In tesco yesterday. My trolley contained mostly value products, including fruit, veg, meat and cheese. I am on a very tight budget. 2 women behind me and I hear one stage-whisper "would you buy all that crap?"

Woman 2 says something I didn't hear, then woman 1 says "could be for the food bank, you wouldn't give them quality stuff..."

I turned and glared, they obviously realised I'd heard and looked embarrassed.

I should have said something, shouldn't I? What a cow Sad

besides which, value food is also good for farmers- it used to be that tons of their produce would have to be thrown away because it was substandard.
at least now they get to sell it albeit at a lower price

FryOneFatManic · 17/06/2013 21:57

I didn't decant to hide the brand (or non-brand) just the food the DCs like can get squished, etc, and mini pots stack nicely in the lunchbags protecting the food.

It only occurred to me from reading the earlier posts that here was another thing kids could be bullied on.

Fairydogmother · 17/06/2013 21:59

I might have been tempted to waste a value tomato by aiming at their heads! What snobs!

I buy what I like to eat - some is branded and most isn't. Why pay 3 times as much for bleach to stick down the loo! I go by feel and smell for veg and try to buy in season. We've turned into coupon masters too - it's v satisfying getting bargains!

OhTheConfusion · 17/06/2013 21:59

Silly snooty woman!

My trolly is about 40% value, 30% own brand and 30% branded/luxury.
Some value items are great!!! Morrisons lemon curd. Sainsburys pitta bread (toasted incase anyone has read that thread Wink), pancakes, pan au chocolat and diluting orange. Tesco lemonade (as a mixer) and tinned sweetcorn.

UniqueAndAmazing · 17/06/2013 22:00

i'ddecant too- you can buy bigger tubs and put a couple of scoops into a mini tub for lunches.

Lurleene · 17/06/2013 22:02

A couple of definitions:

val·ue (vly)

crap 1 (krp) Vulgar Slang

Hissy · 17/06/2013 22:10

Some old git boy made some crappy remark about it being a waste of time to buy those bloody free-range eggs.

I said nothing, but thought, well the chickens don't agree with you...

Then I pottered down to the marked down section, and beat him to bagged myself 2 raspberry and cream doughnuts!

That, old boy, was KARMA!

Please don't let those two nasty cunty cows bother you. You are worth a gazillion of them x

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 17/06/2013 23:44

What hurtful things for them to say. You did well to remain calm. I on the other hand would have been escorted out by security into a waiting police van by the time I'd finished with them.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 18/06/2013 06:23

Ha thanks all. If I am ever in a position to donate to a food bank I shall think carefully about what to put in Smile

Aw that's awful, made me feel quite sad actually. Console yourself with the fact they must be sad twats to be bothered by what is in your trolley! They obviously have nothing interesting in their lives to discuss.

pumpkinsweetie · 18/06/2013 06:51

What scumbags, you did best to ignore. Rise above it, you are the better personSmile

It is always best to ignore- sometimes it feels as if you ought to say your piece but in reality it is much better simply to ignore and write them off as beneath contempt.

Hissy · 18/06/2013 07:11

I heard that value meals were actually great to use for DC, as the levels of seasoning, salt etc are less.

Your trolley, your money. Your shopping, those women were rude.

I hope you shot them a withering look.

johnworf · 18/06/2013 07:23

Go to ALDI where no one moans about what's in your trolley....cos it's probably in theirs too Smile

Actually I was about this last night well 3am Grin.

I was Shopping the other week buying peppers and they were 80p for one or £1.75 for 3 or you could buy a bag of Asda smart price ones for £1.60 for 7.

Even if you are not on a budget who in their right mind would so much for one pepper when 9 times out 10 you just chop them up anyway.

I think some people just think so brainwashed to think brand names are better, rather then trying non brand items.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 18/06/2013 07:56

Ds2 was picked on for a while about what was in his lunch, from them thinking his bread wasn't as fluffy and white as theirs to his drink being morrisons or Asdas own pure orange juice.

He says he's not bothered but I tend to buy chrisps and chocolate when there on offer now for the odd occasion he asks for them, I also put things in pots now so if he asks for raisins they go in a pot with some grapes rather than Asdas own little boxes.

He still has value pure orange cartons though as he loves them and I'm not buying ribena or fruit shoots just because everyone else does when he's not that keen on them.

I don't think anyone has said anything about his small odd shaped apples yet! Grin

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 18/06/2013 07:59

where I do exactly that - the price of peppers is outrageous!

LuisSuarezTeeth · 18/06/2013 08:48

I worked out that i fed 5 of us last night for 88p per person. I did cottage pie and veg - value mince and veg with frozen broccoli. The kids had seconds as well. Also bananas and custard at approximately 30p each.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/06/2013 09:09

Luis, yes, I was disturbed by both comments. Let's hope neither of those women ever need help from a food bank themselves, if they're so horrified at the quality of food people donate to 'them'.

PS your dinner sounds fabulous. Banana and custard is a classic!

You're right MrsDeVere it does stick with you. Saying that I always give my DD own brand fruit juice as branded is ridiculously expensive but again the packaging isn't as distinctive as value
