AIBU to ask why a cup of tea is supposed to make everything seem better? (a lighthearted AIBU)

I've had a rough couple of weeks and while at DH's parents I was talking to MIL about the situation and how stressed out it's made me. She said she had the perfect remedy - a nice cup of tea. 'It makes everything seem better."

It just made me chuckle because I hear that expression often - TV being one.

Anyone else hear the expression much? I wish it were bloody true. Wink

It gives you something to do, it's warm and comforting, and it encourages a sit down and a chat. When you can't do anything to help with the real problem, it can still be a bit soothing.

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 07/06/2013 11:01

Only hot drink to make things better is JD in a coffee Grin

MisselthwaiteManor · 07/06/2013 11:03

It is true. It's warm and gives you a little caffeine boost.

MolotovCocktail · 07/06/2013 11:04

Tea is the answer.

Or, if its a bigger problem: gin Grin

Latara · 07/06/2013 11:06

I think it's true; just the ritual of tea-making, sitting and chatting over a hot Brew can make a person relax.

Tea is relaxing yet gives a caffeine boost, with a bit of sugar it can boost blood sugar levels too.

ThingummyBob · 07/06/2013 11:09

YABU.

It just does Grin

TakingTimeOut · 07/06/2013 11:10

I was never one for sugar in tea or coffee until MIL made me one without realising as everyone else in the household has it. I can't drink one myself now without it in. Shame really because I went for years without it. Now it tastes vile without. I'm quite partial to a black coffee

It is something for somebody to do it is soothing to people who are in a crisis , even if its for a few minutes they sit and relax just for a minute or 2,

Elquota · 07/06/2013 11:27

It's the caffeine.

chocoluvva · 07/06/2013 11:30

And the theamine - you can buy it in capsules - helps you to focus calmly. Apparently.

OHforDUCKScake · 07/06/2013 11:34

My mums is 'a nice hot bath'

Imo both can work. But never at the same time.

wonderingsoul · 07/06/2013 11:57

i think the suger helps for shock,... along with actually sitting down.

though i normally drink coffee standing up in the kitchien Hmm

its a british thing i think

i read in a paper that shall not be named that tea was taking over America.... i just thought it..." what... sinice when did people in america not drink tea?..or are they seeing it as a "fashion " thing and trying to be all classy and stiff upper lipped?

KatyTheCleaningLady · 07/06/2013 12:45

Hot tea in America wasn't a big thing. But, when they can experience good tea, like you can buy in Chinese shops, they naturally enjoy it.

Iced tea is delicious. I think I'll make some while the weather is warm. Grin

wigglesrock · 07/06/2013 12:54

I find its the sneaky smoke you have with the tea that makes everything better Wink

MaxPepsi · 07/06/2013 13:13

I am a non tea drinker but offer said drink for other people.

For me, it's a good bar of chocolate, a blanket and a 'crap' film I can cry at. And if i'm really low a bottle of wine too.

If I can cry over something else that makes it all seem better Grin

SybilRamkin · 07/06/2013 13:18

Ooh, yes, a nice cup of tea and a sit down. Possibly even a biscuit.

Think I'll have one now!

BackforGood · 07/06/2013 13:22

Because it does

WildlingPrincess · 07/06/2013 13:27

A cup of tea does make everything better. I stick famous grouse in mine Grin

DontSweatTheSmallStuff · 07/06/2013 13:33

Because it makes you sit down/slow down/relax and stop rushing round flapping like a headless chicken.

......Or is that just me?

WireCatWhore · 07/06/2013 13:47

I hate tea.

Give me wine or vodka! Wink

When my dd and her school were involved in a widely reported trauma we had to fight our way through the press surrounded by police officers.

At the school we were met by about a dozen women who had laid a table in the hall for afternoon tea/ coffee and biscuits.

It somehow made this terrible thing almost bearable like the war spirit. Can't explain but the ritual of hushed but friendly voices passing you a cup of tea with a pat in the hand from total strangers helped enormously.

MadBusLady · 07/06/2013 13:56

During the London riots a lot of people were tweeting "everybody calm down and go home" type messages tagged #operationcupoftea and it was nice when the Met twitter account joined in.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/06/2013 14:58

I worked for SS in the UK. I have now moved to Canada. I am at a complete loss now what the first thing to do is when someone tells you something awful. In the UK, if you know they need a moment to cry/breathe/compose themselves, you make tea. Simple. Here? Goodness knows... Coffee and a joint?

LifeOfPee · 07/06/2013 15:06

It's cultural, familiar and comforting. You also often get a biscuit or a bit of cake with a cuppa so it's a treat too.
