Here in France they are really popular for adults- lots of students, mums doing school runs, business men in suits use them every day. I've plenty friends who use them all the time. So I don't think YABU at all.

I've got one to keep up with DS2 (2.5)

I get a lot of laughs and comments but plenty of people saying they want one!

Maybe I look like an idiot but I couldn't care less.

It's difficult to keep up with tots on scooters without running along - I like to get to the roads before him to make sure he stops and learns to be safe!

It is also much quicker to whizz down to the shops on when you just want a couple of bits and pieces...

Get one....great fun!

Oh my god I would love one they look like such fun! Sown times I feel like skipping too not often and you'd get such looks

I know a 2 year old devil child little boy who scoots along with his back foot propped casually on the footboard behind him. He looks angelic and very cool Envy

Is it wrong to be a bit jealous of a two year old?

I will get one then, so what people think. Here in Milton Keynes there are plenty of red ways to ride on

Scooters are amazing, so much fun. Life is too short to care about strangers thinking you're a tit.

I use my eldest son's on the way back from school.

I don't care if I look daft. I love it! So much faster than walking too.

Go for it.

I used my DD's adult microscooter last weekend as part of a fitness drive. I nearly killed myself twice. Once on a bump on the cycle path part of the pavement and once on a micro piece of twig. I've got two huge bruises to show for it.

I've got an adult one and I love it. I can keep up with DS which means no worries of him disappearing off without me, or having to hang around for me to catch up with him.

It's a lovely way to get from A to B - quicker than walking and much more fun. One of my friends uses one to get to work as parking nearby is expensive and rarely possible anyway.

I probably look daft to people whether I'm on a scooter or not - couldn't care less what they think. Life is too short.

Wow I want one. However, 1) they are really expensive, and 2) why does it not come in pink in adult sized Sad

If I could get away with spacehoppering around I would (how cool would that be!!) But alas I think DH may just find grounds for divorce in that Grin

this is what I want

seriously good fun

spent hours as a child trying to jet propel my boards got into homemade hovercrafts in the end, but this was what I wanted.

this was the dream, all the old skater, surfer adults around here are green as the teens zip by, I have had a few goes, and it is defiantly the way forward, skating up hill.

I really hope they come down in price soon.

I really wanted to get one a few years ago but DH pretty much threatened me with divorce so that was that.

It's interesting that we're not allowed to use scooters, but inline skating is considered okay, as are other potentially undignified activities like running, cycling, skiing, even swimming and so on. It's obviously some sort of bizarre cultural bias against poor scooters!

Well if my children are on scooters on the pavement - it's much easier to be on the pavement with them (we are not talking anywhere where there are generally many other people walking here)...than on a bike on the road.....

It's just a different form of transport.

The advent of microscooters making scooting possibly for much younger children -seems to have caused certain sectors of us to assume - it can only be for small children.

It's really no different from cycling....just quicker to grab a scooter and nip down to the shops, no need to padlock bikes up - fold scooters up and carry around.

If that makes me look an idiot so be it - but actually it says more about those judging me than anything else!

I would love to use a space hopper to get around, but they just aren't practical.

Go for it, OP! Scoot with pride and ignore the po-faced mumbling boring people. At least you have the courage to do what you enjoy and don't give a fig over what others think.

do it!! i wish i had one but i would look like a complete knobhead. godo for you. people laugh at me wearing a high vis jacket and cycle helmet (when i am cycling, i hasten to add, not just when i am walking) but i couldn't give a rats arse.

brilliant for a quick nip to the shops, library etc ... save yourself loads of time. yee hah!!

pleased I'm not alone. I have one and it is the difference between me dropping DD at breakfast club when it opens and getting to work on time in central London, and not. And I save £2.80 a day in bus fares which adds up over the week. And it is the best fun. You don't care what others think when you whooshing past them going WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I'm seeing more and more of them around in town and at home, all kinds - but my favourite was the lady who told me she was in her 80s down our High Street. Her grand daughter had one, she loved it and got her own. She wasn't the fastest but told me it helped her get around and wouldn't have been able to walk to the shops and back but could scoot.

Theoneandonlyallan - which one do you have and do you use it on the pavement or road?

Report
TheOneAndOnlyAllan · 22/06/2013 21:18

I have the Micro scooter Flex blue - has solid wheels so no risk of punctures but has a skateboard-esque ply board to iron out bumps and vibration. Go on pavements to school, across park to station, fold it up on train, to central London and then to work, return trip via nursery pick up too. I thought about getting a folding bike but decided in central London I'd rather be the most dangerous thing on the pavement than the most vulnerable thing on the road. Realised adding it up I probably do 4-5 miles on it each day.
