to not understand holidays where you just sit by the pool every single day?

Now I get that a holiday is about doing exactly what you want to do and to basically relax.

But I just don't get people who go to a different country and sit by a pool all day every day. My friend just came back from 2 weeks away, I asked her if left the hotel at all and she just looked at me blankly and said no.

I love relaxing by the pool, but I also love going to a different country and actually seeing that country - if I'm by a pool in a hotel I might as well be anywhere.

I guess it's like going to Egypt and only living within the walls of the hotel and never seeing the Pyramids.

She didn't even go to a beach ... meh, I know it's her holiday but yeah I just don't get it.

Meddie, Cuba can be very dangerous for tourists - when we went we were advised not to go ANYWHERE alone, but let the hotel find and book your guides. We did to to Havana, but that was an organised trip. One chap we befriended was mugged when he went off fishing and another couple were 'held to ransom' by a non-registered taxi driver who tripled the cost of their journey then drove them off into the centre of the village (with bullet ridden walls) when they refused to pay. Admittedly this was some years ago and it may be very different now.

Personally I would rather go to work for two weeks than face the boredom of sitting around a pool all day or sunbathing on the beach all day. It'd get me really cross to be so inactive!
But I don't knock anyone else who does want to do that.

I would find it's enough of a relax to have no chores to do freeing me up to go and explore or try a new sport.

middleagedspread · 09/06/2013 20:48

But wouldn't it be relaxing to be on a white sandy beach, with a comfy lounger, a big brolly & a pile of books? I'm going for a dip in a minute & might do a bit of sailing later. Can't decide where to eat tonight..

Instead endless washing, ironing, cajoling children, work, gardening blah blah.

It's lovely to escape real life now & again.
sigh

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2013 20:48

Oh no LtEve your DH is too sociable. Grin have you ever made friends with people on holiday and met up with them again once home?

I know a couple who ended up inviting two people they met on holiday to their wedding. Confused

I like chatting to people on holiday but DH gets humphy and tells me off for 'gassing'. Grin

LtEveDallas I spent 4 lovely days with the DC in Havana wandering around and going on trips, I was never told not to go out alone.

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/06/2013 20:54

I get it.

It takes me about 8 days or so to warm the chill from my bones and get an even enough tan to risk going somewhere where I'll have to wear more than a bikini. Otherwise forget it, - another miserable year of being a pale acne-ridden, vit-D deficient misery-guts.

Whilst it's true you could be in any country, the whole point is that that country isn't miserable, cold, rainy England.

I loved Cuba when I went (a year ago) and felt very safe. I didn't stay in a hotel and went off exploring in loads of places. Loved it, would love to go back one day.

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/06/2013 20:58

Oops Blush

MoreBeta · 09/06/2013 20:58

Nope.

I just dont' get laying by a pool for a week. I don't mind for a few days but then I am just bored and start thinking about the hell of flying back home and traversing the airport check in and security.

I get back and just think....why did we do that. The I work out how much it al lcost and think WHY did we do that!!!??

DW loves it though.

So I stay quiet and just try not to make everyone else miserable.

FreudiansSlipper · 09/06/2013 20:59

I do not get it either

I like to get out and look around I start feeling trapped and do not really like all inclusive hotels or large holiday resorts

CoffeeOne · 09/06/2013 21:06

I love it. The reason we go abroad to do it is that we don't get the weather here!

A bit of lounging, a bit of reading, a bit of swimming, a bit of walking around the town, lots of eating and drinking. Perfect.

BarredfromhavingStella · 09/06/2013 21:06

If we had glorious HOT sunshiny days in the UK I'd stay here & laze around a pool-we don't so I go abroad & do it.

BarredfromhavingStella · 09/06/2013 21:09

Oh & as for Cuba, stunning country with the most friendly people I have ever met-we got married there & I have the biggest soft spot for the place Grin (we did do the real tourist things prior to DC...)

FrantasticO · 09/06/2013 21:10

I Love a pool holiday!
Happy kids, happy parents!

Few bike rides, a stroll along the beach, out for dinner each night...what's not to love?

Lots of sightseeing with children in tow in the heat...I will pass!
But fair play to those who enjoy that.

Each to their own Grin

VerySmallSqueak · 09/06/2013 21:12

MoreBeta can't you go for a wander and leave DW sunning?

Last time I went on proper holiday with DH (pre DC) I had usually been for a walk around, and to a cafe for breakfast before he even got out of bed.

hermioneweasley · 09/06/2013 21:13

Oh god, I miss sitting by the pool reading a book so much! I might actually cry. I work full time and the bastard kids want my attention on holiday. I just want a margarita. (disclaimer - joking. A bit)

teacherandguideleader · 09/06/2013 21:15

BF and I are both incredibly busy and never get a chance to relax. I get away plenty with Guides and on school trips and get to do 'sight seeing'. When we go for our summer holiday, our main objective is to relax. To BF, relaxing essentially means sleeping while I like to read or listen to my ipod. We have a lovely holiday just chilling out (something we don't do at home) around the pool, going out in the evening for dinner. It surprises my friends that I enjoy this as I'm usually so active.

Sleep404 · 09/06/2013 21:20

I don't get it either, but I'm guessing its for the sun. The one I really really don't get is people who go away on holiday and spend the day sleeping and the nights drinking in bars. Why pay all that money for something you can quite easily do here?

LtEveDallas · 09/06/2013 21:20

Sparkling, when we went to Cuba we ended up being witnesses to a young couple getting married and went to their wedding party in Essex when we got back.

When we went on Honeymoon to Mexico we got friendly with another honeymooning couple. Coincidentally the lad's father was also in the Army - and 4 months later DH met him in Iraq! I kept in touch with the girl by email when we got back. Even more coincidentally she also had a honeymoon baby, that she had (a girl) the day after DD was due! We lost touch just a couple of years ago.

Oh and last year we swapped addresses with a family we met in Egypt. The day we got back the wife had sent a Sainsburys Delivery to our address!

This is all down to DH - I'm an unsociable bugger!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 09/06/2013 21:25

God no, I'd be bored.

I like a day sitting by the pool but the next day I have to go explore, then spend a day at the beach, explore again.

We purposefully didn't choose the Maldives or similar for our honeymoon as I would be totally bored sitting on a beach and going snorkelling every single day.
