to not understand holidays where you just sit by the pool every single day?

Now I get that a holiday is about doing exactly what you want to do and to basically relax.

But I just don't get people who go to a different country and sit by a pool all day every day. My friend just came back from 2 weeks away, I asked her if left the hotel at all and she just looked at me blankly and said no.

I love relaxing by the pool, but I also love going to a different country and actually seeing that country - if I'm by a pool in a hotel I might as well be anywhere.

I guess it's like going to Egypt and only living within the walls of the hotel and never seeing the Pyramids.

She didn't even go to a beach ... meh, I know it's her holiday but yeah I just don't get it.

I don't get it either. On another thread people explained that they want to recharge their batteries/do nothing/escape from stressful jobs and I get it now.

Wouldn't be for me but my friend loves it.

Buzzardbird · 09/06/2013 19:30

Its each to their own I guess? In our case it is less people at the places we want to visit.

Chottie · 09/06/2013 19:31

It's not for me either, but we are all different Smile

I love exploring new cities and visiting new places

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 09/06/2013 19:32

I love just lazing around the pool but I like going for a nosey around too.

I actually like going and looking around Supermarkets to see what food they have over there Blush

Lifeisontheup · 09/06/2013 19:32

No I don't get it either, it seems a waste of money especially if you go to somewhere that is not just designed for tourists. Each to their own though I suppose.

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 19:33

It was also pointed out that some are are lucky enough to have multiple holidays a year the lying by the pool one could be the relaxing one, then trekking in the Himalayas could be the other one. Grin

Yonionekanobe · 09/06/2013 19:33

I never did, DH and I always have very busy holidays and spent our honeymoon backpacking for a year.

Then I had a very stressful full time job and and 18 month old and found a week sitting by a pool/beach with DD and DH, only leaving the resort for a few early morning runs was HEAVENLY. I certainly wouldn't want to do it for every holiday but once a year I could sign up to.

SirChenjin · 09/06/2013 19:34

No, I don't get it - but then I don't get holidays where you just go and lie on a beach all day either, we'd be bored rigid by about day 2.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 09/06/2013 19:34

Sit by the pool?

You mean not only did she not do any sightseeing or exploring at all, she didn't even swim?

OwlinaTree · 09/06/2013 19:34

I like to do this and I like to explore.

Don't understand going somewhere far flung and seeing nothing. If you just want sun and pool you don't need to go all the way to Bali (unless it's winter in uk of course!)

Each to their own tho.

Yonionekanobe · 09/06/2013 19:34

I suppose that is us sparkling Blush

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 19:35

SPs i love a good poke round a foreign supermarket. Grin I took a suitcase full of nappies to Portugal and guess what? They sold Pampers in the local Spar equivalent. Hmm

TigOldBitties · 09/06/2013 19:35

You don't need to understand them.

I don't understand dogging.

Some people get pleasure and enjoyment from it and it does you no harm so what's it to you?

choceyes · 09/06/2013 19:35

I'd be bored within a day of being by a pool. So it's not for me either. I love exploring. My ideal would be to explore during the day and then relax from early evening.

Northey · 09/06/2013 19:35

I never got it until I had a couple of very stressful years, and was so fraught and exhausted that an "interesting" holiday of the sort I'd normally have had just wouldn't have returned me to work feeling rested and refreshed in a way I needed. It would have distracted me rather than restored me, if you see what I mean.

Picturepuncture · 09/06/2013 19:36

I like a balance, some exploring holidays some lazy ones. Both are brilliant options!

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 19:36

Don't be Blush Yoni, I may feel the same if I had a stressful full time job.

MeetMeinBaaBar · 09/06/2013 19:36

I love just lazing around the pool but I like going for a nosey around too.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up for me too.

I do get the whole wanting to recharge your batteries, but if I was going away for 14 days .... I could spend 10 days recharging and 4 days seeing the actual country.

Where did your friend go and what sort of hotel was it?

I have been to hotels with the following within the complex: aqua parks, museums, riding stables, dive pools, top roping and abseiling, wave pools and ice rinks! (Not all the same hotel, obviously Grin)

I guess it's like going to Egypt and only living within the walls of the hotel and never seeing the Pyramids Do you understand how big Egypt is and how long it would take to get to the Pyramids from the major holiday resorts?

choceyes · 09/06/2013 19:37

Oh yes I love going to foreign supermarkets!

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 09/06/2013 19:37

Sparkling I like to find funny names. Like Bimbo. That had me laughing.

Mappa · 09/06/2013 19:37

I'm fortunate enough to have a couple of holidays a year. And I love exploring places wherever and whenever,..but every now and again there's nothing quite like a couple of days where the agenda is...nothing!

lubeybooby · 09/06/2013 19:38

I love lazy holidays that are just all about cocktails, tanning and the odd swim. I only do a little bit of sightseeing especially if only there for a week. A bit more if it's two weeks. But definitely way more lazy time than off out and about.

StuntGirl · 09/06/2013 19:38

But I can't sunbathe by a pool anywhere but abroad...so why shouldn't I go abroad to do that?

MeetMeinBaaBar · 09/06/2013 19:39

You mean not only did she not do any sightseeing or exploring at all, she didn't even swim?

Erm ... I guess she probably did swim. But I've been on holiday with her before and she's so determined to get a tan that she would probably spend 5 minutes in the pool just to cool down and then go back to sunbathing.
