teacher fired for being a domestic violence victim. A lot of the parents agree with the decision. How do you feel about this?

To sack her though? she is NOT responsible for another person's action.

But I don't know if the parents are being unreasonable or not worrying about the safety of their children. It would definitely be in the back of my mind but I wouldn't want her sacked at all.

It's just sad all round.

That Grace university is a private Bible college, a state university couldn't do that.

It's not surprising that the school and the parents are jittery about a violent thug turning up to the school to threaten her, what if next time he turns up with a gun and starts shooting? School shootings are too big a threat there to not take these things seriously. They are a small private school so probably can't afford an armed guard to protect against this man (even if they could the children would still be at risk in the crossfire).

They have two options; keep her there and accept that he will follow her upon release from prison, most likely armed (it's America) and if he can't get to her shoot the children (plus get a huge lawsuit and be blamed in the media for not doing anything to prevent it) or they can let her go and have to close the school due to half the students being pulled out for their own safety. Which will leave all the staff without jobs.

The school sent her a letter stating that there has been restraining orders against him going back twenty years for violent behaviour towards women and anyone he sees standing in his way. www.nydailynews.com/news/national/california-domestic-violence-victim-fired-teach-san-diego-diocese-school-article-1.1371605
They are obviously worried that his behaviour is escalating and feel that they can't protect the staff and children with her presence attracting him there.

The law that allows violent people to be released while they are still a danger should be changed but as things stand the school have to be able to do what is necessary to protect the majority.

"The law that allows violent people to be released while they are still a danger should be changed."

It is absolutely astonishing that someone like that is allowed to walk free.

LondonBus · 15/06/2013 15:28

At the bottom of this is gun crime.

Parents in the US are all too aware of the possibilities that can happen when unstable people with guns and schools are combined. Sad

The school may believe the are doing the right thing for the parents/children, but the diocese have badly let this woman and her children down.

And I do wonder if they needed to reduce staff, and she was an easy option.

I hope she files and wins a court case against them.

My children come 1st, and if I thought there was a threat to them in school I would pull them out and find another school. I think the school was in the right as thier first responsibility is the safety of the children attending.

I hope this women is getting all the help and supports she needs.

DrSnowman · 15/06/2013 17:21

I am outraged, I view the conduct of the school to be dire.

Regardless of what the law is the school have acted in a very bad way, this is the sort of thing which gives the catholic church a bad name.

I sincerely hope she sues the school for every cent, the other parents who were threatening to withdraw their children if this teacher goes back disgust me.

pigletmania · 15/06/2013 17:33

Macnew she is not getting much help nd support as she has lost her job and is being treated like she I the criminal. If he's tat violent nd unpredictable he should not be on the streets.

ReallyTired · 15/06/2013 17:39

I am not sure sure which is worse, the woman losing her career or her chidlren being permamently excluded from the school.

I feel that the Catholic should have offered her help to move state and start a new life. Her working at that school is compromising EVERYONE'S safety including that of her and her children.

It is shocking and wonder if there is a back story that we don't know about.

lljkk · 15/06/2013 17:39

She's found a lawyer who will try to sue for her, though. And the resulting publicity is poison.
Colombine had an armed security guard. He just happened to be off work with illness one day.
