Thats it basically I know it may seem some what trivial but I'm not made of money I can't afford to simply replace it, I spent a lot of time and effort making it look perfect for someone to think they have the right to take whatever they want Sad

Thats shit some people are scumbags :(

whois · 19/06/2013 08:37

Oh that is really shit :-(

GrendelsMum · 19/06/2013 08:38

Oh, poor old you. I've had this happen to me, so I really sympathise.

Take it as the ultimate compliment, though - you'd done such a good job making it look wonderful that someone thought they'd rather have yours than the one they could get down the garden centre!

FWIW, we replaced it with some narrow but long planters that we made ourselves out of planks and things, and they haven't walked.

Yonihadtoask · 19/06/2013 08:41

That sucks.

I Hope they enjoy looking at it, but surely not with a clear conscience.

Once in my prev house we planted a row of young conifers across the front garden.

Next morning there were sic neatly dug holes, a trail of soil up the street and no conifers. Bastards.

We then planted a very prickly hedge, no one took that!!

QOD · 19/06/2013 08:41

My mum always uses a cable tie on the plant and hook having had a few stolen

bootsycollins · 19/06/2013 08:42

Arw that's really shitty. We use those plastic clip tie things to secure the basket to the hangy thing, but nobody would want to nick my hanging basket because it's shite.

Hullygully · 19/06/2013 08:43

You'd be U if you weren't upset, surely?

SquirrelNuts · 19/06/2013 09:04

There are some horrid people around!
Cable ties is a good idea I just never even imagined someone would steal a hanging basket!

FryOneFatManic · 19/06/2013 09:04

It's not a trivial thing really. I can understand your upset.

At our old house (so this was about 10 years ago) DP planted a really nice ceanothus in the front garden. 2 days later, I found a neat hole where someone had dug it up. It was clear they'd taken it for their own garden as there was no trail of soil, and I'd expect someone who dug it up for "fun" would have just dumped it on the ground.

Still pisses me off. Angry

MaxPepsi · 19/06/2013 09:37

That's shit.

I'm still annoyed someone stole my jubilee flag last year, nothing expensive but it's the principal.

We have our hanging baskets at the back of the house but we have tubs at the front and I half expect them to be stolen sometimes.

Squitten · 19/06/2013 09:39

That sucks. Who the hell steals hanging baskets FFS?

rosieposey · 19/06/2013 09:54

I had two lovely really full and heavy hanging baskets last summer - they looked absolutely beautiful but one morning i went out of my front door and they were gone.

I was really, really pissed off as i had paid quite a lot from the garden centre for them!

thefuturesnotourstosee · 19/06/2013 09:58

I would be furious never mind upset.

When I was a student we decided to try to make our front garden look nice by planting a rose bush and putting in some wild flower seeds. Next morning rose bush gone and we couldnt' afford to replace it :(

Its incredible what people will steal

SuperiorCat · 19/06/2013 09:59

Some bastard stole the (tasteful) Christmas lights from the tree in our front garden. DH was tempted to rewire the replacements so that they gave off electric shocks.

SquirrelNuts · 19/06/2013 10:09

Exactly squitten should realise everything has to be bolted down nowadays very sad!

OP posts:
SquirrelNuts · 19/06/2013 10:13

rosieposey it was a big basket and very heavy when it first went up dp had to hang it so they must have struggled with it, it was the nicest one I've ever done and ds helped me so he's upset that his pink flowers have gone

It's ridiculous isn't it. It would make me so angry. We had DS's sledge get pinched once, we live on a cut through right next to a country park that has great hills for sledging and when it snows loads of people walk by with sledges, someone saw DS's and obviously fancied one more. Angry

I have glass lanterns hanging at the front of my house. My mum said that they'd be stolen but so far they are still there!

yaimee · 19/06/2013 10:38

Yanbu at all. We used to live in a student area and all our tubs were nicked on a fairly regular basis. Apparently plants are hilarious to drunk students.
We actually used to track them down and knock on doors demanding an explaination, that is when they weren't smashed in the street.
I used to get really upset because the area was a notorious shit hole and the plants were our way of trying to make our home/street a little bit nicer.
So no, yanbu to be upset and angry that something you put effort into and enjoy has been stolen. Bastards!

SquirrelNuts · 19/06/2013 10:43

It is ridiculous I don't know whether to replace it or put my trough in the back garden in case they come back for that. I don't live in the nicest of areas/houses but big bright flowers just make things nicer to come home to IYSWIM

steppemum · 19/06/2013 11:03

it is truly rubbish

Mine are never nice enough to steal!

And our neighbours have lots of lovely ones, so they would go first!

Thinking of getting plastic tabs now though Sad

aldiwhore · 19/06/2013 11:05

An ex-friend of mine nicked a Christmas Wreath when they were drunk, ffs this woman is in her 30's, a mum, 'naice' and thought it was hilarious. I would have been forgiving if she'd returned it once sober, but she proudly hung it on her own door.

Karma does happen though, the rightful owner spotted it, and before confronting her, made sure that EVERYONE knew about it.

Part of me feels sad for the ex-mate who's paid a pretty big price in a small village for being such a scumster, part of me thinks it's her own damn fault.

BeaLola · 19/06/2013 11:08

sorry to hear this but sadly not surprised as this has happened to us too.... I think some people would take anything - hopefully they will get there just rewards somehow.

I would be tempted to put trough in back garden so its safer or cement it down.... though that said we had some pillars stolen in the road where I used to live!

Flowers
aldiwhore · 19/06/2013 11:11

Flowering shrubs that are hard to pinch could be an option too.

We have a couple of lovely reclaimed concrete planters that I can't shift easily.

People are horrible sometimes. (Mostly they're lovely though!)
