To be shocked at what came out of my ear?

I have been deaf in one ear for about a week and a half, this has been a bit frightening and odd.

The night it happened I cleaned my ears and had a shower, I was washing my hair and the water went in but it wouldn't come out. I tried everything google suggested and then had to sleep, Apparently sometimes it clears overnight. It didn't and I felt all weird for the next few days. Then it started to get a little better until I went to the gym, had a shower and the same thing happened again!

Again it was horrible but then improved a little over the next few days until Friday, wen I had an itch in my ear at work scratched inside and out came the cotton from the cotton bud!!! Bloody hell it had been in there over a week.

Aibu for buying cheap ear cleaners from pound land? I think the answer is yes, however wibu to complain?
I'm quite shaken up although it was amazing when it came out and I could hear again!

I got the end of a cotton bud stuck in my ear last year. I arrived on holiday, had a shower and hair wash and cleaned my ears a bit with a Qtip and the end piece came off in my ear and was stuck. I spent the rest of the day with a slightly uncomfortable ear, but in the evening I managed to pull it out as I got hold of a strand of it with my finger and it came out whole. Since then I've checked and pulled at each end piece before using it, but really you shouldn't use them at all.

But TBH I don't know how people manage without them altogether. My ds would be dropping big lumps of wax all around the place and looking badly groomed if he didn't sometimes use a Qtip on the outer area. Sometimes you can see the lumps of wax half out of his ear.

Hair grips are the best.

I love love love watching earwax removal on youtube. Has anyone seen them? Especially love it when underneath a mountain of black impacted earwax that has surely been there since birth is a dead insect Shock

I remember years ago reading something in the British Medical Journal about some volunteers in a first aid post somewhere extracting the parts of a whole cockroach from a child's ear. Poor child was sleeping on the floor in filthy conditions - it was quite common apparently. (shudders) Sad

DH regularly has boulders of ear was trundling out of his ear, it's like Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

He's a catch and a half.

Manchesterhistorygirl · 23/06/2013 15:06

Syringing is so passé! You want to try aural suction! Now that's brilliant and sooooooo satisfying.

(I have bad ears and have had burst eardrums due to recurrent infections)

cocolepew · 23/06/2013 15:38

I read that as anal sucking, when I saw it on TIO! Shock

Oh god. I've just seen things you can't unsee. Blackheads. I used to think DH's adult acne was a bit grim. Oh no. He has the skin of a newborn baby in comparison.

Wellwobbly · 23/06/2013 19:26

Never ever ever use cotton buds to clean your ears!

but hairpins are fantastic Blush

Fakebook · 23/06/2013 19:31

I use exfoliating gloves in the shower and ear buds. My mum used to use hair grips! That's so olden days!

Fakebook · 23/06/2013 19:31

My husband dips the cotton bud in aftershave and cleans his ears every morning.

ithaka · 23/06/2013 19:32

When DH was a lad, he stuck the brown leather tag that came off his satchel in his ear. he couldn't get it out, didn't want to admit it to his parents, and then forgot about it.

Fast forward years later to when he is a student with an ear infection/sore ear. He goes to get it syringed & guess what comes out - yes, the leather tag from his satchel had been in there for years. Mental.

Mind you, DH is the master of denial when it comes to all things physical. He claims (and I believe him) that when he went to scout camp he didn't shit for 2 weeks as he couldn't face the lat tent.

purple15 · 23/06/2013 19:44

I had an obsession with ear buds . Then started to go deaf, it turned out I had a brain tumour (acoustic neuroma) in the inner ear. I suffered major complications and it has been a major recovery back to health.

I think it all started form the ear buds ! Stay away from them. They are Dangerous
