To be fed up with Nintendo?

We have a perfectly good Wii and a ds and a dsi in this house. However loads of their new games are now only for the Wii u or the 3ds.

So of course dd would like new consoles.

I get that technology changes, etc. I just wish they could make their new releases in both versions for a bit longer. Like the next ten years. Grin

I havent bothered with a Nintendo for years and I used to love it (midnight queuer for the Wii) but blummin heck I cant keep up

AKissIsNotAContract · 10/06/2013 21:07

It was the same when the SNES came out.

StuntGirl · 10/06/2013 21:10

The consoles have had 7 and 9 year lifespans. Pretty standard. Your problem was buying the mid-lifecycle release with the DSi!

VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2013 21:11

I know.....it's just so much bloody money.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2013 21:36

The WiiU came out last year.

The Wii came out in 2006. So it got 6 years before the next console. Thats actually a decent run compared to its predecessors.

The Gamecube came out in 2002. (4 years gap)
The Nintendo 64 came out in 1997. (5 year gap)
The Super Nintendo came out in 1992. (5 year gap)
The NES came out in 1986. (6 year gap)

So are YABU?

Yes, because given the previous history you could work out roughy how long you would have with the machine.

And just because they don't have the current system doesn't mean they won't use the old system. You need to introduce your children to the concept of 'classic gaming'. There is a big market for old 'classic' consoles and games. Wink

VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2013 21:42

I think I might agree to the 3ds but leave the wii u.

I've found some pre owned 3ds from Game, are they generally ok?

StuntGirl · 10/06/2013 21:50

Console or games? Both should be fine, they're checked and have the same guarantee as new ones. If you're buying the console ask to look at it yourself rather than just taking what you're given. But don't expect it to be mint quality for pre owned price ;)

SamuelWestsMistress · 10/06/2013 21:51

I fired up my n64 the other day for the first time in about 10 years. It worked a treat! Had to rake out the old TV set though. God only knows how you are supposed to attach it to these new digital things. And that there sentence just makes me realise that at 34 I'm an old trout...

Also. DD lost twoDS games about three months ago. I was furious with her as it was my DS that I had lent her.(she is 5).

Low and behold they turn up having been dropped outside next to the shed. The colour has faded from the front of them and they have been covered in snow, rain and left exposed to direct sunlight. To my absolute and utter astonishment they BOTH still work! I couldn't believe it.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2013 21:58

It's a console, online. I don't mind the case been not 100% but wouldn't want little scratches on the screen. But the website says they're restored to as good as new....so I guess if it isn't I can return it?

This annoys me too, especially with the 3ds. I don't like the idea of my kids using the 3ds as I have heard people complain that it gives them headaches. Even the advert says that the 3ds isn't suitable for under 7s.

ThereAreEggsInMyViolin · 10/06/2013 22:10

My DCs ages from 16 to 22 and I still regularly play the N64, mostly Bomberman and some of the early MarioPartys. My eldest and I like to play the original Tetris which he first played when he was about 4 Grin he is at Uni now.
We also play lots of games on the Gamecube and Wii.

The original SuperMario is amazing.

OP you should be getting your DC to look at the older technology and not worry about the newer stuff.
I bought my first gameboy in 1989 and we have bought almost every new model.

I LOVE Nintendo

VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2013 22:13

I've got a GameCube in the cupboard. It's just that dd sees the adverts on tv for the new games which won't work on her current consoles. She's really keen for the new animal crossing game.

Pre owned games are fine.

My DP works at Blockbuster (one of the ones that has stayed open) and he comes home with pre owned games all the time.

Wiifitmama · 10/06/2013 22:25

My eldest ds has a dslite that he bought two Christmases ago. He chose it specifically because it cold play his old gameboy games. My middle ds has his birthday tomorrow and we have bought him a dslite as well. For much the same reason. We also have a Wii which we still love (though it finally bit the dust and got sent back to Nintendo today for repair (at their own expense - love Nintendo!) you can still buy some games new for the ds. I just bought the Pokemon Heart of Gold game with pedometer for my eldest's upcoming birthday. I like that my kids don't always want the newest thing.

NicknameIncomplete · 10/06/2013 22:31

It isnt just nintendo who do things like this.
The new xbox cant play games from the other older xboxes.

Its all about the money, money, money Grin

Patchouli · 10/06/2013 22:35

I know, I'm with you.
And that little Animal Crossing character is swimming in the sea! My DD's on about it too.

Fleurdebleurgh · 10/06/2013 22:36

YABU for saying anything negative about Nintendo, ever.

GalaxyDefender · 10/06/2013 22:37

Goldendandelion - the 3D on the 3DS shouldn't be used by young children. You can set it up using parental controls with a pin so that the 3D doesn't work, iirc. (I never use the 3D on mine, it doesn't work with my wonky eyes and just gives me a headache!)

OP, you're kind of not being U. Unless you care about the console market, you're not likely to know much about the average generation cycle, and it will seem short to a lot of people. Ironically, this gen has been one of the longest! But YABU to hate Nintendo. They are far, far better than most other companies in the industry, particularly when it comes to customer service.

If you get your DD a 3DS, do get her Animal Crossing. I'm getting my copy on Friday, and as I can't have any more new games until next year I'm hoping it will last me that long with the sheer amount of stuff there is to do Grin

StuntGirl · 10/06/2013 22:46

I've upgraded my DS Lite to a 3DS this week just so I can play Animal Crossing Grin

It may have some small cosmetic scratches on the screen, ( but nothing that would stop the touch screen functionality working) although equally it may not. Thems the breaks with preowned consoles.

You can send it back but it'd cost you postage. If you're at all fussy about the quality you're probably best off going in store and picking one yourself.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2013 22:50

Right have been reading reviews and am going to get her a 3ds xl, apparently the 3d is less of an eye strain on the bigger screen.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 10/06/2013 22:51

I'm hoping animal crossing keeps her busy all summer holiday!

OP posts:
JoyMachine · 10/06/2013 23:01

Ha- we regularly play N64 and even SNES!
At least Nintendo consoles allow you to play older games on the newer console.

StuntGirl · 11/06/2013 00:02

There's even an animal crossing 3DS XL... ;)

Goldendandelion · 11/06/2013 12:00

Thank you. That's helpful to know.
