AIBU to ask why a cup of tea is supposed to make everything seem better? (a lighthearted AIBU)

I've had a rough couple of weeks and while at DH's parents I was talking to MIL about the situation and how stressed out it's made me. She said she had the perfect remedy - a nice cup of tea. 'It makes everything seem better."

It just made me chuckle because I hear that expression often - TV being one.

Anyone else hear the expression much? I wish it were bloody true. Wink

All from my DM...

If it's hot: "Have a cup of tea, it'll cool you down."
If it's cold: "Have a cup of tea, it'll warm you up."
If you're upset: "Have a cup of tea, it'll cheer you up."
If you're annoyed: "Have a cup of tea, it'll calm you down."

It's always a 'nice' cup of tea too, never a horrible one! Grin

I've not drunk tea for 13 years!

SquinkiesRule · 07/06/2013 16:09

Dh says it's like a hug in a cup. When he's having a bad day I make endless cups of tea. Grin

sue52 · 07/06/2013 16:10

Nice cup of tea in the daytime, nice gin and tonic after sundown. They both give life a more rosy glow. I'm not fussed about cake or biscuits.

pigletmania · 07/06/2013 16:10

It just does, it has magical healing properties Smile

TSSDNCOP · 07/06/2013 16:23

Error if I didn't know for certain I'm not, I'd say that I was your DM Grin

Startail · 07/06/2013 16:48

Much better, DD1 has gone to make tea and stopped talking over the tennis Grin

bootsycollins · 07/06/2013 16:55

I know a 95 year old WW2 veteran and he said that the first thing they used to do when setting up a new camp was brew up "aaaaah tea, the staff of life"

badtime · 07/06/2013 16:55

Traditionally it was hot, sweet tea. You have a moment of calm and a bit of a boost to your blood sugar (as low blood sugar makes many people act erratically). Also, biscuits!

I loved the story recently about a mosque in York inviting EDL demonstrators in for tea and biscuits. That is an England worth defending.

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 07/06/2013 16:59

I like tea but I admit that I find hot chocolate is my calming down/cheering up remedy.

VerySmallSqueak · 07/06/2013 17:00

I think for a calm down it has to be a real brew of builders tea and done in the most proper way with a teapot.

Absolutely agree badtime.

perplexedpirate · 07/06/2013 17:04

Aaahhh, badtime your post made me a bit misty-eyed there! Totally agree.
I shall have a cup of tea to celebrate England in all it's glorious diversity. Smile

MrsLyman · 07/06/2013 17:07

What most people have already said, but also I think when someone makes you one when you're having a hardtime, it's a demonstration of someone saying 'I care and I want to make you feel better even if ultimately I can't actually make your problems/ hurt/ stress disappear.'

MadBusLady · 07/06/2013 18:24

Do you know I think this is the first "light hearted AIBU" I've ever seen that somebody hasn't misinterpreted and turned into a bunfight? Well done OP! See? It's the magic properties of Brew

MadBusLady · 07/06/2013 18:28

Also, I have heard tell that in yon America they don't really use electric kettles much and this is one reason why they only have 110v mains and not 240v like in Britain. Can anyone confirm this?

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 07/06/2013 18:34

MrsLyman Was just coming on to post that - it's the fact that someone cares for you.
Be it my DP, who keeps me well supplied day-to-day, or, like further up the thread, complete strangers in crisis situations.

SquinkiesRule · 07/06/2013 22:48

They do have 110 mains you are right Madbus. I doubt it's to do with electric kettles, it's been this way always, so before electric kettles were about. We have a nice Electric one, takes twice as long to come to the boil as in UK.
They can't make tea here, it comes to you luke warm with that nasty film on the top in restaurants, so I only drink it at home.
I have friend who will bung a mug of water in the microwave and drop a tea bag in if you sat yes to a cuppa

wamabama · 07/06/2013 23:34

Yeah I've noticed on various American TV programmes, mainly The Mentalist, they don't use electrical kettles.

My nan's life revolves around 'hot cups of sweet tea' Grin. Everything can be made better by tea. I know that tea does have a natural calming effect on the body so it isn't just in the mind, plus it's partly the fact we link tea with being relaxing and we generally sit down for a while to relax and drink it.

Montybojangles · 08/06/2013 00:17

I have a mug with this on it :)

Jan49 · 08/06/2013 00:21

I think it's for when you're distressed and someone is offering to sit down with you and talk to you or let you talk, so first of all they make a cup of tea and then you sit down and share your troubles over a cup of tea.

But I drink tea because I like it when I'm thirsty and not for comfort.

Morloth · 08/06/2013 00:32

I don't know why it works but it does.

You can always tell when the stress level is high at my work because the tea gets used up fast.

When soneone is upset in my house I make tea and sit at the table.
