To bake bread instead of cakes for the school fair?

Summer fair. They as always want cakes to sell...I am rubbish at cakes but excellent at bread of all types. I wondered if they'd sell though?

I can make cottage loaves, buns, baguette type things and also plaited loaves as well as novelty things like these and these

Would they be any good? Or should I just not bother? If I should, then how shall I present them? In cellophane on little foil trays?

good point gov . I do buy unwrapped bread at a supermarket, so it wouldn't bother me :)

MackerelOfFact · 11/06/2013 15:50

That's no different (in hygiene terms, at least) to cakes though, surely schoolgovernor?

I think bread is a great idea, if not full loaves then definitely smaller speciality breads.

Curlew · 11/06/2013 15:51

Interesting. I tried bread on our cake stalls and it didn't sell. I wonder why not.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 15:57

School yes...I mentioned in the OP...should I wrap them in cello? Or in the crinkly bags? I have those...clear ones.

brilliant idea!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 16:05

Curlew were they big loaves or small ones? What style?

Cheese and olive loaf?? Sounds amazing!! Much better than sickly fairy cakes.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 11/06/2013 16:12

I'd buy bread especially if you can guarantee egg and nut free. I struggle to buy at the cake stalls at school as I have to consider DS's allergies.
Definitely do bread, almost everyone uses bread, not everyone likes cakes.

pumpkinsweetie · 11/06/2013 16:20

You could make cinnamon buns, chelsea buns, panettones, iced buns with pink icingSmile. There are lots of nice things you can make which are bread based and the kids will devour.

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 11/06/2013 16:23

I'd buy bread for sure. I love cakes but usually they are sickly, submerged in icing or smarties or whatever (I like icing, smarties etc; but I like to taste cake too!) and so on, and homemade bread would be absolute heaven.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 16:30

Oh great...seems ton be a good response.

Hell yeah, Missus!
Get kneadin'!

TheThinksYouCanThink · 11/06/2013 16:34

The turtles definitely, my DS's would much prefer them to cake!

VerySmallSqueak · 11/06/2013 16:37

I'd definitely buy bread !

OhTheConfusion · 11/06/2013 16:54

You have made me want walnut bread... wish I could be bothered nipping to marks and spencers!

NettoSuperstar · 11/06/2013 17:15

I'd buy bread over cakes any day, I don't have a sweet tooth at all.

Elquota · 11/06/2013 17:40

Sounds good!

HollyBerryBush · 11/06/2013 17:43

I'd buy bread - wouldn't touch cakes though

LastTangoInDevonshire · 11/06/2013 17:53

schoolgovenor - YABU and picky (bread no different to cakes).

OP - hedgehog rolls would be popular with children, I should think.

schoolgovernor · 11/06/2013 17:54

I don't buy unwrapped cakes either. After a couple of hours being breathed, sneezed and leaned over I'd rather leave them on the plate. Yes, I'm picky, but I like food covered. Grin

Yonihadtoask · 11/06/2013 18:35

YANBU

Brillliant idea.

I would love to be able to buy some fancy pants bread rolls at a fair.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/06/2013 18:40

I don't buy unwrapped food either...not ever. I have OCD and am open about that...so people will probably know that the bread has been made in weirdly very clean circumstances.

Scholes34 · 11/06/2013 19:23

I wouldn't buy it. I like my home-made bread fresh out of the oven. Cakes can sit around a little longer than a loaf of bread, and I'd wonder when it had been made. Just a personal thing.

VerySmallSqueak · 11/06/2013 19:28

I would happily buy unwrapped bread just as I buy unwrapped buns and cakes on stalls or in the bakers.

Wrap in a bit of paper for me.

I'd buy plain ordinary bread.

My DD's don't really go a load on cakes.DD1 would definitely go for a nice seedy roll over a cake or biscuit.DD2 would go for a biscuit over a cake or roll.

I do buy the cakes to support the stall but some of the time they're just a gooey mess when I get home - bread would make it home so much better!

Xmasbaby11 · 11/06/2013 19:28

Bread sounds great! There's always too much sweet at those stalls.
