To bake bread instead of cakes for the school fair?

Summer fair. They as always want cakes to sell...I am rubbish at cakes but excellent at bread of all types. I wondered if they'd sell though?

I can make cottage loaves, buns, baguette type things and also plaited loaves as well as novelty things like these and these

Would they be any good? Or should I just not bother? If I should, then how shall I present them? In cellophane on little foil trays?

If you are good at breads, what about doing yeasty type cakes? Belgian buns and similar.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 12:46

I've never tried that and don't want to use up time experimenting with things that might not work Clara...plus the ingredients.

Do fancy bread like olive rolls, goats cheese and herb, apricot loaf etc. Good idea!

ubik · 11/06/2013 12:47

Most if the parents at our school wound bite your hand off for homemade bread Grin great idea.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 11/06/2013 12:48

My mum always bakes bread for cake stalls - it is a best seller! Go for it not everyone likes cup cakes, homemade bread is fab!!!

EyesCrossedLegsAkimbo · 11/06/2013 12:48

I'd buy bread before cakes any day.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 12:48

Spoo that's a good idea too...I do a lovely cheese and olive loaf. I will make a number of smaller ones rather than large I think....I would buy bread more than cakes...the cakes are so often covered in sweets which I hate.

No it would be brilliant! Show me a farmer's or general food market that doesn't have a bread stall - people love a nice loaf of fresh bread. Even if it wasn't flavoured I reckon it would sell.

Personally, I like a raisin and walnut.

BabetteAteOatmeal · 11/06/2013 12:49

IME posh bread is always a seller. The ones with seeds, olives or sundried tomatoes go for silly money. Definitely do it!

NeverQuiteSure · 11/06/2013 12:50

Brilliant idea. I'd buy it over cakes.

LookingThroughTheFog · 11/06/2013 13:00

Yep - fab idea!

worsestershiresauce · 11/06/2013 13:10

The home made bread has always sold out really fast on the stalls I've been on. Often to the people running the stall Grin

Most people can knock together a few cupcakes, but very few can bake really good bread.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 13:45

Thanks all. That sounds positive then!

deffo!

Sweet potato bread, fig bread...

PatriciaHolm · 11/06/2013 13:50

loving the mini turtles! I run our PTA fair and would love something like that to turn up!

UniqueAndAmazing · 11/06/2013 13:53

I love the idea of baking bread instead
we have a bread machine and bread made in there is yummy, so I bet proper homemade bread is even better.

If they're cottagey type breads, then they'll go a storm

you can sell them in the wraps you get for cakes - bags that have paper backing with cellophane top

UniqueAndAmazing · 11/06/2013 13:55

ooh, love cheese and olive loaf.

worth listing the ingredients on a little sticker, too, so people know it's not filled with random stuff.
(DD can't have dairy or soya, so we have no choice but to make ours because all shop breads bar 2 have soya flour)

minouminou · 11/06/2013 13:56

hedgehogs, with raisin eyes!
Saffron buns!
Go on, go on, go on.....

dufflefluffle · 11/06/2013 13:57

Cakes and buns will sell better but good breads will go too - especially given that there won't be that many of them and if you're that good then they should go well. IMO if they look good than they will be bought.

BeeMom · 11/06/2013 14:01

I think baking bread is a brilliant idea - everyone will be making cakes and sweets - there are those who don't prefer them and would otherwise likely not get anything.

I am one of those people. I really dislike sweets (as do my DCs, DH has a huge sweet tooth).

However, I LOVE hand made bread. You can "fancy" it up by topping them with lots of different things that will not require any change in your recipe - olives, cheese, sun dried tomatoes, roasted peppers...

I'd suggest presenting them in cellophane with a cute ribbon. I know that if I saw them at a fair, I'd be first in line.

babyicebean · 11/06/2013 14:26

I made rainbow bread for the harvest festival and the kids loved it. We normally have a huge amount of cakes donated and it was nice to have something different

olidusUrsus · 11/06/2013 14:27

No to cellophane! Horrible stuff. Place them all on trays and get some paper bags or just wrap them up in paper. It's nicer to see them all out and the smell will be amazing.

Mintyy · 11/06/2013 14:29

Yanbu. I would buy home made bread at a school fair.

Fakebook · 11/06/2013 14:31

I'd buy the bread too. All those cakes and sweets make me feel sick.

schoolgovernor · 11/06/2013 14:52

I don't buy unwrapped bread in a supermarket, and wouldn't on a stall at a fete, and know a lot of people who feel the same. Unhygenic. Something to consider maybe?
