My first AIBU - I have used advanced search and can't see an existing post on this so apologies if there is. I don't want to link to DM so please just google "Female Doctor Who" to look at the recent articles about this in the DM and newspapers.

It seems that it is a possibility and I can't understand why anyone would think this is a bad idea. AIBU?

Kim, well then the doctor can't be a woman, because the tardis is blue!

No, doesn't work- there was a time when his race didn't have time travel. Sorry! And he actually stole his TARDIS- so he even existed before he had the TARDIS.

The TARDIS is alive though.

This is the most mysterious thing about the thread- I have discovered that some people in the mists of time apparently hated Voyager. It's got Tuvok in it! How can you not like Voyager?

Paris always did it for me! Grin

SmileItsSunny · 05/06/2013 17:42

Well, I second whoever suggested upthread, Miranda Hart as the next Dr Who Smile

piprabbit · 05/06/2013 17:52

Ideally the Dr needs to be fanciable. As I have a raging crush on River Song (no way was the Dr good enough for her to waste her life on), I can happily envisage a similarly compelling female Dr. But they will have to find the right actress.

garlicgrump · 05/06/2013 17:55

Oh, I have a mega-crush on her, too, pip!

I'm sure i should have been gay.

TheRealFellatio · 05/06/2013 17:56

The next Doctor should be female, or black or both. Helen Mirren would be ace.

2rebecca · 05/06/2013 17:57

Def NOT Miranda Hart. The doctor is supposed to be calm and intelligent not clumsy and ditsy. it would be like having Mr Bean playing the doctor. I find Matt thingy a bit flappy at times, Miranda would be unbearable.

SolidGoldBrass · 05/06/2013 18:01

What is also interesting is that the pool of female actors who could play (or are associated with playing) characters who are intelligent, reckless, charming, protective and powerful is actually fairly small. Female actors are either 'pretty' or victims, or comic relief.

TheRealFellatio · 05/06/2013 18:02

Alan Rickman. Not that he'd do it.

TheBigJessie · 05/06/2013 18:03

Tuvok, Chakotay, Janeway, annoying Neelix, the EMH, B'lanna Torres (who was more consistently written as a person, not a generic Klingon, unlike Alexander Son of Worf who got ret-conned all over the place Grin )

Neelix: "I don't have anything to teach a daughter"
Tuvok: "Why would it be any different from what you would teach a son?"

Snog · 05/06/2013 18:10

The next doctor definitely needs to be female
Will give the show a whole new lease of life and dimension of interest
Thought Matt Smith was a big mistake of casting

HerRoyalNotness · 05/06/2013 18:17

I've haven't read through the thread, so someone may have mentioned this.

However, I think the current sidekick will become the Doctor. The Doctor doesn't understand where she came from and she has been in many of the time zones they travel to. Bewilderingly. I think she is a Time Lord and will take over. I suspect the Daily Mail article was to canvass popular opinion before the change takes place.

So if The Doctor is a female next, which gender will the sidekick be?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/06/2013 18:17

The Doctor regenerates - all his cells become new again, but he is still the same person, and I don't believe he could transform into a woman - nor couple he become a different species. It would mean changing his DNA (or whatever Timelords have).

HerRoyalNotness · 05/06/2013 18:21

I think he can . He regenerates his thoughts, memories and experiences, skills etc... This could just as easily be contained in a female form as a male.

TheBigJessie · 05/06/2013 18:37

HerRoyalNotness you didn't see the latest episode did you? Clara is explained. If I was you'd'get off the thread, because...

Spoilers are going to be all over the place now.

They might be on BBC iPlayer still! Go, lady, go! Watch!

Elquota · 05/06/2013 19:23

How about Jessica Raine from "Call the Midwife"? I always felt she was a bit aloof on the Midwife, but think she'd make a great Doctor Who.

piprabbit · 05/06/2013 19:33

I think Tilda Swinton would make an excellent doctor, or Samantha Morton. But I suspect neither would take the part.

Louise1956 · 05/06/2013 19:57

i hope they will stick to a male doctor, but I would prefer an older man next time, the recent ones have been far too young. someone you can take seriously as a wise experienced person would be nice, rather than someone who looks as if he isn't old enough to shave.
