They seem to be everywhere? I think we've got a nest in the loft but the pest control people say they can't do anything about because they are an endangered species!

StuntGirl · 21/06/2013 17:16

I would move out.

Pascha · 21/06/2013 17:17

You should google beekeepers in your area. They can take it away for you.

OldBeanbagz · 21/06/2013 17:18

Are they in the house? In which case, no YANBU.

But if they're outside then what harm are they doing?

ParadiseChick · 21/06/2013 17:19

Zzub zzub zzub

That's them flying backwards, out your loft hopefully

MrsBertMacklin · 21/06/2013 17:20

This should cheer you up, then. Poor murdered bees.

OldBeanbagz · 21/06/2013 17:21

Info about beekkeepers here. You need to identify them first, then see how you can deal with them.

TabithaStephens · 21/06/2013 17:23

I rang the council, they put me through to a bee expert, and he said they can't bee destroyed and just have to bee left, should go away at the end of the summer.

TabithaStephens · 21/06/2013 17:23

They are bumblebees.

peggotty · 21/06/2013 17:25

Without bees we would all die. Fact.

Pascha · 21/06/2013 17:25

Oh bumblebees are nice. A bit dopey but entirely unconcerned with you and happy to bumble away. They'll be gone in a couple of months. We had some in the cavity of our kitchen extension wall before the door was properly fixed in. We had to drill a couple of holes in the mortar for them to get in and out and they were very happy. All gone by mid - august though. They only live a season.

CheeseStrawWars · 21/06/2013 17:29

Bumblebees are under threat of extinction according to the British Beekeepers Association.

teenagetantrums · 21/06/2013 18:04

they wont hurt you and will be gone in the autumn, beekeepers only care about honey bees so just let your bumble bees go about their lives and block up the entrance when they leave after summer

Sallystyle · 21/06/2013 18:09

We have a nest in our garden. I love it.

TheRealFellatio · 21/06/2013 18:10

We bought a house that came with an active bees nest in the loo. Hmm We were told that the local friendly beekeeper was luring them away to live with him. It didn't work. The following year we got a different man in to nuke the bastards. That worked. Job done.

But a couple of years later we had some building work done on the room below, and we thought the ceiling was falling down, so we got the men to remove some saggy sections of plasterboard and replace it, and it turned out the reason it was sagging was because there was ten tons of honeycomb in the space between the floorboards, and it was dripping onto the builders' heads. Grin

valiumredhead · 21/06/2013 18:54

There are tons in our garden - don't know what they keep on about on the news about the shortage of bees!

Khaleasy · 21/06/2013 19:13

Sorry read the title and immediately thought of this:

I have nothing constructive to add Grin other than backing up the beekeeper thing - they'll only get them if they are honey bees though...

FrankSpenser · 21/06/2013 19:16

Do bumble bees make honey? (thick)

I personally love bees. In the city you don't really see many bees/butterflys/other country wildlife as much.

I've been trying to plant up containers with flowers to encourage more into my horrible looking bare yard. Its kind of working.

I've got loads of massive headed pertunias and loads of mixed violas. Do bees like pertunias?

Fakebook · 21/06/2013 19:16

Please just put up with it. I like bees. They're so majestic.

Pascha · 21/06/2013 19:21

They do make honey, but only enough to live on. Bees love any flowering plant. Petunias are no exception.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 21/06/2013 19:29

for those of you who love bees

silasramsbottom · 21/06/2013 19:34

Bumblebees are lovely. Wasps, now they are proper bad guys!

Binkyridesagain · 21/06/2013 19:34

I love fat bottomed bumble bees.

Squirrellywoo · 21/06/2013 19:48

We had a honey bee nest in the chimney. We were told by the local beekeeper that they wouldn't stay - 5 years later they were still going strong. Throughout the summer up to 20 would come into the house everyday - they tended to gather by the windows/doors but we managed to tolerate each other.
However, with a toddler now in the mix we decided to get rid of them. The pest controller used insecticide powder around the nest. All done in 30 minutes.
Most bee keepers would be happy to round up a nest, if they can reach it. Worth a try. Unfortunately, this one was too deep in the chimney.

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2013 20:02

Frank, try buddleia and lavender :)

OP, I'm very jealous I'd love the opportunity to do some real life conservation work like you!

Thanks
gamerchick · 21/06/2013 20:12

Yanno, bumbles can't see us. We're too big, so it's unlikely that they'll bother you.
