to do my garden in the evening?

I hate gardening and I especially hate doing it at the weekend, when I prefer to be out with the dogs or curled up on the settee with a book and wine

So I decided that DH and I would start doing the garden in the evenings after work rather than sacrifice time during the weekend.

Last night, we did the front garden between 5.30 and 6pm (very very small front garden). Then we had some food and did the back between 6.45 and 7.45. I did the mowing first, so finished that at about 7 so that I wasn't disturbing people's evenings with my mower. Then from 7-7.45, we did the quiet shit like edging, weeding and clearing up.

When I was just finishing up with mowing, the gentleman who lives next door came out and gave me a right earful about being anti-social and too noisy. He's right moany bugger so I didn't pay too much attention.

But I don't think 6.45-7 is unreasonable and anti-social to mow your grass is it? Or is it?

of course not! Ignore.

DeepRedBetty · 05/06/2013 09:58

Actually I'd be a bit pissed off if next door started mowing at that time of the evening. It would interrupt my Pinot Grigio time!

FrustratedSycamoresRocks · 05/06/2013 09:58

I don't think so. Hmm I do mine in the evening, but I'm prone to sunstroke and lobsterfication. No-one has ever said anything to us. But we have (not immediate) neighbours who have late bbqs.

ParadiseChick · 05/06/2013 09:58

Yanbu, he's an arsehole!

mrsyattering · 05/06/2013 09:59

I have 2 small children and I think mowing up until 7pm is acceptable, I had one neighbour mowing out the back, under my kids bedroom window at 830pm. I was a little bit peeved Hmm

Frostybean · 05/06/2013 10:00

No, I don't think it's unreasonable - I do the same! I make sure I stop mowing or using other equipment (strimmer, hedge cutter etc.) by 7.00 pm as one set of neighbours have two small children (aged around 6 and 7) so I don't want to disturb them at bedtime. I prefer not to waste the weekend gardening too and as I only use the mower/strimmer/hedge cutter once a month, I don't think one day a month in the summer is unreasonable. I work during the week and don't get home until 5.30 pm so can't do it during the day.
Did your neighbour say what he thought was reasonable or did he just have a negative rant? Does he do this with all the neighbours? When does he do his 'noisy' activities?

ladymariner · 05/06/2013 10:00

YANBU, that's a perfectly acceptable time to do the garden, just ignore him x

Jojay · 05/06/2013 10:01

YANBU, ignore him. 7 pm is a perfectly acceptable time to be mowing.

GemmaTeller · 05/06/2013 10:01

We get all the sun on the front so quite often is too hot to mow till early evening.

Can't see a problem with mowing at 7pm.

HumphreyCobbler · 05/06/2013 10:01

YANBU. Perfectly normal behaviour.

ladymariner · 05/06/2013 10:02

You did nothing wrong, ignore him.

MisselthwaiteManor · 05/06/2013 10:10

That wouldn't bother me at all. In fact can I swap you for my neighbours? They sit in their garden until 10pm drinking and screeching and shouting. Thats what antisocial sounds like.

PostBellumBugsy · 05/06/2013 10:15

At this time of year loads of people do their gardens in the evening. For those of us who enjoy gardening, that is what is great about the summer!

Your neighbour is definitely being very unreasonable.

OctopusWrangler · 05/06/2013 10:25

It's a perfectly sensible plan. Ignore the moaning minnie next door.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 05/06/2013 10:25

Can you swap with my neighbour who was burning garden waste (and god knows what else - it stunk!) all day and only stopped burning stuff at 11:30pm on Monday? It was a really hot day here and I couldn't open the windows due to the amount of smoke billowing from his fire.
DS couldn't play out after school because the smoke could have triggered his asthma.
I would say as long as the mower is away by 7:30pm you are fine.

Montybojangles · 05/06/2013 10:31

I mowed lawn 6:30-7pm yesterday. Sun is too hot earlier in the day for me. I would say anything before 8pm would be ok. Would probably say a little earlier if I had neighbours with very small children.

Sparrowlegs248 · 05/06/2013 10:33

YANBU - i work full time as does dh. Neither of us get home before 6.30 in general. We tend to mow at weekends but would mow in the evening if need be. Next door but one in one direction regularly uses electric saw to chop wood, old furniture up etc. Up til 10.30pm sometime. They have older primary school kids. 4 doors away other way have three kids, youngest about 4, and are often to be heard shouting loudly and swearing often until 9pm. So i don't mind mowing til 8!

OhTheConfusion · 05/06/2013 10:36

UANBU. I have small children and don't see a problem with mowing grass, using strimmer etc before 7.30pm.

OhTheConfusion · 05/06/2013 10:37

YANBU even... one slip of a finger and I am into U for YOU!

MarianForrester · 05/06/2013 10:38

YADNBU. Perfectly reasonable gardening time.

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 10:39

We always garden in the evening. We even have late bbqs or light the chimnea. IGNORE.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 05/06/2013 10:41

YANBU we don't garden in the evening because we'd get eaten alive by bugs but its a lovely relaxing time to be out in the garden. Where we live in France you are not allowed to mow on a Sunday. Harsh.

superfluouscurves · 05/06/2013 10:42

Bye-laws where I live (abroad) are that you can make a noise from 7 am until 7.30 pm in the evening on weekdays and Saturdays. And no noise at all on Sundays. Works really well generally (you get used to not being able to mow on Sunday!)

cantspel · 05/06/2013 10:43

They would hate me then as i mow any time between 8am and 9 pm and it takes a lot longer than 20 minutes.

Snowflakepie · 05/06/2013 10:44

7pm is completely acceptable. Burning garden waste all day when the council tip is only 200 ft along the road is not. Enjoy your gardening, stuff the miserable old codger.
