Noticed on freecycle a request for any lego you are going to throw out. Trivial i know but really.

Ours is going to be kept for 30 odd years until future grandkids need it. It's cost a fortune to put together a decent collection, there is no way it's going anywhere.

Tryharder · 14/06/2013 14:25

The man parked next to me at the tip was throwing out a huge box crammed with Brio wooden railway track and trains. He was literally about to throw it into landfill skip when I liberated it (now being played with every day by DD and DS2)

At least give it to charity or freecycle even if you don't want to sell it on.

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 14/06/2013 14:28

My kids have a huge bucket of it that used to be mine that my mother saved. I'll be keeping that and the extra bucket they've accumulated fir their kids.

No way would I chuck it!

ParadiseChick · 14/06/2013 14:29

I used to have a dining table, I now have a Lego workshop, I used to have a house you could walk around barefoot without getting attacked by the little bricks. I used to relax on reading sat afternoons without the sound of rummaging in a box of Lego providing a background noise.

But throw it out? Never!

Not until the youngest has been through the Lego phase.

Although the odd bit does end up in Henry.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2013 14:29

We've got crates of Lego in our attic. I'm keeping it for any visiting children/future grandchildren.

We had loads of Playmobil too. When mine outgrew it I gave it all to my SIL whose kids are younger than mine.

Then she went and sold it all on eBay when her kids outgrew it. I was irrationally annoyed about that. I didn't say anything to her, but I did sort of think she'd hang on to it.

Quenelle · 14/06/2013 14:31

I might throw it out in a temper after stepping on one piece too many Angry Grin

bigTillyMint · 14/06/2013 14:34

We have a load, but I am loathe to throw it out or pass it on!

WeAllHaveWings · 14/06/2013 14:55

ds(9) had a good few years playing with his Duplo and Lego (we always kept the boxes and instructions in good nick in loft) and then we sold it (ebay/gumtree) in lots and made at least £400.

Usually got at least 1/2 to 2/3 of original price, one set we got more than we paid for it (bought for £35 in Sainsburys sale, played with for a couple of years, and got £75 on ebay for used with instructions & box, as it was discontinued and someone wanted it for their lego city!)

All the money went back to ds and he used it to buy himself a stunt scooter, a bike and a couple of other bits and pieces.

Lego - the gift that keeps giving!

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 14/06/2013 15:26

For my birthday last year I got the best gift ever... my MIL evicted my lego collection from her loft (she had kept it safe when we were moving, and she ended up storing it for 9 years Blush ) and dumped it in my living room. DH, our DC and I had the best weekend ever recreating my lego sets.
DH still sulks that his parents gave most of his to his cousins... 20 years ago.
Lego is one of those toys that never really goes out of favour, so no way will I ever get rid of it.

Ragwort · 14/06/2013 15:32

Not every child is into Lego Hmm - my DS never, ever played with it, despite lots of well meaning gifts for many years Grin - I happily passed it on to whoever wanted it or gave it to charity shops.

Those of you hanging on to stuff for grandchildren, please think carefully ........... MIL proudly handed back some of DH's toys when we had our DS. We really, really didn't want them, but difficult to say 'no' (why not keep at your own house for visiting DGC?).

ballinacup · 14/06/2013 15:35

My MIL gave DP's suitcase of Lego to SIL for her kids. I'm currently trying to think of a tactful way to ask for it back when DS is old enough to play with it Grin

crunchbag · 14/06/2013 15:53

My parents kept our lego, playmobil and barbies and now all 5 grandchildren happily play with it.

PIL gave most of DH's lego and action man toys away to younger cousins and now regret doing it. They once have again a nice collection of lego thanks to charity shops and car boots Grin

Things like lego, brio and playmobil are worth holding on to imo

My DD is 40 this year and DS is 37 and had lots of Lego which they played with when young. It was all saved in a big bag I made and is now being played with by GD'S aged 12 and 9 and then will go up in loft again till DS' little DS who is 8 months old is old enough to play with.

DrHarleenQuinzel · 14/06/2013 16:08

Mum kept all our lego from when we were kids and now DS1 is of an age, he loves to go round there and play with it.
My mind boggles on just how much they must have spent on this stuff! They have an old style lego fort which had been discontinued for about 5 years when my mum brought it for Dbro1 and I've seen one of the castles we had go for £250 on ebay recently. My parents have at least another six of the massive sets plus two boats that were made in the 70's plus two large (think 70 litre) tubs of just bricks and wheels and windows ect. Most of it's from the 90's so not sets you can get anymore.
I'm so so greatful they did keep it all, it's given DS1 so much joy. Mum has said she regretted getting shot of all our rold playmobil and sylvanian families as she thinks DS1 would love them too.
I'd recomend to anayone who has the stuff to keep hold of it if they can.

foreverondiet · 14/06/2013 18:23

I think reasonable request- someone might be finished with it and want to pass it onto a good new home.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 14/06/2013 18:30

But if you don't have a huge loft it's not possible.
I did find it hard to part with the Sylvanian Famies, but, tbh, they weren't played with much - and the teeny tiny bits everywhere!
Likewise the Playmobil - we had loads but I'm sure someone's getti g pleasure from it now, rather than it gathering dust for twenty years.

MrsLouisTheroux · 14/06/2013 19:45

I did. It went on the skip. Didn't even give it away.

Plomino · 14/06/2013 20:01

Oh god the Lego . Boxes and boxes of the stuff . Harry potter , at least two entire Lego cities , planes , trains , boats , coastguard stuff . It's on top of wardrobes , in drawers , on windowsills , everywhere . It's a fit at Christmas who gets to put it together , between DH , my brother , and
DS1 . Hours and hours they all spend on Christmas afternoon , while I drain the sherry bottle and watch an Agatha Christie .

We have an odd house inasmuch as we have two loft spaces . DH's current project is tidying it up so its a usable room . I had dreams of a little 'me' room , with a telly, a comfy sofa and a bookcase. Apparently not . It's going to be the Lego loft.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/06/2013 20:09

I have two crates of the stuff I'd love to pass on but it's all a bit grubby and I don't know how to clean it short of going over it brick by brick with an old toothbrush and I'm not doing that.

DoJo · 14/06/2013 20:23

Stick it in a net bag in the dishwasher (or possibly even washing machine)? I was literally just wondering how I would clean all my old lego when my son is old enough to play with it, and that's what I had decided...!

wigglesrock · 14/06/2013 20:23

Lego , it's a very Mumsnetty toy Smile

I had lots of Lego when I was small, can't say it meant more to me than any other toy I had. Certainly didn't inspire me to hold onto it or to make my Mum keep it incase I had kids.

My kids have some, they like it but much prefer other stuff they have.

Nagoo · 14/06/2013 20:24

I never hoover it up. Nor playmobil. I have a fantasy that I will be able to sit about one day with interested or absent dc and build them all to the instructions again.

Mrsrobertduvall · 14/06/2013 20:26

Mine went when ds was 9.
I haven't kept anytoys...sold all the Brio.

I am not expecting grandchildrenGrin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/06/2013 20:44

I don't have a dishwasher and am worried about fucking up my washing machine. Has anybody tried this method of cleaning?
