to do my garden in the evening?

I hate gardening and I especially hate doing it at the weekend, when I prefer to be out with the dogs or curled up on the settee with a book and wine

So I decided that DH and I would start doing the garden in the evenings after work rather than sacrifice time during the weekend.

Last night, we did the front garden between 5.30 and 6pm (very very small front garden). Then we had some food and did the back between 6.45 and 7.45. I did the mowing first, so finished that at about 7 so that I wasn't disturbing people's evenings with my mower. Then from 7-7.45, we did the quiet shit like edging, weeding and clearing up.

When I was just finishing up with mowing, the gentleman who lives next door came out and gave me a right earful about being anti-social and too noisy. He's right moany bugger so I didn't pay too much attention.

But I don't think 6.45-7 is unreasonable and anti-social to mow your grass is it? Or is it?

You should have thanked him profusely for offering to cut your lawn and do the weeding for you,at a more reasonable time, gushing at him for being so understanding of how busy life can be when you have children, and how kind he was. Grin

I have a small child and would not be bothered by someone mowing up until 7pm. No problem with any quiet gardening after that time.

I'm contemplating going out and doing some trimming later on, when DD's asleep actually. Though it'll be back-breaking cutting with shears because a)it'll be too late to use a strimmer and b) the strimmer is broken anyway.

Our DD is 23 months old & DH mows the lawn AFTER she's gone to bed so he can play with her when he gets home from work rather than do chores. Doesn't bother her at all. In fact we hear lawn mowers early evening regularly. You're taking pride (albeit grudgingly!!) in your garden. He sounds like a moaner. Ignore.

Elquota · 05/06/2013 19:35

I reckon the evening starts about 6pm so would rather not hear mowers after then - sorry OP.

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 19:44

Anything before 9 pm is fair game in the summer imo,a mower is unlikely to stop anyone from sleeping and its not like it's loud music. At least with a mower you know out still only last ten mins or so.

Yanbu
I have small children, mowing up to 7:30 is fine, weeding and the like isn't particularly noisy...is it?

He sounds like a delight Wink

Binkybix · 05/06/2013 19:50

Perfectly reasonable time to mow :)

giantpurplepeopleeater · 05/06/2013 19:52

YANBU.

Guy next door to me does his in the evening - but more like between 7 and 8. It's loud enough so I notice, but not so that I would care.

I think the council noise people would only be bothered if you were doing it much later.

Ignore the swine. Sounds like he would find something to moan about regardless.

KatieScarlett2833 · 05/06/2013 19:54

I find lawn mower sounds soothing.

valiumredhead · 05/06/2013 20:18

No, it's not a nasty sound, is it?

MintyChops · 05/06/2013 22:58

Your neighbour is an arse! Check out the Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds on utube for a specific reference to the "drone of lawnmowers" being a traditional sound of the English summer (sorry can't do a link for some reason)

Maternitygold · 05/06/2013 23:03

Ignore him!
