to expect adults to wash their hands after using public toilets, esp when dressed in uniform!

I was in tescos lunchtime getting a sandwich and used their loo.
There was a queue as they were being cleaned, so gave me a few mins to people watch and look about. The woman behind me was in a local care company tunic top which I recognised as it had their logo on it. She was obviously in her work clothes and had no shopping or handbag with her.
We went into adjacent cubicles and came out at the same time. She just left the toilets making no effort to wash or sanitise her hands in any way. I saw her 5 mins later in the carp park driving off, presumably on her visits.

AIBU to think this is outrageous?
Should I complain to her care company employer?
Why don't adults wash their hands in public toilets?

Car Park. Not Carp Park!

That is vile. I hope she washes her hands at her next call

livinginwonderland · 20/06/2013 16:25

People are disgusting. It takes thirty seconds! Nobody is THAT busy.

GingerCurry · 20/06/2013 16:45

Would it be unreasonable for me to complain about this to her employer?

I feel really strongly about this, for whatever reason its really narked me.

I recently took dd into a toilet cubicle - she had a rash and I wanted to take her tights off to see it. We went to leave and a woman had a go at me for not washing my hands. I didn't touch the toilet so didn't feel I needed too. Maybe she didn't actually go. It's pretty grim but there are worse things.

Montybojangles · 20/06/2013 16:58

It is disgusting that she didn't wash her hands, but how do you know she didn't sanitize them with alcohol gel when she got ack to her car? Health care professionals who make home visit carry a bottle in the car generally.

Yanbu. People always turn up on these threads though saying 'but the doors are germy so I use gel outside' ignoring the fact that they are making the doors germy for the people who wash their hands before they leave.

BrokenBanana · 20/06/2013 17:22

I do wonder about that though Kitty, cos I bet the doors are heaving with germs. Plus there's always a blowy hand dryer and they're full of germs as well.
I always wash my hands but I do wonder what difference it makes.

Justforlaughs · 20/06/2013 17:26

Hehehe! I love these threads! [evil grin emoticon] Grin, nothing like a good handwashing thread to get the ranters out in droves!

fairylightsinthespring · 20/06/2013 18:14

OFGS we are so ridiculously over the top about all this. "vile", "disgusting"?? Really, as an adult I am assuming she didn't wee on her hands, touch the seat with anything other than her arse and as a HCP yes almost certainly sanitise her hands afterwards. I rarely wash my hands after just a quick pee - I really really don't think its is necessary (unless the bathroom is particularly unpleasant) and I honestly can't remember having any kind of stomach upset in my adult life.

WandaDoff · 20/06/2013 18:18

All the carers that came in to my MIL wore gloves at all times when with service users. I would have thought that would be standard practice

Purple2012 · 20/06/2013 18:20

A lot of public toilets are manky so if they are I use the hand gel I keep in my bag when ive left. If the toilets are nice and clean I wash my hands there.

NeverBeenToMe · 20/06/2013 18:23

I thought antibac hand gels were ineffective on 'dirty' hands?

Shutupanddrive · 20/06/2013 18:24

YANBU

SomeDizzyWhore1804 · 20/06/2013 18:39

Never wash my hands- always wait til I'm outside and use alcohol gel I have in my handbag. I always think the sinks and soap dispensers in most public loos look grim and would rather not touch them. Maybe it's just me?!

GingerCurry · 20/06/2013 19:41

Well sorry but I can't fathom that some people think its ok not to wash your hands in a clean public loo with fine and dandy washing and drying facilities.

I also can't get my head around a health care worker in uniform making no attempt to clean her hands after using a public toilet.

My understanding is that alcohol gels are a poor substitute for proper handwashing and drying. OK in the context of no good facilities but not OK for all purpose cleaning.

Those that don't wash their hands , do you teach you children to do the same or encourage handwashing?

This is a new world for me!

Oh and for what its worth I have phoned the agency and informed their office of my feelings.

McNewPants2013 · 20/06/2013 20:10

if i am with my DC and there is a hand dryer I can't wash my hands, hand dryers would lead to a melt down.

I do carry hand gel, because something is better than nothing

cansu · 20/06/2013 20:11

You are being utterly ridiculous. Plus you have absolutely no business phoning the office of where she works. FGS get a life of your own and mind your own beeswax. She was not at work. Find this actually hard to believe really.

DramaAlpaca · 20/06/2013 20:14

Agree with cansu. Absolutely none of your business.

VRBennett83 · 20/06/2013 20:22

I don't think there is much point phoning the company as it would embarrass her and her offence is a minor (albeit unhygienic) one. I agree with others that she may have used alcohol wipes or gel either in the cubicle before leaving or in her car etc. I'd just steer clear of the care company she works for.

pigletmania · 20/06/2013 21:41

Grim fairy, I hope you wash your hands before preparing food

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 20/06/2013 22:10

people that dont wash their hands baffle me Confused

Montybojangles · 20/06/2013 22:51

Alcohol gel is perfectly acceptable provided the hands are not physically soiled. As I doubt she pee'd on her hands it should be sufficient.

Personally I wash my hands, but if there were no facilities I would be happy that alcohol gel correctly used would be fine.

How on earth can you be so sure she did not sanitise her hands once she got to her car? She possibly didn't, but can you be sure? Can't believe you have called her place of work. If you were that bothered you should have simply challenged her to her face to allow her the right to respond.
