To think DD will be ok for a party two days after having 2 teeth out?

Poor DD is abuot to turn 9...her teeth are overcrowded and she has just had an appointment through to get two of the back ones removed. They are going to do it at the dentist's surgery where we always go.

Trouble is...the appointment is booked in for two days before her birthday party!

DD is not the toughest kid..she's a bit of a moaner and seems to get very bothered by things like mouth ulcers or sore throats. AIBU to just go ahead with her party and hope she'll be ok?

I could attempt to rearrange the appointment but the party can't be changed.

I think it will be under sedation rather than full on knocked out.

I was back at school absolutely fine the day after getting 2 wisdom teeth out aged 16, and when I had 3 reluctant milk teeth out when I was about 11, so I would imagine she'll be fine. I suspect the excitement about the party will help speed her recovery too :)

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 29/06/2013 13:42

I thought it might be ok Twinkly..I had my wisdom teeth out not that long ago and I was fine the next day. She's a bit of a moaner.....hopefully she will forget because of the party!

She might feel a bit knocked about and sore and might not feel like eating as much (food in the holes where the teeth came from is never pleasant), but I'm sure she'll be fine :)

mrsjay · 29/06/2013 13:49

DD1 had this she was back at school the next day she was fine I think the party will put a stop at the moaning

MerryOnMerlot · 29/06/2013 13:53

She'll be fine.

MaureenMLove · 29/06/2013 13:56

Dd was also 9 when she had 4 out fit a similar reason. She had them out at Guys under general. She was fine within a couple of hours! in fact, we got the train up to town and insisted on stopping at the supermarket on the way home because she was starving hungry!

mrsjay · 29/06/2013 13:59

Dd also got her out in hospital and once she came round she was fine

marriedinwhiteagain · 29/06/2013 14:28

my dd hd two out under general when she was 5ish. Right as ninepence within 15 minutes of coming round.

Idocrazythings · 29/06/2013 14:33

Mines recently had some out and was fine, but when I had one wisdom out I was not fine (difficult extraction). Can nine year olds get big twisted roots- I'd guess not but who knows? That could make all the difference in recovery. Can you check with the orthodontist if they think it will be a straightforward extraction, from looking at X-rays?

SybilRamkin · 29/06/2013 14:56

She'll be fine, I had 8 teeth out as a kid and was never bothered beyond a slight twinge the next day. I recently had all four wisdom teeth out under sedation and was back at work the next day with nothing more than a bit of a chipmunk face - no ill effects from the sedation.

SybilRamkin · 29/06/2013 14:59

Oops, just read Ido's post - my wisdom teeth extraction was super-straightforward with no twisting or broken teeth which is why it was problem free, I know others who've had a horrible time of it - poor you Flowers

But what I meant was that the sedation doesn't normally have after-effects other than sleepiness on the same day and an inability to drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hrs (but am assuming OP's 9-y-o DD won't be doing either!).

Mhw02 · 29/06/2013 15:25

She'll be fine. I had a wisdom tooth out and sang in a big choral concert two days later!

sarahtigh · 29/06/2013 15:28

most children getting teeth out for orthodontic reasons have simple extractions as mostly the roots are not fully formed so easier to take a tooth out I reckon it would take me less than 1 minute per tooth, normally I would expect a child having two extractions to go straight back to school with the proviso of no sports/ games/ PE as activity can dislodge the bloodclot and start bleeding again

however if ashe is having sedation rather than local anaesthetic she needs to go straight home and an adult be with her all the time until next day

Idocrazythings · 29/06/2013 15:36

You've done well Sybil 8 as a child and then four wisdom! I had four out for overcrowding and they were fine (they did two one week; two the next) and I don't really remember it so must have been ok- I was about 14 I think; but that one wisdom. Awful. (Lucky the other three never grew!).

Dd had her two out under GA since I still have such bad memories and I didn't was her to end up with a fear of the dentist as she is still quite young. She's completely fine.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 29/06/2013 15:46

thank you to all...Sarah that's great to hear from a dentist!

that obviously does not mean the whole procedure from the injection to going going numb bit but from placing forceps on tooth to it lying on the side on average for straightforward extraction is less than a minute often 30 seconds

sarahtigh · 29/06/2013 17:44

wisdom teeth are a different ball game

wonderingsoul · 29/06/2013 18:06

my eldest had a tooth out at 6 with just injection in the gum we was told that they dont put em under no more.

he was fine, having said that iv had a few out whilst put out (30 minutes op) and it really affected me for days, as in i fell weak and fuzzy. and could walk far. :/

i would say she'll prob be fine, a party to take her mind out.

sarahtigh · 29/06/2013 20:36

the general rule is unless SN or other medical/ physical problems GA is not given for dental treatment on children older than 4-5 years, most just have local injections some that are more nervous are given sedation then local anaesthetic but general is rare unless a lot of treatment needed an sedation is not feasible for medical, social or educational reasons

ArthurCucumber · 29/06/2013 20:44

My dd2 (11 and sounding very similar to yours in lack of toughness) had 2 teeth out for the same reason about a month ago. Injection but no sedation. She wasn't at her best that evening, and still a bit tender the next day but was back to normal the day after that :)

wigglesrock · 29/06/2013 20:51

We thought my 8 year old might have needed a tooth out last month. Our dentist told us it would be quick due to it being a milk tooth and she would be grand to go back to school. As it happens she didn't have to get the tooth out but I think your dd should be fine for her party Smile

HappySeven · 29/06/2013 21:01

I'd back Sarah's version up as someone who had teeth out for overcrowding. I always had 2 removed, a new plate fitted and straight into school. No problems. I reckon she'll probably take her lead from you so if you look like that's normal she'll probably think it is too.

bruffin · 29/06/2013 22:14

DD 15 had 3 teeth out a few weeks back and she was fine the next day, but she is having an impacted tooth removed soon under GA and i suspect that will take longer to get over.

frogspoon · 29/06/2013 23:15

For normal back teeth (molars) it's normally straightforward procedure- I had this done twice, had 4 molars out in total due to overcrowding.

They don't even normally sedate, just lots of anaesthetic (I think I had 5 injections each time). It doesn't normally hurt when the anaesthetic wears off, at worst it's a dull ache.

Biggest risks are getting food in the holes, which could cause infection, and the clot getting opened causing excess bleeding.
