Everytime someone compliments something I have (this is rare) like clothes or shoes etc I can't just say thank you

I'm all '£3.50 primani special'

Or '9.50 in the market'

Why?! They dobt need to know! I just can't stop myself. Is it a British thing? Does anyone else do this?

DrDumbass · 24/06/2013 20:08

I do it all the time. Today at work "nice dress" "thanks got it for a fiver on ebay"

peggotty · 24/06/2013 20:09

Haha! Yes I know exactly what you mean and I do it too!! I don't know why either - is it slight embarrassment maybe? Love of a bargain? It's supposed to be a sign of good self esteem to just graciously accept compliments, maybe we should practice that more?

MrsBucketxx · 24/06/2013 20:09

me too Blush

WinnieFosterTether · 24/06/2013 20:09

I do this all the time Blush I have no idea why.

HeadFairy · 24/06/2013 20:10

Because you're proud of the fact that not only have you got something someone else find's attractive, but also that it came at a bargain price :o

melonribena · 24/06/2013 20:10

I do this too. Or explain that I've had it for years or that it's nothing special. I can't just smile and say thanks!

OnTheNingNangNong · 24/06/2013 20:11

rainbowfeet · 24/06/2013 20:12

JustPanicking · 24/06/2013 20:13

Me too! Also have a tendency to say 'it's fake' when complimented on being tanned. Why??

MadBusLady · 24/06/2013 20:14

And me.

I'm in a right pickle when the thing actually cost a bob or two though.

BeetleBugBaby · 24/06/2013 20:14

Same! DD got a few compliments on the dress she wore to inlaws on Sunday and I was proudly announcing how much it was in the charity shop! :o

snooter · 24/06/2013 20:14

I do it too - somehow having to justify things - odd isn't it?

NotYoMomma · 24/06/2013 20:17

We were at a christening at the weekend and DD (16 months) got a lot of compliments on her dress. Dh was all 'thank you beam' and I had to butt in with '£8 Asda price!'

Ffs I need to quit it!

Mouthfulofquiz · 24/06/2013 20:18

I had this the other day:
Friend: 'Love your shoes! Are the from primark?'
Me: 'no, house of Fraser'
Cringe.

verytellytubby · 24/06/2013 20:19

I always do it too!

FirstStopCafe · 24/06/2013 20:19

I do this too!

MerylStrop · 24/06/2013 20:21

It's about not being able to take a compliment.

Stop it, it's ungracious.

ManifestoMT · 24/06/2013 20:22

I used to do this about my mumsnet hair do. But now I don't cos my mum went mad as she can't stand the thought of home cut hair.
In a what would the neighbours think I am too poor to go to a hairdresser ( I am and too mean)

So now when someone compliments my marvellous hair.
I grin say thank you and hug my self little

Smug bitch aren't I ;)

ifancyashandy · 24/06/2013 20:23

Practice. I've stopped doing it.

Just say 'Thank you, that's very kind - I like your (insert item / appearance)' and smile.

T'is easy.
