To want to dump a stray cat at rehoming centre (before I drown it)

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 04:43

First venture into Aibu and I'm fuming

In reality I won't drown said cat but take it to a rehome centre

Big Unneutered Tom cat appeared around 10 months ago, local couple started putting food down for it, however it keeps coming in our cat flap and stealing our cats food, I don't have that much of an issue with that, but I do have a problem with it spraying everywhere and the running total of £400 worth of vets bills where it's beaten my pitiful cat up.

I've looked into a microchip cat flap, but will need a new door first (old door ropey and won't take kindly to me removing cat flap) so will cost in total around £500, which I then think why should I fucking spend it. I'm on maternity leave and it's not a priority money wise see covering vets bills

I've tried locking my cat in, but then the stray just sprays all over cat flap and back door, so my house still stinks and it's getting I can't have the back door open because of the smell.

I've been up three times tonight, once to feed 13week old dd and twice to get rid of the stupid stray, which legs it.

Arounf 8 months ago I spoke to the couple feeding it, who said its a stray but they'll take it to be neutered, however they can't catch it, I offered to put my cat flap to in only and catch it, but then I got told it must be before 9am else vet can't take it etc etc Hmm

I'm just fed up, wibu to catch the damn thing and dump it at cats protection league, even if they say they can't have it. Reality is, if not its going to the vets to be put to sleep. I cannot be scrubbing floors and kitchen units and radiators at 4am every morning.

I'm fuming did I mention that. Grin

YANBU. You've been very patient so far!

MintyChops · 24/06/2013 04:48

I don't think you are being unreasonable, I'd want to do the same thing in your shoes. Hope you get back to sleep...

Kytti · 24/06/2013 04:50

I think you're being a bit OTT tbh. Can't you just lock your own cat flap and let your cat in through the door? I know it's not ideal, but really, don't leave an open door if you don't want it in! You've admitted your own catflap isn't up to ensuring only your cat can get in. Should you not have considered this when you had it installed?

You're not unreasonable to take it to the RSPCA / whatever, but it's clearly wrong to threaten to take it to be put down. The couple who are feeding it should take more responsibility too, or stop feeding it so it goes away.

MidniteScribbler · 24/06/2013 04:54

YANBU. I'm fed up with people who don't keep their animals confined to their property, and make no secret of the fact that roaming animals caught on my land will go to the pound. I let them know nicely first time, but after that,it's to the pound. I am responsible for keeping my animals safe, and that includes protecting them from other animals that are not kept confined to their own properties.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 05:22

Kytti- cat flap was left by previous homeowners, my cat was a stray that never left. The problem is even by locking my cat flap the stray male sprays all over the damn flap and door anyway.

I'm too much of animal lover to have it put down, but I'm so wound up I can't get back to sleep and I'm just fed up of it. I also know cats protection are full, so I will literally have to brazen it out and dump it on them will make a hefty donation in lieu of saved vets bills though and refuse to take it back with me.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 05:25

Any maybe as I'm sooooo sleep deprived, I'm not thinking that straight, but why I should I make my life more inconvenient with regards to locking cat flap because of a stray cat? Grrrrrr

OP posts:
MintyChops · 24/06/2013 05:32

Your catflap is for your cat, not some bloody annoying, spraying stray.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 05:53

Still fuming, no more sleep and dd will be up in thirty mins, I'm so annoyed I've ranted at my half asleep DH too. I think I maybe unhinged Grin or more likely this was the spray that broke the camels back.

I would get your husband to catch said cat and take it for a very long drive to a nice village at least 20 miles away. It can live there insteadGrinmy best friend's husband did this in a very similar situation.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 06:04

I did consider that too dirty, but think dropping it at cats protection league is far more sensible. Dh says squirting it with orange juice a few times will deter it if it does stay in the area as they hate the stuff and have to clean it off.

JellyMould · 24/06/2013 06:10

Dirtymistress that's a horrible and irresponsible thing to suggest. OP YANBU to consider passing the cat on to cats protection league though.

Dirtymistress · 24/06/2013 06:30

It's a stray adult cat jelly - I'm not suggesting anything horrible at all!!

catsdogsandbabies · 24/06/2013 06:30

Have you asked cats protection? They might trap him for you. Plus he may be too aggressive/ have various diseases so not be rehomed. You are doing him and all local cats including yours a favour by sorting this out. Careful catching him, is he friendly?

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 06:35

Nope not friendly at all, which is why the neighbours feeding him haven't got him in ten months. Plan is cat flap in only, big cage back of door, tasty tuna in cage, gardening gloves slam door shut. I'm going to ring cp first thing and see what they can do. I just can't cope with my house smelling all the time and not being able to have the door open because of the spray marks on it. My worry is my neighbours will be upset if I get him taken away but they've made no effort to catch him, they're just happy he's fed.

redcaryellowcar · 24/06/2013 06:36

I think cats protection would be best option. Perhaps call ahead to explain the problem as they will want to help. As for the smell its horrific, you can neutralise it by using surgical spirit, and many other sprays on the market but i found none were effective enough to stop the peeing just nice once cat rehomed to be able to get rid of smell!

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 06:36

My dd is now awake so definitely no more sleep for me, this may make me a teensy bit unreasonable. Grin

We have a spray that we put literally round the plant pots putside, on the door , it smells very strongly of lemon and pepper it seems to stop the neighbours cat from spraying everywhere. When it rains we re apply - however would not want your cat to be deterred from coming home .. maybe put on door / cat flap at night and try???

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 06:39

If neighbour has him nuetered will he stop spraying then? debates approaching neighbour first, or just taking him to cp

OP posts:
noitsachicken · 24/06/2013 06:44

Please call CP or another charity for help. They should be able to help trap and neuter him.
Please do not dump him on a rescue, especially if you know they are full. It is very inconsiderate and they will help you if you ask.

Neutering may help the spraying but it is not guaranteed.

maddening · 24/06/2013 06:46

So if the neighbours could catch him they would sort him? I would catch him as in your plan and give him to the neighbours - they can neutor him then keep him indoors and train him for the 3 weeks or whatever they advise. Speak to the neighbours and see if they are up with that?

Soditall · 24/06/2013 06:46

Were real animal lovers and have taken in a stray cat,but there is no way I could put up with that.I would have taken it to the cats protection as soon as it attacked my cat.

Even if the neighbors are upset that's not your problem.Your the one who keeps being put out,the one that's had they're poor cat attacked and the one that's had to pay out alot of money.

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2013 06:47

YY call CP. They can trap him and get him neutered and possibly rehomed. However CP at the moment are generally full to bursting with kittens and pregnant females.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 06:48

I know it's inconsiderate chicken, I'm just really and truly fed up, if they're full then the next option is vets to be put to sleep, why should I have the issues I'm having because someone was irresponsible a while ago.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2013 06:50

And it's entirely possible he is breeding the next generation of stray cats ratbag. I think you have had enough and I totally understand how you feel.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 06:51

Madd they won't keep him in at all as he's too wild Hmm I offered before to catch him, but then they gave me a list of suitable times for them as the vets will only take him in the morning. I suggested I catch him and they keep him in the cage until the following day, but was told that would be unfair so they'd have to release him. I suspect I have one shot at getting him. Also if they were that bothered surely they could have borrowed a trap. When I asked previously if he was theirs, I got a vague "well we feed him" response.
