My first AIBU - I have used advanced search and can't see an existing post on this so apologies if there is. I don't want to link to DM so please just google "Female Doctor Who" to look at the recent articles about this in the DM and newspapers.

It seems that it is a possibility and I can't understand why anyone would think this is a bad idea. AIBU?

Maybe Moffat should go ahead and write the script as usual, with a male doctor and female assistant in mind. Then a female doctor and male assistant could be cast for the roles, and it wouldn't have been written stereotypically.

mindgone · 04/06/2013 20:01

Dy DS has just commented (tongue in cheek!) that you'd have to change the title to "Nurse Who"!!! Grin

WhentheRed, that would be interesting. Just like the main character in Alien was originally written for a male actor.

KaseyM · 04/06/2013 20:12

WhentheRed, I think the reason you'll find is because one woman after a dozen men is equality gone too far!!

SamuelWestsMistress · 04/06/2013 20:30

No no no no no no no no no no no no NO.

The Doctor is a MALE. Just keep it that way.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 04/06/2013 20:40

I agree that Moffat should leave.

I think he should leave Sherlock too, now I think about it.

Vegehamwidge · 04/06/2013 20:41

Well there have already been lots of male doctors so why not a new series with a female one? If you don't like it you can watch any of the old series right?

SirChenjin · 04/06/2013 20:43

NO NO NO NO NO

The Dr is male. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Vegehamwidge · 04/06/2013 20:45

???
Is it because you are attracted to the doctor or something? Don't worry, they could always include hot male minor characters too.

edam · 04/06/2013 21:30

Elquota, you could be onto something there. I interviewed a writer recently who used to co-write with her (late) husband. She said he automatically gave all the active, adventurous, exciting stuff to the male protagonist, so she just swapped the names around half the time so the female protagonist got a fair share - and it worked just fine.

Oddly enough, this was the woman who wrote(originally illustrated) the Topsy and Tim books for very little children. Grin Sounds like Moff could take a tip from her.

SirChenjin · 04/06/2013 21:35

Does there have to be an attraction to want to Dr to remain a male character??

Mumsyblouse · 04/06/2013 21:40

There has been a Dr Who spin-off with a female lead- the Sarah Jane Adventures on CBBC, I always feel sad when I watch them now, as she died a little while ago and now there won't be any more.

garlicgrump · 04/06/2013 21:47

the main character in Alien was originally written for a male actor.

Wow, really? The ONLY female lead I have EVER found authentically independent, and she was written for a man? Bugger me.

Good thing real life ain't like the movies, isn't it.

Vegehamwidge · 04/06/2013 21:48

I'm simply trying to understand you Sir. It could be interesting, why are get so upset? It won't erase the previous dr's.

garlicgrump · 04/06/2013 21:49

Yh, Sarah Jane was brilliant. She died for the Doctor, didn't she? He's a dangerous pal.

Vegehamwidge · 04/06/2013 21:50

Sentence fail! I wonder why people are upset over the idea.

Vegehamwidge · 04/06/2013 21:55

Yes garlic it's true.

I don't know if/how much the script was rewritten later. Perhaps more script writers can manage to create interesting female characters by thinking of them as men first Confused

Louise1956 · 04/06/2013 22:01

Must everything be feminised? What's next, a female James Bond? A female Sherlock Holmes? The Doctor was created as a male character, why can't they just let him alone?

noblegiraffe · 04/06/2013 22:02

Anyone who doesn't think that the series has got samey and needs shaking up should visit this automatic Dr Who plot generator.

"A robot materialises inside the TARDIS, with a message from Apollo 11, but time is running faster than usual. Clara and the Doctor uncover the secret of the last Quig?ra?noor. Dematerialising the TARDIS at exactly the right moment saves the day. Patrick Stewart has a cameo part."

roamer2 · 04/06/2013 22:08

I think they would have to be very careful after what happened with Star Trek Voyager. I think basically alot of the male trekkers could not handle a female captain and stopped watching. So then they had to add in 7 of 9 to try to attract their attention...

Vegehamwidge · 04/06/2013 22:10

I like your ideas Louise1956! But instead of just repeating the same old characters, there could be a female Bond/Sherlock inspired character, with otherwise original plot and characters. We really don't need more new Bond and Sherlock adaptions.

Elquota · 04/06/2013 22:11

James Bond and Sherlock don't regenerate though Louise.

garlicgrump · 04/06/2013 22:11

Giraffe, I think your link has made their server crash already Grin

FreyaSnow · 04/06/2013 22:13

There is already a series with Sherlock and Watson where Watson is a woman. She's played by Lucy Liu.
