/2013 18:48

My DS would have corrected the teacher about only flying to Spain as one year he caught chickenpox when we were going to a wedding, being unable to fly we used the channel tunnel and drove. It is one of his favourite stories!

exoticfruits · 01/07/2013 18:58

I don't think you should correct her at the time, but I would definitely mention it privately afterwards.

JerseySpud · 01/07/2013 19:04

You can definatly go by ferry to Spain. My eldest is KS1 and i would hope she knows about ferries as its one of the only ways to get off this rock!
