To want to dump a stray cat at rehoming centre (before I drown it)

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 04:43

First venture into Aibu and I'm fuming

In reality I won't drown said cat but take it to a rehome centre

Big Unneutered Tom cat appeared around 10 months ago, local couple started putting food down for it, however it keeps coming in our cat flap and stealing our cats food, I don't have that much of an issue with that, but I do have a problem with it spraying everywhere and the running total of £400 worth of vets bills where it's beaten my pitiful cat up.

I've looked into a microchip cat flap, but will need a new door first (old door ropey and won't take kindly to me removing cat flap) so will cost in total around £500, which I then think why should I fucking spend it. I'm on maternity leave and it's not a priority money wise see covering vets bills

I've tried locking my cat in, but then the stray just sprays all over cat flap and back door, so my house still stinks and it's getting I can't have the back door open because of the smell.

I've been up three times tonight, once to feed 13week old dd and twice to get rid of the stupid stray, which legs it.

Arounf 8 months ago I spoke to the couple feeding it, who said its a stray but they'll take it to be neutered, however they can't catch it, I offered to put my cat flap to in only and catch it, but then I got told it must be before 9am else vet can't take it etc etc Hmm

I'm just fed up, wibu to catch the damn thing and dump it at cats protection league, even if they say they can't have it. Reality is, if not its going to the vets to be put to sleep. I cannot be scrubbing floors and kitchen units and radiators at 4am every morning.

I'm fuming did I mention that. Grin

You see I'd calmed down talking to you reasonable lot but now I'm downstairs with dd all I can smell is the damn cat pee and I'm back to throttling it.

Will pop round to neighbours with dd later (well neighbours four removed down the road) and chat nicely to them,to see how land lies. My cats such a wuss that when cat flap goes in the night, she nudges me awake to see off said beasts (except the Siamese, who's her cat friends who calls for her Grin mind you that doesn't spray so I don't mind)

I've now got a dd that needs attention, mumsnet ting to do and units to scrub again. Grrrrrrr

Get a re homing centre onto it, if its a stray it needs neutering and rehomeing. It is not your problem.

pigletmania · 24/06/2013 08:53

Yes tell neighbours not to feed the cat and please call The Cats Protection League

xylem8 · 24/06/2013 09:03

midnite how do you suggest owners keep cats confined to their land?

Chesntoots · 24/06/2013 09:12

I came home early from work yesterday with a cracking migraine to a house that smelled of piss. I have a microchip catflap but like your stray, our local one sprays on my door too.

I don't really like coming home to that, thankyou. I have no answers for you - but I feel your pain...

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2013 09:27

The smell off unneutered tomcat spray is vile.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 09:57

Hmmmm update.

Went to neighbours. Fred was nuetered last week and has become very tame over the last few months, he showed me him snoozing on the sofa. He was also in last night at theirs and they have no cat flap. So I'm stumped on which cats spraying my house. Guess it's lemon juice in the back door today and joiner out quoting for a new door. Grin

Suspicion now moves to newish black and white cat also seen exiting out of our house after feeds. Bloody hell.

Neighbour was a bit Hmm with me. Oh well.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 10:00

Ches - it's like when you open your door, eau de cat piss permeates every room in the house. Grrrrr

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 10:01

Also buying a water pistol, putting a bit of lemon juice in it (diluted) cat flap to in only, catch the bugger, blast him a few times then let it out, maybe that will deter it.

Yeah, I was about to say neutering is amazing, it isn't just because of breeding it is encouraged (that is obviously one of the main reasons though) but also because you end up with completely different cats: calm, friendly, loving and non-smelly! I'm sure this guy will be fine once he's lost part of his anatomy! Grin

blackbirdatglanmore · 24/06/2013 10:16

Ray, are both yours boys? There isn't a queen on heat around, is there?

My kittens (boy and girl) came from a rescue centre and I was told they'd been done - they hadn't! First I knew of it was when two toms were seducing my girl Shock and I now have a litter of kittens on the way Hmm my boy has been snipped, however! Girl is being whisked to the vet after she has had her litter! But anyway - my garden was full of yowling toms at one point, it was terrible.

fuzzypicklehead · 24/06/2013 10:42

OP, are you absolutely sure that your own cat isn't doing some spraying of his own? Neutered cats WILL spray if they feel they need to defend their territory against an invader. My advice would be to just get rid of the cat flap full stop and let your cat in and out.

TheSitChewAceChien · 24/06/2013 11:01

YADefinitelyNBU and you've be very, very patient!

What are you using to clean it up? You probably know this, but just in case, bleach apparently makes tom cats spray more the fucking nuisances
I threw a bucket of bleachy water down after my front door had been sprayed, and not only did it make my neutered female cat roll around in it Hmm it also made the tom cat do it over and over again until I used Zoflora.

Hope you get it sorted soon!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/06/2013 11:12

Use biological washing powder on the area that has been sprayed. The enzymes in it will break down the cat pee, other cats may be being attracted to the area to mark over someone elses markings.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 14:15

My cats a speyed female, ive never seen her spray once.

Zoflora next on my shopping list.

Just going to have to buy a new door and get microchip cat flap fitted. :)

I had a similar issue and ended up getting the cat homed with a friend as RSPCA and cats protection wouldn't take it and I was about to give birth so couldn't cope with continually chasing the pesky cat out of the house, Cats protection will however come and collect the cat for neutering then return it but won't take it away (even if you took a cat off their hands previously as I had!).

My friend and cat are very happy together btw.

SquinkiesRule · 24/06/2013 15:39

We have had this problem too, our old neighbor used to feed a whole load of strays, they were breeding in her garden. I really didn't mind that as it was her business, and theres a field between the houses, but once they started trying to live at my house and were spraying so my house smelled like cat piss, all bets are off. We bought a cat trap, and caught them, they were feral, wild, sick looking cats. All the friendly neighbor cats we let go at once, they were all fat and fixed and had homes.
We dropped off to the pound a lot! They have a vet and treat all of them, some go to adoption and other who are too sick are euthanized.

chansondumatin · 24/06/2013 17:54

It could well be the stray cat is spraying still - you need to allow a few weeks for the testosterone to work its way out of his system. Neutering does the trick but the effects aren't instant.

Biological detergent is great for getting rid of the smell. You may then find that other cats are less inclined to spray the area in retaliation.

ratbagcatbag · 24/06/2013 20:48

Had someone come and quote a new door with cat flap, hey ho. Could do without it as my daft dog is undergoing ultrasound tomorrow for suspected tumour, vets bill approx cost between £300 - £1100 depending on what happens. Eeeek

Hmmm.. it's well known that I hate cats and have a psychopathic obsession for keeping the poopers out of our garden BUT I actually feel sorry for your moggy being so territorially assaulted! Anyway, not sure if it'll work without affecting your cat but you could try putting some vicks or olbas oil around the door/catflap (and little bits of flypaper in strategic places if you're demented enough!). We have had a degree of success with both these deterrents. Good luck Ratbag and well done for being so patient - I'd definitely have trapped the thing by now and dropped it into the rescue centre place.

Cats are like marmite I think in that you either love them or hate them. If any cat lovers are offended by my suggestions then flipping well stop your beasties crapping in my garden!

EliotNess · 25/06/2013 00:30

You're a psychopath ?

Kytti · 25/06/2013 01:46

ratbagcatbag OK - fair point. That would rile me too!

isabellamum · 25/06/2013 07:23

Cats protection or RSPCA should be able to loan you or the neighbours a trap - much safer

Your neighbours saying must be before 9 for vets to take him - have you checked admit times with vet ? Most will accomodate later drop off wthin reason especially if it prevents unwanted litters and spread of disease that toms cause

Also be aware neutering may stop him spraying but may not stop him still coming in your house or beating your cat up
